Looking for stories of encounters with wild animals..

What's the closest you've come to being a deadly animal's meal of the day?

Ever seen a shark swim under your surfboard? Walked waist deep in crocodile infested waters and only realised later? Ever stood face to face with a grizzly bear?

On the flip side, also looking for happy stories.. Have you ever come across a wild brumby and felt something inside you awaken as you both stood gazing at each other in a field? Ever spotted a rare animal and no one has believed you? Or have you ever rescued and nursed back to health a a bird with a broken wing?

Myself? I once narrowly missed standing on a tiger snake when I was stomping through the bush. As a young 'un I'm not so sure I would have made it had I been bitten (nearest hospital was very far away).

Picked my cat up out of a fight once.....he didn't appreciate it.

Still have a hole in the top of my hand where he sunk in and hit bone

Was 3 playing on the front porch.. Brown snake was coming for me down the drive way.. our 3 legged cat attacked it and saved me, dad came out and killed it with an axe.

Bit harsh on the cat after he'd just saved you.

Three legged cats can still lead fulfilling lives.

I was playing Golf once and saw a pack of kangaroo's in the distance so, as you do, I pretended to air box them like the tough guy i am. Unfortunately for me I was dealing with the most badass Kangaroo in the state, the big Alpha **** go onto it's legs and let out this epic growl. I've never ran so fast in my life.

Plus, cat is a legend

Nearly got attacked by a wild elephant that was crossing a river with its baby. Was in a hollowed out tree ("canoe") floating down the river and we got a bit too close. A month prior about 3 wild elephants had ran wild through the town and killed 6 or so people.

Scary but amazing at the same time.

Saw a shark once. Would have killed me if it wasn't for the glass tank in its way.

When I was 5 I had a red bellied black snake slither through my legs while at a local park.

Did the cat lose it's leg in a previous encounter with a snake ?
If so it's one arse kicking cat

I've been surfing down the south-west (at Three Bears for those who know it), and had a dozen dolphins share a wave with me, half on my left, half on my right. That was pretty cool.

Did you ever meet or hear about others meeting a particular large white shark that likes to scare surfers by bobbing up next to them, looking eye to eye, then leaving? Legend has he hit a surfer one day, spat him out when he realized the surfer wasn't a seal (as happens in 90% of white shark strikes) and has since learnt to differentiate between them.

I Have had numerous drug and alcohol fueled discussion with surfers who have seen him. Some say he's saying sorry, others "I've got your back", some even say he's aware he's scaring the shit out the surfers and enjoys it.

- Nearly stood on a tiger snake running. Twice. I don't run that path anymore.
- Ridden over a brown snake, I hit it 4 times with my two wheels. I squealed like a baby. The guy who was riding in front (and missed the snake by 1 foot) wondered what was going on. The two people behind pissed themselves laughing.
- Paddling out to a surf break and my mate was waving furiously at me. He's noticed 2 reef sharks caught inside a deep spot in the reef (probably only 1.5m each) and I was paddling straight for them, about 20m away.
- On the positive side, surfed with dolphins (more times than I can count), turtles and even whales.

A few worth mentioning:

- I do a bit of hiking in remote areas, so have seen plenty of snakes. Dodgiest encounter was climbing the Cobberas in NE Victoria - off track, climbing up a ~4m rock face and popped my head up to see a curled up tiger snake about 20cm from my face. It got more of a fright than me and jumped up into the air (totally airborne), spun around, hit the ground then took off. How I didn't let go and fall I'll never know. Almost stepped on plenty of others (tigers, copperheads, red/yellow bellied blacksnakes, browns), but still love seeing them.

- Drove into Yellowstone N.P. the first day the road from the south opened in spring along a snow ploughed road with ~6ft of snow left on each side.. All of the bison had been attracted to the few scraps of grass that had been exposed. I spent about 20 minutes stopped in my car totally surrounded by a herd of bison on the road, walking right past and around my car (I could have reached out the window and touched them). Cute babies, but geez, the big males are just huge and intimidating (1.5 to 2 tonnes).

- I've picked off/flicked clear 4-5 red back spiders from my arms or legs when I felt something crawling on me doing work on farms growing up.

- Had a whole sandwich snatched out of my hand by an emu reaching its head over my shoulder at Tower Hill near Warrnambool. Scared the crap out of me.

I think the bolded part may go some way to explaining this.

Was running out to the wheelie bin to drop something in it, (was in a rush hence running) and came around the corner to a little brown snake coming out. Momentum prevented me stopping, so I had to do what is widely regarded as the dumbest thing you can do and jumped over it. /endcoolstorybro

When I was a child, the neighbours had this vile and vicious dog chained to a barrel. There was no fence between my neighbours and our yard, so when I played cricket with family and friends, inevitably we used to hit the ball far too close to this despicable creature. This was a dog that should have been put down, it would maul anyone who got within its vicinity. If we ran out of tennis balls, used to put my life in my own hands and try and gather the balls that were on the periphery of his radius. One time, this dog got a small chunk of the skin off my right arm.

Wish we had complained to the council about this uncontrolled dog, caused me to develop a fear of dogs which took a long time to overcome.

You needed a 3 legged cat to go in to bat for you I reckon
