Co-Captains. WHY?

If I recall Mitch's book correctly, he did want co-captaincy with Hodge back in '08 but Kennet knocked it down.

The social media clips were very focused on Sic's welfare and sharing the load.

I see this playing into Sam's broader view of bucking some of the trends of the past long sleeves (lol) and explicit focus on the welfare of young parents (and his issues with Clarko).

Don't have a strong view either way but see the rational.

Left field, but how often do you drop an e?

I see a lot of positives.

First and foremost, it’s a great honour for Newc to be given the title. Which will no doubt give him a bit to bounce off of, with the ability to further his leadership growth.

He’s the type to use this to only get better. But I doubt it’ll change much, the reason it won’t is given Sic said it himself. He won’t need to change the way he acts, as he’s already been a highly regarded leader. It’s just a title to give him some recognition, both inside the club but outside.

It’ll be interesting how it works, but I have no doubt it’ll work for both, gives Sicily a bit more of a formal help which he’ll need as he gets fit again and regains his A grade form.

What happens beyond 2026 will be interesting too, for now. Big fan.

Not a fan of Two Captains, I'm all for making Jai our Captain, and I think it's a excellent choice, but they Should have made Newcombe the captain and Sicily stand down to support him like when Sam stood down for Hodge.

Love his footy ability but it’s simply incorrect to imply Sicily as captain has been a success. I think it’s sad we have stooped to the level of consolation, to scared to do what’s right we have an abbreviated version.

Sis has a great football brain and has incredible talent but I think he would admit he can be a bit of a melty flog when provoked.
Teams have targeted him regularly and it's been detrimental to our game.

Jai seems unflappable and having him available to lead while Sis is 'otherwise occupied' can only be a good thing imo.

I have never liked co captains but i also don't really care that much. I think Newk is the obvious captain long term and if they feel Sicily staying on to be a co captain will help with that in the short term then so be it.

I remember hating it when Penrith made Cleary and Yeo co captains and 4 premierships later it is fair to say it probably worked out okay.

Co-Captains is a bit odd for us, but if we have two people who simply scream "leadership", then why not?

Sicily has been my favourite player since Sammy finished with us, probably because I see a bit of the "melty flog" in him that I see in myself. And there's nothing wrong with that Italian passion!! It's obvious how much he cares.

Newk though, may not wear his heart on his sleeve quite as much, but he just gets the job done. And as BobHawk and Dewyyyyy have mentioned, the bigger the occasion the bigger the performance. He's come a long way from the slightly chubby chippy's apprentice to an elite player, and I'll be ****ed if he's not setting the best possible example for the rest of the squad.

In some ways a pairing of Sicily and Newk makes a lot of sense.

Hodge was such a good captain because he paired the inspirational follow me leadership style by example (ie Newk) with the sharp football brain / campaigner style (Sicily).

So by my maths a Newk / Sic combo should equate to a Hodge style captainship and I’m all aboard for that!

So if I understand you correctly Simon, what you're saying is we need to make sure we all have room for more years to be tattooed on our arms under the premiership cup that's sitting right above the 2008 2013 2014 2015?

To be fair, I think Newc is able to then go back to being the sole captain. Well the club goes back to a sole captain, in 2027. He will get a good chance to learn from Sicily and co beforehand.

Has the follow me type of leadership, has grown a lot as a voice of the club, and he’s one of the hardest workers. Definitely has the campaigner in him when it’s required too.

Day will likely if he can stay fit, become a vice captain due to his ability to do the same.

Let’s see how it goes this year before we make plans for 2027.

If it works well and Sic keeps his form we could roll with it again in 2027.

I personally don’t like the idea of co captains but we can’t deny that quite a few clubs have had success with it recently. Maybe these days being an AFL captain is such a big role it’s better of being split into two?

You are right that Newk does have a sneaky amount of campaigner in him, he just hides it better than The Blonde Prince (who wears his campaigner like a badge of honour!)

Yeah agree. Just saying it’s possible for 2027 or 28. I also agree how it’s worked for modern footy and how common it is now.

Newc uses his campaigner in the right way. Doesn’t really ever give stupid frees away but he protects his mates, and gives the opposition grief both with his footballing and using his body.

I remember him basically telling Nick Holman to shut up and stop whinging with hand gestures which was pretty ****ing funny since he drilled the goal after it.

Jai is an interesting choice. Thought possibly Dylan Moore might be ahead of him. Sadly Will Day remains spiritual captain

Anyone that thinks that this two captains' choice was to avoid Sic being embarrassed or him getting pissed or some sort of appeasement doesn't know Sam Mitchell. Everything that Sam does is meticulously planned and thought out with input from other coaches and past player leaders. Sam also knows what it is to be captain and then relinquish it to someone else.

This is an objective decision by Sam and Hawthorn there is no emotion involved. Sam thinks this is the best way forward knowing the strengths and weaknesses of both players and the playing group. Moorey is stiff but he would understand that this decision hasn't come about lightly.
