Co-captains

Goodwin is hugely uncomfortable in front of the media. His interview about the co-captaincy is hard to watch, he's just dying. Hopefully he gets more comfortable with it in time and really who cares if he is a gun coach. Felt for him though watching that clip.

Did he say if it was player driven yet?

Don't like it. Gut feel.
My gut feel is that this isn't the action of the streamlined club we want to be. Its sticking people in positions that don't need filling.

Yes, we can go on about the wank of how he's heir apparent and loves the club - but why is this move necessary? Does this move merit going behind the established captain's back?

Bloody hell, you've nailed it there I reckon. I said earlier that it really wouldn't affect off-field stuff, but it really has the potential to, unless there are very mature discussions held about it from the start.

Eg, what does it mean for that media/PR 'Captain's Day'. Like do we send two? Surely not. And if we have to send one, how does the club choose? Does whoever doesn't get to go feel pissed off (even if only internally). What does it mean for team cohesion? etc.

This kind of stuff can often be so intangible that it's hard to know if it really matters. But it also seems like the kind of thing players talk about ten years later when they're on Open Mike. 'Oh yeah, the day they made Viney co-captain, it was a kick in the guts for me...' etc etc

Anyway. Shouldn't panic haha. God it doesn't take much to set me off.

I was interested to see the article on the MFC website said that Jack and Todd were the first father/son combo to captain the club on a full-time basis. Does anyone know of any MFC captains that had a father or son skipper the club for any matches? I couldn't think of any off the top of my head.

The only family members i can think of who were both captains were the Cordner brothers, Don and Dennis. I can't think of any father/son

There's not many across the league. The Watsons are the only other one I think.

Viney is as natural a leader as you'll ever see. Awesome move not waiting and Jones getting it for another year will make for a smooth transition.

Originally i was against the idea and it didn't feel right. But it feels like it's going to be a transition from Jones to Viney as he starts to step away a little. The one thing that leaves me skeptical is that Jones didn't seem to be consulted

How i imagine it went down.

"Jones we need you to do a quick talk to the media before our intraclub"

"Sure thing Goody, the usual stuff yeah"

"No, Viney's your co captain now"

"Wait what?..."

But seriously, i don't know what to think, i'm left in two minds. I can see the points of both arguments.

Viney learning developing role to succeed jones VS Rushed decision and unnecessary title while jones was doing fine sole

Not f/s but Josh Kennedy and his Grand Father John Kennedy
Josh isn't captain, McVeigh is.

Edit: Didn't realize he'd been appointed. Onya JPK. But also not captain of the same side...

I thought you were making a political joke.

Awesome move by the club. The most natural born leader the MFC has had at the club for a bloody long time. He's just been appointed club captain and most people here are bitching and moaning about the decision. Let's face it, he's been co-captain of this club from just about the minute he walked through the doors. His attitude on and off the field is absolutely second to none. Jones doesn't deserve to lose the captaincy, and Viney absolutely deserves the title, so I praise the decision by the club and congratulate Jack on being our new captain. The guy is a gun and I see a lot of Luke Hodge in him tbh with his leadership on and off the field. Leads by example and will captain one of the most important times of the MFC's history. Can't think of a better bloke to do that than Jack Viney!

This is the best. The official beginning of the Jack Viney era. Forget Viney the fearless, brutal god-man of a footballer the dude deserves to be captain purely on the magnificent jaw he has. :hearts:

Given Chunk starts off saying he was initially surprised, but the idea grew on him and Viney saying that Goody pitched the idea to him early in the week, it does sound like it has come from outside the playing group. I agree that it feels a year or two early in that case. Still, nothing like the Neeld decision.

I'm not a fan of two captains, I think there should be only one. However I think it's a transition thing which im ok with. Certainly different from the neeld era two jacks captain. The list is better and there's better leadership to support the young fella.

Anyone who disagrees with your obviously personal opinion on the decision is 'bitching and moaning'? Give me a spell.

Jones has never been a hugely polished media performer (though he looks like Roos when compared to Goodwin), but I think him admitting that he was surprised isn't a good thing. It doesn't sound like it was player driven, it sounds like a coach with grand ideas pushing ahead with them. Maybe Viney becomes our greatest ever captain, but in my opinion this just shows that the club has a way to go yet in proving that the coaching succession will work. I simply can't imagine a world where Roos would have done this and left any room for Jones to have been at all surprised. This strikes me as a Tony Abbott-like 'captains call' (excuse the pun).

Also, this is nothing against Viney. I think he could still use another year as VC to learn to channel his aggression into more Rance styles hits, and less Ebert, but he would be a very deserving captain if we'd needed one. As it stands, we didn't need one - because we had a 29-year old incumbent who is already a club legend and was obviously under the impression that he was continuing.

Please don't mention Tony Abbott's name, He's almost the Tom Gillies of Australian politics
I was going to go with a Trump-style 'executive decision', but sadly there's no judicial authority to block this move from Goodwin.
