I know it was mentioned earlier in the thread. But just watched the 2011 Elimination Final against Essendon. Very, very enjoyable belting. Man, we had some pace on our list back then. 3 amigos (Betts, Garlett, Yarran), Walker, Murphy, Judd, Russell, Armfield, Joseph, Lucas. Plus some pretty nimble talls in Jamison, Waite and Setanta.

And I'd forgotten about Essendon's diabolically irritating small forwards of More-frees, Alwyn Davey, Reimers and Leroy Jetta.

Carlton v Geelong Round 12, 1995. Foxtel this afternoon. Observations:
  • Geelong were an extremely talented team
  • Ablett - GOAT
  • Umpire Goldspink loved to antagonise wherever possible. Seemed to thrive on crowd/player reactions when not paying obvious frees. Gave way too many lectures to players
  • Ratten- tough. Gun
  • Fraser Brown - tough. Gun
  • Bradley - jet
  • Harry madden - underrated. Brilliant ruckman
  • Peter Dean - tough. Uncompromising
  • Diesel - amazing footy smarts and skills (both sides)
  • Sticks - great mark. Jekyll & Hyde kicking.
Mil Hanna - lacked footy smarts

With the cost cutting how many umpires will there be. ? Make them a kick behind play I reckon and pay the obvious . Too many rules and tiggy touch woods. Can’t wait to see The Navy Blues run out .

NRL trying to reduce down 1 umpire but they are challenging via unions.

AFL can’t reduce imo, the pitch is just too large and too many players.

Fact 1: Umpires continually criticised even a generation later
Fact 2: Best team wins premiership
Fact 3: Umpires must improve so that..........oh wait...........
I don’t have an issue with umpires in general Thy. Just those that love the limelight like Razor Ray (early days) and Goldspink. His lecturing of players were infuriating to the the point I was “losing it!!!” Every time he did it.
You don’t notice the good umpires..

Just on Whitehead a rippling young player who could have been a top line player, apparently he hurt his foot pretty badly in 96/97 and was given ongoing injections by the medicos in his foot to keep playing which caused ruptured tendons nerve damage and bone fragments that ultimately ended a very promising career, a real shame..

One more observation if I may: what a pleasure to see football played at a packed suburban ground. Atmosphere not reproduceable.
