St Kilda Football Club Review - Round 12 2001

AFL - St Kilda 12.18.90 d Fremantle 11.14.80

Well it may not have been pretty to watch however we achieved the required result on the weekend in Perth. I am sure you will all agree it was encouraging to see our players respond to the Dockers hitting the lead in the 3rd quarter. Of concern for the Saints was the Dockers 101 possessions to 63 in the third quarter when their runners got on top of our midfielders. To bounce back in the final term and have 10 scoring shots to 2 was pleasing for the St Kilda team.
Several key players such as Andrew Thompson ( 33 possessions ), Peter Everitt and Aaron Hamill ( 20 possessions, 9 marks & 3 goals ) showed some composure and leadership in the final quarter to help bring home the four points. "Spider" has had a pretty consistent six weeks and is certainly giving our midfielders first use of the football with some effective ruck work. At the end of the day Stephen Milne's three goals in the final term were crucial. It was a good fightback by the youngster as he had been benched earlier in the day after several turnover errors in the forward half. .
The win gives the club a good opportunity over the next month or so to make amends for some of the disappointing defeats in the first half of the season. The players will train for two sessions this week before having four days off. Not only will the weeks break allow several players to return from injury against Richmond in Round 13, but it will give some relief to the younger players who have been carrying huge responsibilities due to our depleted stocks. Youngsters such as Justin Koschitzke (10 games), Stephen Milne ( 9 games ), Caydn Beetham ( 11 games ) and James Begley ( 7 games ) will appreciate the weekend off and the opportunity to spend some time away from the pressures of the AFL. The growing injury toll should be slightly improved for the Richmond game with Austinn Jones, Matthew Capuano, Tony Delaney, Robert Powell and perhaps Jason Traianidis likely to be available for selection.
Obviously the injury to our captain Robert Harvey was a great disappointment for all concerned and the news does not appear to be good. Robert consulted Orthapeadic Surgeon Ian Henderson on Sunday night who confirmed that the injury is more than likelyto be a torn anteroir cruciate ligament and a ruptured medial ligament. Robert will have surgery on Wednesday, the consequences being he will being sidelined for between nine and twelve months.

We will all now watch with interest which players are prepared to fill the void lerft by the Captain for the remainder of the season.

A slightly improved performance by the Scorpions against the winless Bendigo at Queen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday afternoon. In an ABC televised match, Springvale responded to the challenge by Bendigo in the final quarter to record their eighth win from eleven matches and consolidate third position on the VFL ladder. The issue of listed St Kilda players spending considerable time on the Springvale interchange bench was again prevalent in this match. St Kilda and Springvale are in the process of scheduling a meeting prior to the next Scorpions game to discuss several issues relating to player management.

On a positive note, the club was delighted with the performance of Jason Cripps who came on to the ground in the second quarter and immediately made his presence felt. He was given the task of curbing one of the key Bendigo players, which he performed well, and then went on to pick up eight possessions in the final term. He finished the match with 15 possessions in a little over 2 quarters. Matthew Young slotted straight back into his usual role on the half back line after missing last week with soreness in his previously fractured toe. He was dominant in the first half of the match & was hurting the opposition with his run and disposal from the back half. He had several opponents for the afternoon and although quietened in the 2nd half he finished with a valuable 21 possessions. Chris Oliver ( 13 possessions ) battled solo in the ruck for most of the afternoon. He excited the spectators with several giant leaps at boundary throwins and generally gave the Springvale midfielders first use of the football. Chris continues to improve and is gaining valuable experience in this competition. His efforts will be rewarded when he plays for the Victorian State team this weekend against the South Australians in Adelaide. Troy Schwarze ( 11 possessions ) was steady all day across the half back line, whilst rookie Justin Berry did some clever work in the forward line from limited opportunities. Ben Walton (11p), Daniel Wulf (11p) and Mark Wittison (1p) spent long periods on the interchange bench & their form is suffering through lack of opportunities on the ground.

The Springvale team also have a bye this week as a result of the VFL v SA state match. Their next encounter will be against the Coburg-Tigers ( Richmond alliance ) on Saturday 30th of June at Moorabbin at 2pm.

ROBERT Harvey's knee surgery yesterday (Wednesday) was successful.

The operation confirmed he had ruptured both his anterior cruciate ligament and medial ligament. There was no damage to either meniscus.

The joint is now stable and Harvey is resting comfortably in hospital.

His recovery is expected to take nine to 12 months.

Thanks STL

You're a bottler.....(& now I've written it I wonder what the real meaning is - clever person required)

Having a win & the bye is a wonderful combination for lowering footy induced stress. I hope the bastards go out there & all kill & maim each other this week, especially the tiges :-)

:D

Finally!!!

I'm sure when Springvale make the finals they won't mind relying on a few of the saints players then.

Thanks again for posting this STL, it is much appreciated.

Oh yeah, I spoke to a guy who went to the "HALO'S NEIL ROBERTS CLUB LUNCHEON" yesterday. He was very happy with the positivity shown by Blighty about the list. Apparently Blight used a few statistics to show that we are not far off the mark. (ie the quarters we have won as opposed to the supposed top teams of the competition)

inner sanctum news

thanks STL it is great to hear that ST kilda recognises that there is problem re leaving our players on the bench for most of the game. i can only hope this will improve things. it is certainly unfair for players like wittison or wulf to try and prove themselves that are worthy to paly in our team, if they do not get much of a chance week in week out.
