Club Statement: Liam Ryan

Keeping him straight and hungry is going to be the real test. Some good mentors around him will hopefully help.

In the last 12 odd months he:

:whitecheck: Got drafted into the AFL
:whitecheck: Made his debut in round 1 in front of 50k + fans at a new stadium
:whitecheck: Locked down a spot in the WC forward line
:whitecheck: Crashed his car after getting on the sauce
:whitecheck: Got suspended by the club
:whitecheck: Played in 3 finals, one being the grand final on the MCG
:whitecheck: Won a flag
:whitecheck: Played a key role in the passage of play which won us the grand final and has cemented his name in eagles folklore
:whitecheck: Got into a smash playing in a local footy game

Pretty full on 12 months for someone who was playing WAFL last year. I'd find a shitty bootcamp hard too, after all that.

Not concerned, seems like the media want something to happen with the bloke.

In his first game at the MCG, a GF, Ryan helped set the tone with his physicality and bounced back from a poor mistake to help manufacture the most iconic winning play of the modern era. Could've kicked 2 or 3 given a few cm difference.

This was weeks ago. Hell, I'm still coming to terms with the season, so can't blame the player. We forget how quick the turnaround is (and Simmo reminded the press of this). Not easy for some lads to adapt to the professional routine in a new environment, and Ryan's a 2nd year player in 2019. If he's fit and keen to improve, fostering that headspace is more important than a couple days at some camp.

This - if that passage of play had've been performed by Collingwood it would still be getting played on loop across AFL.com.au and being spoken up by Stevens, Ralph et al.

Given it was us doubt you'll see it replayed next year.

2 minutes to go in a GF. Clean rebound -> i50 with 2 contested marks. Set shot from the boundary is good. This kind of s**t is unheard of.

Our mental game is absolutely the best in the competition. We've made a system of out-thinking teams at the death. "Playing 4 quarters" was identified as our focus at losing pressers through Simmo's reign; the win wasn't luck.

It should be easy. Just stick a Maynard face on every piece of training equipment and watch Ryan smash em.
Maynard, lol. He took part in 3 crucial plays for us:
* The Liam Ryan hit
* The Willie Rioli shepherd
* The attempted torp from the kick-out that landed in Shuey's lap.

Insane when you think about it like that.

Insane!

For comparison, final 5 mins of the '06 granny is a total scrap fest (despite being etched in memory as the most intense and chaotic footy I've seen).

The game has changed. Players stay aware of strategy for longer. Combined with quality, competitive talls all over the ground, clutch plays in the final seconds are

Compare it to the last 5 mins in 2006 (scrapfest albeit incredible, intense footy).

Our application to stick to the game plan is a reflection of how much the game itself has changed. Players are more aware of strategy. Combined with competitive talls all over the ground, a capable engine room and some skilful smalls, clutch GF plays should become more common...

...Though for now this is the best we've seen  Thanks Liam.

It was also because Sydney were very contested/stoppage sort of team and i think by the end of those 05/06 games both teams were knackered, which then made the final qtrs very scrappy.

Another day, another instagram story posted by Liam Ryan where he is clearly in the driver's seat of a car.

This is going to end in tears.

Is it because he looks like he’s driving?

Or are we assuming worse?
Just the driving. If he gets pinged for driving without authority the club will have a lot to think about, I suspect.

Maybe he has a conditional licence?
Grounds for an extraordinary are either that you need a licence for work (for example, if you're a truckie) or for medical reasons. The licence only allows you to drive for those purposes - you're not even allowed to stop at the shops on your way home. So if he's driving his mates around (as he was in the photo) he's either breaching an EDL, in the unlikely event that he has one, or he's simply driving without authority.

Extraordinarily dumb to do it in this day and age when cops have plate recognition software that will automatically flag cars belonging to suspended drivers. Even dumber to advertise it on instagram to your thousands of followers.
