We should've had nuclear power plants ages ago, but politicians are too afraid to put this country first if it means losing a few votes.
Yep. The problem is the long construction times. Globally they're running at ~25 years. If we had started many years ago (latest gen reactors too, not 3rd/4th gen 70 style reactors) we could be a green production/smelting powerhouse.

Even the large coal stations take a long time to build.
If we go down the "only build renewable energy " path, we could easily find ourselves without enough storage to get through still nights.

People saying "just use batteries " are being very simplistic and generally don't understand the scales and costs involved.
If we wait until it "hits the fan" we are then looking down the barrel of a decades of energy shortages.

EV Facts: A Tesla Needs 85kw of power to fully charge. Avg household solar is 6.6kw & produces 22kw a day. A Tesla battery holds 13kw max & costs $18k. If you fully charge your EV overnight and have a battery more than 80% will still come from coal. Sounds Green doesn’t it

Its feasible to run a daily commute ( 40km both ways or thereabouts ) on solar.
You'd probably need a much bigger solar array on your roof ( like double ) , and a "special" powerwall that only charges your Car.

They have developed a special powerwall for California.
There are regular blackouts in California.
If you build Solar or Wind , you get subsidised , and will probably sell every kw you can produce.
As a businessperson, you don't care if there is no power on a still night.

If you build a gas power station , you get demonised, you won't sell your power if there is renewable power available, so you are left picking up the scraps. Essentially its hard to make a return on your capital costs and others are actively trying to minimise the purchase of power from you.
Hence not many investing in this option.

So with blackouts ,Tesla made a Powerwall to help charge the car if there is surplus energy available over and above that needed to get your house through to the morning. As soon as grid energy is available the Powerwall switches back to the grid.

Electric cars may turn out to be a great option, but FIRST we need to fix the ENERGY GRID.

A Tesla uses 18 kwh/100km of energy.
Not allowing for transmission losses , or transformer losses , or charging inefficiencies. Victoria's official grid CO2 equates it to a petrol car with 8L/100km.
So slightly better than a bog standard Camry. ( 7L/100km ).
