Whilst I've enjoyed Clarko's zero tolerence policies with the list and the strong internal infrastructure he is putting in place....I have felt the jury has been out on whether he can coach?

Admittedly I don't get to see all the Hawk games, but today I thought Clarko's preparation and team plan (zoning back of centre) had a real purpose that allowed us to move the ball consistantly forward systematically.... something we have failed to do previously.

His game plan truley combated Freo's style of play (their 1st 1/4 stats were a degrace 57 short kicks and 58 marks) forcing them to over possess and negatively effecting Freos game tempo.

I know this style won't work week in week out, but it was good to see Clarko proactive rather than reactive and caught Connelly and co out of soughts.

Congrats Clarko I think today you showed us your development as a coach is evolving in the right direction. What do you think?

Thought it was good work by Clarko today. Liked a lot of his moves, and is growing into the roll. I think we could expect improvement from last year, but he's still learning so there will still be some mistakes made here and there, but I think he is growing into the role. 100% support his contract to be renewed at this stage, I know its early, but I just get a good vibe around the place, and a lot has to do with the systems Clarkson has planned out.

On next week, I'd expect Clarkson to have donw his homework after last years abomination where we couldn't hit Williams inside 50. Maybe shots from 50, or even Roughead or Spider in the square will be the go.

We wont get as inept (unless we're lucky) opposition in the coaching box next week.

We won but it's still a way to go yet. Didn't, don't like the fade out tendency (witness last two rounds last year and todays game) we have. AC played it down in the press-con, I hope he wasn't quite so candid behind closed doors.

Still plenty of areas we need to improve on, both on field and in the coaching box. So long as they're prepared to keep working to improve is the main thing.

AC made some gutsy moves today

Robbie Campbell to 1st ruck against a giant!

Birchall the newby on Hazelby

Smith on Pavlich. I was sure Croad would get that gig.

Dawson on McPharlin. Wow, thats faith.

Good stuff. The guys moved the ball to what seemed a plan. The kicks to Williams running to about the 40m mark in the pocket area, beautiful to watch.

Wasn't happy with the "Let them run it out of defence and hopefully we can run it back in" game plan - the first time (2nd Quarter) we showed some pressure on their backmen, we got a goal. With Willo and Roughy down there we should be able to force a few spillages.

The last quarter "lie down" didn't please me either - it'd be good for the boys to absolutely smash opposition. We should've hurt 'em.

On the up side, as Jeff said, "at least we don't chip sideways anymore" - there were moments in the 3rd qtr when I had to remind myself that it was Hawthorn I was watching - confidence, first options, hitting targets - I was over the moon.

One last thing - when the boys went to sing the song, they waited for the "Cockroach" to join in - good signs.

Agree, that really ***** me.

We should have won that by 12-15 goals!

No matter what one might think of it, it was in Hawthorn's interests and Clarko's interests last year to get five wins or less.

This year it's in Hawthorn's interests and Clarko's interests to win a few games and develop the game plan and structures very positively.

I could be wrong, but I strongly suspect that Clarkson is the real deal. The guy has turned around the club's list as impressively as anyone has ever turned a list around. He promised last year that Hawthorn would not be seen as soft, and he achieved it as immediately as was possible. This year, he's been talking about building a winning culture.

I didn't mind Clarkson's tactics against Freo. While some may frown and critisise that it creates bordom to our game. I certainly see it as more skill then the rubbish we produced last season with all that kicking behind crap.

Sydney won a flag from a similar tactic. So who knows!?

liked the way we played, took a while to adapt but once we did we were on fire, as shown in the third term.

however, i no doubt feel that clarko would be very disappointed to only win by 22 in the end, we were up by some 10 goals. we must learn from this to become the best.

how good was clarkson's reaction on tv when he got in the circle, he was pumped as were all the boys and the club, great to see.

Willo was leaning on the goal post in the last quarter
the runner should of been sent out straight away to Willo.
Chase your player or get off!
It wasnt good enough and players who wernt doing team things should of copped a spray when it was happening, not after the game.

The role of a coach is to lead a club, it isn't the coaches problem if his team loses, its the player's, the coach doesn't play, but takes the blame, and also the glory.

A coach is a motivator
Responsible for hiring the fitness team, has the last call on draft day, organises the list, and employs people to implement strategies, and creates disciplines for the club.

Much more than just motivation.
