I get that the distribution is a one sided event too, but using your analogy, it's akin to the complainant handing the gun to the perpetrator. Now, there absolutely is risk in sharing nude images with people, and it’s not advisable to do so with a person unless it’s someone that you have developed trust in.

However, the fact that people feel the need to point this out in instances like this, instead of placing the blame squarely where it belongs, which is on the person who made a conscious choice to share the image without consent, leads to a culture of victim blaming. This is precisely why the rates of sexual assault and harassment is so high.

Stop blaming women for wearing something revealing, getting drunk, walking through a dodgy area etc. and start blaming men for thinking it’s okay to take advantage of vulnerable women and maybe we might see some change.

A deliberate act of intimacy with a partner has a reasonable expectation that the intimacy remains within the relationship. She sent it to 1 person. If she wanted others to see she would have distributed it to others.

It might be stupid to send a bloke a nude, because as blokes we know that the risk of being passed on is high. However, the person who sends it on is violating her trust and it's his fault. There is no responsibility on her that someone else passed it on. That is victim blaming.

However, if a girl sends a nude, to send it on without her consent or knowledge is a gub act and defending it is defending the indefensible and that is why it is codified into law to protect the naive.

The only reason gender is relevant to this discussion is because the reality is that women are far more likely to be the victims of sexual abuse/harassment than men. The idea that my decision as a man to try and highlight this issue means I am mysogynistic is absurd.

There is a distinct difference between vulnerability and responsibility. If a person shares a naked picture with someone they have put themselves in a vulnerable position. However, the responsibility for sharing the image is 100% on the person who chooses to share it. I agree with you that I don’t think it’s a good idea to share images unless you’ve got clear reason to trust that person, but it’s still not your fault if it gets shared around. Just as it’s not your fault if you walk down a dark alley at night and get assaulted.
