RESULTS

We have Carlton and Essendon way out in front
Kangaroos Richmond Geelong and Collingwood in the next group.
Melbourne St Kilda and Bulldogs in the next group
Sydney Brisbane Hawthorn West Coast Adelaide in the next group
Port and Freo a distant last - but they do have an excuse in not being around for so long yet

Carl 114 4.56
Ess 115 4.60
Kang 139 5.56
Rich 153 6.12
Geel 173 6.92

The 25 replys were collated and points added up 1= most relevant and 15= least relevant

Own team rated 8 so as not to contaminate the sample.

There were 20 replies from victorian supporters /clubs so results skewed that way

Club of respondent:
Kangaroos 5
Hawthorn 4
Richmond 4
Coll'wood 3
Essendon 2
Adelaide 2
Sydney 2
WCE Freo Bris 1 each

So Dan 24 has got up noses with his claim that some clubs are more relevant than others

I'd like to conduct a survey. Please reply and state 1) Your Club and

2) The remaining 15 clubs in the order that you like to see them playing your club.
Put another way the top club is the game you are most likely not to miss if they are playing your club. The Bottom one is the one you would most likely miss out on when they play your team. Try to amke it correspond to your attendance habits over the last few years, or whether you like to see them play, or whether you think you are most likely to get a win or whatever.

Here's my example (but please don't let influence your selection order)- that would introduce a survey bias

St Kilda
Kangaroos
Geelong
Melbourne
Essendon
Collingwood
Richmond
Carlton
Bulldogs
Port Adelaide
Sydney
Brisbane
Adelaide
West Coast
Fremantle

Please note this would be for a home game at your favourite ground. No need to introduce venues as a variable

Carlton
Adelaide
Essendon
WCE
North Melbourne
Brisbane
Melbourne
Saint Kilda
Richmond

I have a feeling that Port and Freo are gonna bring up last places in a few of these responses...

Geelong
StKilda

Mantis

Richmond

Order of interest of games against Richmond for me:

Carlton (ancient enemy)
Collingwood (ancient enemy)
Port (personally despise)
Geelong
Brisbane
Melbourne
Essendon (only because of the Missus)
Kangaroos

The remainder are all about the same for me:

St Kilda
Sydney
Adelaide
Hawthorn
Bulldogs
West Coast
Fremantle

I don't consider any of these clubs less relevant.

I should also point out that I enjoy going to non-Richmond games as well, and the order would be very different.

Geelong, Brisbane, Melbourne and Brisbane would be highest for me among non-Richmond games.

Adelaide

Order of interest
Port (Hate)
Bulldogs
North
Geelong
Collingwood
St Kilda
Carlton
Essendon
Sydney
Richmond
Hawthorn
West Coast
Brisbane
Freo
Melbourne

Its a bit tough after the 1st 3 though.
The truth is I'm most interested in whoever we are playing next.

Pess... at first I thought "holy ***** not you too" but this is actually looking fairly interesting...

Western Bulldogs (always a good game)
Hawthorn (long time rival, from the 70s)
Richmond (danny says we are too old)
Essendon (always a good game except last time)
St Kilda (brother in-law)
Geelong (use to always give us trouble)
Brisbane (the fitzroy thing - Noel Gordon)
Sydney (not that we get to see it live)
Collingwood (best mate barracks for them)
Melbourne
West Coast
Carlton
Fremantle
Adelaide
Port Adelaide

This does not mean that I think any of these team are less important... It just means I like watching certain teams...

Club: Brisbane Lions

In order of interest
1. Collingwood (Fitzroy's ancient arch-rival and many of my good friends barrack for them)
2. Richmond (see above)
3. North Melbourne (rivalry increasing)
4. Western Bulldogs (good rivalry in the past, although fading slightly)
5. Hawthorn (in-laws barrack for them)
6. Sydney Swans
7. Carlton
8. St Kilda
9. Melbourne
10. Essendon
11. Adelaide
12. Fremantle (off the bottom because Anzac Day Fixture with Brisbane is becoming a bit of a tradition - also because of the send-off they gave Fitzroy.. I take a bit of an interest in them)

Little interest in watching.
13. Port Adelaide (Primus & Paxman only)
14. Geelong
15. West Coast

Apologies for the word 'Relevance' just said it to beat-up a bit of interest.

As we can see from reponses so far all clubs are relevant to someone - I'm particularly interested in the diffference between I/S and VIC teams.

If I get enough responses I promise I will try to collate the results

I must be pretty dumb, but I can't really put the teams in any order. I just love going to watch the Crows play ANY ONE. But I guess some games are more interesting because I know more of the players, eg. I know more Essendon players than I would, say, Freo players. But I would never choose not to go to a game because I didn't like (or rate) the opposition team.

1. North Melbourne (duh!)

2. Having thought about it, I changed the order a few times, but finally came up with this:

Geelong (gloating rights over best friend)
Collingwood (love beating them)
Richmond (see above)
Carlton (see above)
Footscray (always a top game)
Brisbane (plenty of reason for bitterness from both clubs)
Sydney (seems to be an edge to the rivalry)
Essendon (the benchmark club, but I've never hated them like I hate Collingwood et al)
Adelaide (always entertaining games)
Hawthorn
St. Kilda
Melbourne
West Coast
Fremantle
Port Adelaide

Crow54,

You might not have many preference due to Crows not being around so long. But don't tell me that beating the Power isn't better than beating any other club.

It all depends on how clubs are travelling at the time. In 1992, North would have been in the bottom 3 in terms of "wanting to see your club play agaisnt them", but now they'd be right up there. Right now, it would be :

1. Carlton
2. Collingwood
3. Richmond
4. Geelong
5. Roos
6. West Coast
7. Adelaide
8. Hawthorn
9. Melbourne
10. Sydney
11. St.Kilda
12. Bulldogs
13. Brisbane
14. Port
15. Freo

At first thought, I was going to put Brisbane, West Coast and Fremantle as the clubs I was least likely to go to see, for the simple reason that I wouldn't go to Queensland or Western Australia if you paid me. This, of course, would have ruled out any away matches against these clubs.

BUT, as Pessimistic has clarified, we are talking about home games.

So, really, if we're only talking about home games I can say without hesitation that I rate all 15 non-Collingwood clubs (which I tend to see as just ONE club anyway) equally. I simply don't miss Collingwood matches in Melbourne. I've also been known to travel to Sydney and Adelaide for away matches.

Apart from Collingwood, the only other club that I've got any time for is Port Adelaide. I sometimes go to watch them play in Melbourne against other clubs. When I lived in S.A. the Port Adelaide Magpies were my club of choice in the S.A.N.F.L.

Of course, Port Power is a separate club, but culturally (don't laugh you bastards, I'm serious) I can still identify with their supporters. Basically, I like feral barrackers ... and Port barrackers are right up there with the best (or is that the worst?) But when they play us I hate their guts ... totally.

Of the other clubs, perhaps I see Richmond as fairly "relevant". Put it this way, I'd hate to see Richmond go to the wall, because football wouldn't be the same without them. They are certainly a club with character and charisma. I just hate hearing that "yellow and black" line when they beat us.

The rest of the clubs are a complete waste of space, and I'd be quite happy to see any of them fold. I fact I'd do anything in my power to help make them fold. But I still turn up to see them play Collingwood because ... well ... because Collingwood are playing ... obviously.

My team: Freo
Order would probably be:
West Coast (love beating them, last year rd 20 awesome)
Port (just like them)
Brisbane (ditto)
Essendon (love to knock them off)
Melbourne (good young side like freo)
Collingwood (hate them and love to watch them lose)
Sydney (good tough team)
Carlton (hate them with a passion, like to see them lose)
North (ditto above)
Hawthorn
Richmond
Western Bulldogs
Geelong
Adelaide
St Kilda

1) Collingwood

2) Carlton (old rival, sweet knocking them off)
Essendon (old rival, good side, so would be good to beat)
Brisbane (live up here so it'd be good to beat ther mat the gabba.
North (old rivalry, good to beat)
Richmond (old enemy)
Adelaide (don't like them)
Melbourne (don't mind them but still good to beat)
The rest of them follow in no particular order.

Just passing by again but couldn't leave this one - Jeez, I'll have to register if you keep up this humour Alf.

Your words "The rest of the clubs are a complete waste of space and I would be happy to see them fold...I'd do anything in my power to see them fold."

Please do - lol - and then you will have your own league with Port Power, Richmond and Collingwood and you can play each other to death all year, but you know what, you would still get the wooden spoon.

You could all then punch s**t out of each other, trade players each week to gain some interest and start to recruit at your local drinking hole for some players, because the real ones would all have been drafted, if any good, by the real competition. You know those teams you would love to see fold.

Yes, many of us would all like the outer back, the true grass roots, loyalty and all the rest, but move with the times or your beloved Pies will be extinct. Especially when you want a three team competition.

The only thing you have going for you is that there are still enough people alive to hate Collingwood, but it is getting damn hard to pass on that hatred, the young feel sorry for you, they are the future, and if they don't pass on that hatred then you will be the next Fitzroy. Kids now ask why people hate Collingwood, they say they would like to see them win a game. EEEEK - The new Freo.

Be grateful for every club that hates you, because if they don't, you will be playing in a competition of your own and you won't drag Port Power or Richmond with you, you will be HISTORY just like the true outer and the suburban ground. And every team has their ferals, check out the next team you play, the colour of the froth in the mouth is the same, the scarves are just a different colour. Hell, some people might think you only see in black and white.

Thanks for giving me a belly laugh you feral you!

There is Alf Idiot saying he is quite happy for any other club to fold. Why Alf? You would be happy with a four team comp. (only way to get in the finals..clever man)

Alf - what drivel. You on the wacky tabaccy again? Maybe in your new 'Collingwood Only' league you would have the Collingwood team members just play with each other in the MCG? From their performance over the last couple of years that's about what they've been doing anyway so perhaps no-one will notice the difference

Step right up folks! Alf Andrews' new "One Team Socialist State" - one political party, one footy team, all the drones showing up each week in their olive drab overalls for a black and white wank-fest.

Mate, you make ridiculous statements, people point out the stupidity of your remarks, then you run back to your 'Pies mates and cry about getting given "merry hell" on this board. Please stick around - you make me laugh!
