I didn't think clubs could delist players after 1 year.
They can if they pay out their contracts.

Essendon cut Austin Lucy after one year. ;)

If we didn't pick them when he had the chance to, I hope we stear clear of them in the draft.

Get another Joey Anderson. :thumbsu: :)

Collard to the Eagles? :p :D

If these young players can't accept the gift they've been given of playing AFL then good on Freo for axing them in my opinion. There are young guns out there who would kill to make the big league, and yet some still take it for granted. I hate this I'm Bigger Than The World mentality.

Yeah, I thought they changed the rule after this one. Clearly I was wrong.

Stop looking at other clubs rejects ..because that is what they are .... better off looking overseas and finding a marty clarke... haddrill you are kidding may as well get stephen OReilly back and he was shite....

Enough players from other clubs draft and develop some players ...... collard is poison .....

Would like to get him to the club, but having said that, we would need to be very wary, and at the end of the day I don't think the club would take the risk.

We are slowly but surely weeding out the guys that don't have the commitment to become an AFL player.

Collard is just another example of this, so unless we are absolutely certain that he can, and will, change his ways, I would steer well clear.

Obviously Collard may have some attitude or behavioral issues.
Hopefully the kid can be mentored and encouraged in the right direction, has some serious talent.
I would look at him at with ND pick 36.
Huge potential, good pace, skillful and with the grunt we need.
Ciao

Pass ! Do you think he'd adjust to being in another state, couldn't get his head around the requirements to play at the top level.
Fact: him and Jetta did not want to leave WA, Collard had the luxury of staying in Perth and blew it.
Massive mistake if the Blues select him

Just a few quotes i found on Collard from last year. He must really have something wrong with him to be de-listed after the first year and have raps on him like that. I really think we need to take a punt on him whether it is PSD or ND

YahooAFL:

Collard was one of the most exciting juniors in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft and was surprisingly still available when the Dockers had their first selection at No.31. Originally from South Fremantle, Collard represented his state at junior level in 2004 (under-16s), as well as 2005-06 (under-18). Unlike most 2006 draftees, Collard played senior football in his state last season and booted 15 goals in his nine senior WAFL games including a bag of five on debut in Round 6. As a junior he performed best as a floating half-forward who won the ball through the midfield and pushed forward to be a scoreboard threat.

Weavers 2006 phantom draft

17. Clayton Collard (Carlton). Collard is better but less credentialed than the higher-profile Jetta. Has a hint of Gary Ablett jnr about him. Collard might develop into a midfielder in time and alongside Betts gives the Blues some flair and genuine game-breaking pace and talent across half-forward.

Pykie

Collard is a freak, i personally rate him on equal terms with Selwood, but it seems he might slip, which is astonishing, as it would be rediculous if a team that finished in the top 4 gets to add this guy to their team, especially west coast.

Mel Brown has been reported as saying he thinks by the end of his career, Collard will be the greatest ever Western Australian footballer in history, ahead of Maurice Riolo, thats how much talent he thinks he has.

Is fairly quick, good height, may need to put on a bit of size, extremely good disposal, excellent decision making, probably the best in the draft. Has the Dal Santo "poise", has the flair of the aboriginal players, and gets plenty of touches. When he gets it, he does special things, ala Judd, Wells etc, your expecting something to happen, which is a rare gift.

Is daylight ahead of Jetta in my opinion, but others dont agree, can play forward, and loves to drift forward in the midfield and kick a goal.

If i had a pick anywhere in the 8-16 range and he was still available, and you wanted a midfielder, i would gobble it up, if he slips past that, and say Carlton gets him, then you have a massive bargain. gibbs, murphy and collard would be the equivelant of Judd, Kerr and Cousins in 3-4 years.

Interesting to watch this pan out.
Mourish too was an interesting case last year if I have the right kid.

He was from Geraldton and was heavily tipped to go to Essendon.

There was alot of collusion mentioned with the Bombers, he apparently hadn't done the East Freo thing, which is the normal pathway for Geraldton kids usually, didnt play hardly any rep stuff and there were plenty of stories re him being everything from lazy and unfit, to being a heavy smoker floated about.

His Beep Test at the WA testing was absolutely disgusting (9ish) and there was much discussion of sandbagging by the Bombers.

Was touted to be a smokey and even the Bombers first round pick, but slipped to Freo and now delisted 12 months on.

Absolutely worth a punt. There's no-where near enough in this draft not to consider Collard. I'd say definitely with pick 46, and almost definitely with pick 36.

Players don't lose their ability in 12 months if they haven't suffered injuries. Attitude seems to be the factor here, and attitudes can be fixed.

if he any thing like Jetta i dont want him, we need players committed to the cause, players who will play 150+ games for the blues, nothing else.. their is a reason why the dockers have de listed hiom so early into his career and im sure its based on commitments and i really hope we dont go this way

Was shocked to here he was delisted - he was very highly rated last year. I wouldn't be against taking a punt on him - but we've got to be wary about it. Hopefully this delisting serves as a wakeup call to him if his attitude is really that poor. As far as talent goes, seems to good to pass up if we have a chance to get him with 46 or PSD/rookie.

Worth a look, but I wouldn't be wasting pick 36 or 46 on him, if there is some kid with the right attitude, but perhaps not as talented.

Remember Angwin.
Attitudes can be harder to turn around than people think.

Bit unfair to be comparing the kid to Angwin. The fact is we don't really know much about what went on behind the scenes.

Angwin had deep issues...

Fair enough.

Wasn't so much comparing the actual off field issues of which I know nothing.

More a comment on a highly rated kid, delisted or moved on after a very short period of time.......to a new club that wrongly thought it could turn him around.

Once bitten. Twice shy.

He's worth a go. What's the worst it could do? I've thought for a while that we've needed that extra small forward to keep the ball inside the forward 50 - Betts is awesome, but can't do it on his own.

The worst it could do?

Waste a pick, and derail a good young player.

Angwin took Norman down with him.

Not saying Collard is this bad, but the point has been made. If he went off the rails at home, what will he be like away from his support network?
Do we risk him disturbing a solid group?
If he was so talented why delist him after 1 year? What could be so bad that the club would rather pay him out than try and turn him around?

Pass.

Hasn't it been said that his delisting was more about his attitude towards his footy?

Perhaps Collard didn't fit into Mark Harvey's long term plans...

We don't know any reason as to why he was delisted, it's all speculation - so before we jump the gun, let's just see what comes out of it first.

The club has finally turned around and now you want to go backwards? To be delisted with only 1 year on the list shows what sort of attitude the kids got. We've already got 1 basketcase and quite frankly, that's enough. We don't need any more disharmony amongst the ranks.

I think that the Carlton Football Club need to have a chat with Clayton and see were he is at, this wouldn't hurt anyone and the club can decide whether this guys head is in the right place. If it is, i would be more than happy to give up either pick 36 or 46 for him. He is very talented, we have to explore every option to get him at the club, he would be a great asset to us. Remember he is only eighteen, he could be very much changeable.

I don't know about you, but drafting a young player with potential would not be going backwards.

WE DON'T KNOW WHY HE'S BEEN DELISTED

Stop basing your judgements on the fact that he's only been on their list for a year. There could be several reasons.

Exactly. Well said.
