Co-Captains. WHY?

My immediate reaction was that it's exciting. Love that Newcombe's been made co captain.

We are in a very healthy position from a leadership point of view - unlike some clubs which really have a dearth of possible leaders. Perhaps it's an acknowledgement of this.

I think it is a great idea. 1) Nuke has great leadership qualities and this will help him transition into the sole captaincy role in the coming year/s, 2) we need a big year from Nuke and this might just be that extra little bit of motivation to take him to the next level

Really not a fan of co-Captains, but will see how it goes.

Nuke is my favourite player, but would have Moore as Captain over him. Really surprised he was overlooked!

Why would they not have agreement? They are both singing from the same hymn book, they are part of the same team, trying to achieve the same goal, with the same gameplan and same coach.

I agree with Sam’s sentiments, change is good.
Doing something the same way all the time simply because “that’s what we’ve always done” doesn’t make a great deal of sense to me, and we now have two of our best onfield leaders leaning on each other, rather than just the 1 player being responsible for everything.
The video didn't inspire me with confidence in the decision. Was a bit meandering and came across a bit wishy washy. Change isn't always good if you are changing for the sake of change. But that's my opinion.

The club makes decisions all the time that I don't agree with, but I'm not going to start drinking the bathwater cause they say it's a good thing. However, don't take this as me not being 100% Hawthorn.

Why have we decided to go with co-captains. Not sure I agree with this one.

EDIT: Sicily and Newcombe. Got a text message.

Sicily plans on taking no crap from anyone. As such he'll probably get suspended a lot, hence why the co-captain can Captain the side when Sicily is away!

I think it's more of things like, who's going to address the players in the huddle. Remember Hodge's infamous "I hope they come out and kick the first 4 goals, then we'll rise and show them speech." If he had a co-captain on equal footing they may say "don't say stupid stuff like that to them" and then there's a conflict.

I personally am not a fan of co-captains, I think it's a slippery slope from co-captains, to long sleeve jumpers and sun glasses at grand final parades.

But I think in recent times outside of McEvoy I feel all our Captains had felt the burden of being captain and it's effected their performance. Stratton went from career best year to trouble, Roughead was just coming back from cancer to was too much for him in the last years of his career, and Sicily last year too when he's had injury and form issues the pressure can be strong for him to be a great leader and the best player.

If having 2 captains means they share a bit of leadership and lighten the burden a bit so be it.

Suspect this is what it usually looks like when people who aren’t performers/actors get plonked in front of a camera and told to ad lib giving someone an unexpected massive promotion 😂

As much as I like Moore, he is a good player but he goes missing in big games/finals. Newcombe has shown for the past two finals campaigns that he is our prime mover and on field leader. This appointment should make him grow even further. I was wondering how things would turn out for Sicily this year. Thought he was disappointing in the finals last year and was easily distracted. Those nauseating punch ons with Tex and others during the Adelaide final looked really bad. Thought he also lacked a bit during that Geelong final when the team was screaming for some on field leadership. That game, IMO, needs to be used for the entire team as a template going forward. They should think about their second half performance every game they play this year.

They've re filmed it!

I like leadership from someone in the middle rather than one end of the ground regardless of two captains or Captain or Vice Captain. Never a fan of Stratton or Sic as Captain.
Newc can influence a game directly or reinforce things at key time in the ‘guts’
Maybe we go to Newc alone in 2027?

Hmm... Might need to process this one.

Initial thoughts:

- Sicily hasn't been a great captain. I think this reflects that, and avoids any fallout from demoting him.

- I can only think Day's body is the reason he has been overlooked. And that's fair, sadly.

- I thought it was always Moore and Day fighting it out. I'm pretty shocked it wasn't Moore if honest.

- Love Jai. But I really didn't see this for him. But he is the exact personality that is proven to rise with responsibility. Career year and AA incoming.

- If Day gets back and sees out the year, Day and Newcomb co-capt makes the most sense to me.

Sicily has been good as captain in a time where the club has won finals and on the come up after a rebuild.

No one has any idea, Newcombe is one of the best leaders at the club. So well deserved, great recognition. Day may of been but maybe not, Moore was overlooked aswell.

Agree.

Could do.

Not only is Jai tough as nails but he must be incredibly professional to be offered this position which is awesome.

He is carrying the midfield, so I hope this does not put too much pressure on him which could impact his game.

But he is getting better every year as a player and leader so there is no reason why he cannot dominate at both.

In guessing they might have gone with co captains to give Sic more time to concentrate on getting his body right so that he can be back to being a top ten player in the league again in 2026.

I'm not a huge fan of co-captains either but looking at it from that perspective it makes sense as a fit and firing Sicily improves us a huge amount.

Happy to see Newk rewarded as well, he has already given the club so much in such a short time frame.

That's a good thought.

Sicily and Day both need to get healthy and back to their best.

Moore might even need the release of not putting so much on his shoulders. He was poor for the first half of 2025 and has really struggled in finals as we know.

Sicily and Moorey being at their AA best to start 2026 would be a huge boost.

I dont mind it. It allows sicily to focus on the defensive half of the ground, duke focus on the forward half.

Massive issue the last few years has been leadership, and sicily trying to do too much. Particularly at one end of the ground, it makes it really tough

Man, people have very strong feelings about some random stuff 😂
I’ve been against it forever. Was glad we didn’t do it with Hodge and Mitchell. Not sure if I’ve posted it before but have spoken many times to mates that i would’ve liked it to be in our constitution that there’s one captain. I’m not saying they’ll do a poor job, I do think it’s a poor idea though.
