One of Hines recruiting philosophies was to pick plays that perform in big moments…so not surprising this is the case.
He’s picked plenty of good tallslol...so he's that good but he just cant pick a good tall
He’s picked plenty of good talls
There was the notable **** up with Stephenson ahead of Naughton…don’t know that he’s really had the picks to do much more than he did. He has always taken best available…from that perspective I don’t think he actively avoids picking talls…we’ve just not been a position to because of poor player movement management. He hasnt picked enough schoolboy talls which is why we are targetting so many post teenage talls since graham wright came in.

He doesn’t get them all right, but I’d say he’s got the second best record recruiting after Wells at Geelong. And Wells has the benefit of the Falcons.while i agree that his choices have been compromised by trade decisions, I'll go back to your original point that he recruits big time players and he picks a guy like stephenson who doesnt like physical contact. You'd think an expert would pick that one up. I think a lot players learn to live with physical pressure through experience, but jaidyn has a huge problem - so I wouldnt believe in any of the spin hine throws out. I dont disrespect him because he's more inclined than most to recruit players like ginnivan who dont have speed and marking power - bianco and ben crocker being examples. And in all three, he's probably looking for personality traits more than athletic ability but sometimes I'm not sure he gets it right.

Stephenson duped a lot of people by the look of it, had an outstanding first year in a performing side and won the rising star….fell off a cliff pretty quickly after that so I agree a bust.
Going back to my original point both Bianco and Ginivan perform in big moments…
To be fair to Hine we gave away 1st rounders like they were boiled lollies, and traditionally the best keys go very earlyand both are taller than me so I suppose by definition they're talls... and meanwhile we can continue to trade and use cat b mechanisms and other methods to try to get some talls on the list because they're not getting drafted by hine in the national draft...

The strike rate is lower though and hard to justify because the talls go early which leaves some really good mids and smalls availableListen guys, this all started with that comment about Hine targetting guys who perform in big moments. I just mentioned stephenson. And all I'm saying is that we are trading for talls and going for them in the cat bs and the midseason.....because they haven't been taken in the national draft. Who knows. It might be the best way to get some cheapies.....but if you dont try for talls at pick 40 then you wont find one at pick 40. If you keep picking midsized half back flankers, you'll find a decent midsized halfback flanker at pick 40.... that is all that I'm saying. The irish idea to get two talls was a disaster. Dont tell me about covid. I've said all i want on this...

I'm not saying they aren't there, but the strike rate is lower especially for tallsspent 5 minutes looking at 2018 draft...
jordan butts 42 games rookie Harry Edwards 27 games rookie Jacob Koschitzke pick 52 36 games .........

No I think it just means the better players and higher percentage of hits will come from non keys in those rounds, doesn't change the fact they gave 1st rounders away like confetti and Hine didn't have access to the best keysyes the strike rate is lower.....so its understandable that hine doesn't try to pick them. It reflects badly on him

We blew 8 first rounders and not a single player is still at the club, Gubby and co destroyed a premiership window and now we're stuck fixing it. Hine just didn't have access because of their stuff ups, he got Naughton wrong but we probably don't make the 2018 GF without Stephenson's one good year (Naughton took a year to get going) and if some *en WA umpire had paid a block we'd have the flag and being saying it was worth it... such are the whims of the footy godsI'm not discounting his efforts... just that the we have recently been trying to source talls because we are short of them. We've been short of them for a number of years. The irish idea was even less likely than picking a pick 50 in the draft. We have tried basketballers for talls and americans with limited success. Obviously not a high priority in the past....but it seems to have become a stronger priority in recent trading and mid season drafts.
Maybe we should just let derek recruit half back flankers. He's pretty good at it and is it that important to have tall guys? How long can we keep this going?
