Rival knew that had him and so did hawks when got wind of it.
Loser was prepared to renege when tried to use it as a bargaining chip.
Obviously didn't work.
So Clarkson had a deal wrapped up with another club (presumably Collingwood with all the chatter at the start of this) which he took to Hawthorn to negotiate whatever conditions they had denied before? An extension, I suppose as that has been intimated a number of times. But the other club pulled out of the deal when Hawthorn got wind and confronted everyone? And then the board said no more extensions, we'll go with Sam but keep this guy for a year? The guy who has just been caught red-handed in a double dealing silent auction?
I reckon there are snippets of truth in there but for the whole thing to be true it doesn't make sense. Why would the club want to keep someone around who was just double-dealing? And how could they possibly think it would work? And what could he ask for after extorting his way to a new contract aside from complete control over the club? Sounds like a very one-sided view to me.
