Horrible news but the real shame is the bashing of poor Ron Barrasi! me and my mates were on Fitzroy st NYE and saw Barass having a bite to eat about 11:30 and being trashed we stopped to say hello to him and just talked shit for a few minutes, he was the nicest fella and happily spoke to us, if only wed been an hour later that punk who assaulted him wouldnt be standing now ill tell you that much!

An what is he 72 yo, and they kicked him when he was down. Weak pricks, what sort of people can do that. I was pretty wild and feral when young, but my mates and I would always help someone being picked on or in need. Tough bugger said he'd do it again too, good on him.

The footage of Barassi is revealing.. there is no way Barassi was thrown to the ground as the papers say.. Barass absolutely crushed the guy.. tackled him from behind at top speed and put him into the concrete face first with his full weight on top of him.. that's when the guys mates started kicking into him.. gotta say he moved fast for a 72 year old.. you weren't getting up from that tackle in a hurry

Been a nasty New Year.. my mate lived in that house in Chirnside park that caught fire and one of his best mates died.. he got the poor guys 4 and 6 year old daughters out but they had to stand on the lawn listening to him screaming inside the house.. he was the only one downstairs in a den adjoining the garage, everyone else was upstairs and got out pretty easily.. my mate kept saying over and over.. "I just couldn't get to him"

The story is from Geoff Walsh's mouth that a bottle was thrown onto Cloke's balcony.

He proceeded to ask the offenders to settle down, and when he turned his back the set upon him.

Yet the 9 news report it as a pub brawl :D

Why do you give a football club official's version more credibility than TV news ? Football clubs trade in spin. Football club officials present the club line. They are the least reliable source of facts. When it comes to a choice between a news program's version of an event involving a player and the club's, the news program's is likely to be more accurate.

You're under the impression that what Channel 9 shows is actually 'news'. I'm surprised they didn't stage a re-enactment a-la "A Current Affair".

That's horrible. Your mate is going to need some counselling, and he'll never get over it. But at least he saved the children.

Bad luck for Trav.

Being the sunshine coast chances are the culpritts had never even heard of Travis Cloke, so just one of those unlucky alcohol fuelled situations.

Lets hope he has a speedy recovery.

dammit now he is driving down from the sunshine coast:thumbsd:

They're just being cautious.

I understand that the initial scan at the hospital on the night did not show any fracture but there is a lot of swelling so the scan may not be accurate. They plan to re-scan him when he is down here and the swelling goes down, which should only be a day or two.

If it is fractured it would most likely only be a minor fracture.

Article from Today's HS:

MAGPIE Travis Cloke is driving home to Melbourne after being hurt in a New Year's Eve attack on the Sunshine Coast. Cloke, 21, was advised not to fly as a precaution after suffering facial injuries when set upon by a group of revellers in Maroochydore.

Cloke is being driven almost 1800km by his father, David, and is expected back in Melbourne tonight.

David Cloke said his son had suffered swelling and bruising around the nose and face, but he could not confirm if there was any structural damage until Collingwood's medical staff examined him.

"He is doing a lot better," David Cloke said.

"He has got bruising around the nose and face and quite a bit of swelling.

"He couldn't fly back because there maybe is a suspicion that there could be some problem and because of the air pressure.

"It's a precautionary thing. We're pretty confident that everything will be all right."

Sunshine Coast police yesterday interviewed people over the incident.

"We have said to the police that we want charges laid, and they have the names of people," David Cloke said.

"We'll see what unfolds down the line."

He said his son, Magpie best and fairest in 2007, had been shaken up by the incident.

"He was taken by surprise," he said.

"There were some guys causing trouble and he and two mates just went up and said, 'Look, just cut it out'.

"Initially one of them was polite about the whole thing and really nice, and then all of a sudden, without notice, they (Cloke and friends) got jumped and a number of them got stuck into them."

Collingwood players return to the club after their Christmas break on Monday, but it is unclear if Cloke will resume normal training immediately.

"He will see a doctor first and they might say you are better off for a couple more days doing some limited stuff to make sure everything settles down properly," David Cloke said.

"In the short term, missing a couple of days is going to make it better for the longer term when he gets back into full stuff."

Sunshine Coast police Supt Ben Hanbidge said a group of party-goers was being interviewed over the incident at Maroochydore's Sebel Resort.

"We have received a complaint from Mr Cloke and his allegations or his complaint is subject to an investigation by Sunshine Coast detectives," he said.

Not sure if that is bad news about the Swelling or not.

Glad these morons will get charged and Hopefully go to jail for some time.

Of all the free to air channels, Nine is by far the least credible. But even Nine is more reliable than an AFL Football Club official.

You choose whom you want to believe, that's your choice, and there is nothing wrong with that, and I have nothing against it. But I would rather put my faith in a football club, especially one I support on a football matter, than a skanky media outlet that pays people like Roberta Williams thousands of dollars for skanky interviews and headlines part of their news coverage with a Paris Hilton shopping spree.

That's ****ed up, right there. :( It would take an unbelievably strong person to prevent their life from being ruined by something like that. I wish him all the best, FWIW.

Sorry Mitch but only age will give you wisdom.
Wait until the media have got it completely wrong a couple of thousand more times in your lifetime and you won't even believe you asked that question.

PS...get a club.

Turn it up! Don't know if you are old enough to remember the Paxtons or to have experienced years of sensationalism but a-la Pie Eyed's comments you will find out how dodgy the tabloid outfits are.

I suspect you really mean only the one you support.

By their nature, news outlets produce stories that appeal to the lowest common denominator, which is why Nine has far greater market share than Two and the Herald Sun than the Financial Review. Roberta Williams stories sell.

Media outlets get the basic facts right, though, if they don't they get sued. It's the angle they use that casts doubt on the stories. Football clubs, on the other hand, can, and do, regularly, say what they please when they put out a story. As long as they don't blackguard an individual, they don't get sued.

Press outlets are more credible than football clubs.

Oh ok you suspect do ya, without having the information to draw a conclusion about me and my personality.

Seems like you may be on your way to a successful media career.

Have you thought about handing your resume into channel 9.
