Roast Clint Bartram - Uber-Dud Watch

Says a lot about the strength of our list if he is playing his 100th already. Would be plodding through the thick muddy fields of VFL matches if he was playing for any team other than ours :/
Disagree, he was a gun in 2006 when we weren't shit. At the moment his errors are particularly amplified because of how little star quality we have and how often the ball enters the D50. Put him in a decent side like Collingwood as a role player and watch him flourish in such an environment.

If anything, at least players with greater potential can look to Bartram as an example of how they should be training. He's good for club culture I believe.

Bingo. It is easy to forget Clint is in the leadership group. He has been made an example for players with unrealised talent or those that hear footsteps, of which we have too many..

May your powers go to work Biff..

Put Clint Bartram's effort and determination into some of our 'supposed' more skilled players and we would have some sort of side. Brett Kirk comes to mind what a player can do with limited ability but sheer determination. I'm not in anyway placing Bartram in Kirk's category, but he's in our leadership group ahead of Green, Moloney, Sylvia, Jurrah, Davey, Rivers, Watts, JMac, Martin, Bate, Dunn.

Says a lot for his character that a new coach can come in and determine him a better leader than a lot more high profile players on our list. Regardless of his limited skillset, we need more players like Bartram at our club. And shame on you for anyone who is questioning his spot in our team.

Green, (not a leader's ***hole)
Moloney, (piss head)
Sylvia, (piss head)
Jurrah, (I don't need to say it)
Davey, (not a leader's ***hole)
Rivers, (obviously not a leader)
Watts, (Bambi)
JMac, (dud)
Martin, (dud)
Bate, (dud)
Dunn. (dud)

Is it any wonder he is in our leadership group?

At the moment his errors are particularly amplified

What baffles me about this thread is the continued idea, clearly well-ingrained in many posters' minds, that Bartram absolutely butchers the ball 5 to 10 times per game. Now I know he isn't an amazing kick, but I for one certainly haven't noticed nearly as many skill errors from him this year as some of our other defenders. Obviously Joel Mac is the prime culprit (shudder) by both hand and foot, but I reckon all of Grimes, Rivers and Garland, and Tom McDonald as well, have had just as many clangers. Indeed I reckon the long-kicking game plan is a good thing for Clint's game, because he doesn't have to try to hit precise targets through a zone... he can just bomb it long down the line (effectiveness of that plan aside), and he does it well enough.

Should he be in our best 22? Maybe not, but if not it won't only be because of a perceived lack of skill with football in hand. The real issue here is that in the last few weeks he's been demolished by Nahas and Dalhaus... and is supposedly our best small defender.

That part does worry me. I have always felt he would be a better tagger in the middle of the ground. He doesn't quite have the foot speed to go with the small forwards. Milne will have a field day on us as well if this trend continues this week. This is why we need Strauss fit and Bennell to show us something. Both have the speed to go with small defenders which would free up Bartram to do a role on an opposition midfielder.

And that's exactly my point and what makes it so frustrating being an MFC supporter right now. The guys listed should be good leaders. If any of them had the determination of Bartram or Jones then we would be a much better team. It disgusts me that Colin Sylvia has never been in our leadership group. Clearly our best player when it comes to skill and presence on the field, but has never looked like being interested in becoming a leader.
