Don’t understand the 6 month offer. You either want as coach or not. If it’s clear players and staff find him completely over bearing then just sack him. Or if you want him to stay on then a proper extension.

I do find some of the ex players and teammates of Langer going overboard.

So you think CA have covered themselves in glory here, I take it?
Lol, of course not. That's not even debatable.

But just because it's been handled poorly doesn't mean it wasn't the right call.

Now all that's left is Langer's mates, going after the only truly public facing role at CA, the captain. Creating headlines for the sake of backing their mate. Exhausting.

If I was to don my elegant tin foil bonnet I might suggest that CA still sees the Cape Town incident as a consequence of the team culture inherited from the Waugh/Ponting era and is looking to explicitly move away from it.

If Smith, Warner and the bowlers (who amazingly didn't know anything about the management of the ball for that three-day period, and you'll get a legal letter if you suggest otherwise) are that sensitive about taking account for their own decisions and behaviour, it says quite a bit about the current playing group.

WA Cricket chief Christina Matthews has her say

WA Cricket chief Christina Matthews slams Cricket Australia's treatment of Justin Langer 'as a person'

"It's up to CA who they want to coach the Australian side. My difficulty here is how Justin's been treated as a person.

"I don't think he's been treated with any sort of respect, kindness or compassion."

"We had a very successful period with Justin, but that's not to say you don't disagree on things," she said.

"Everybody knows he likes honest, up-front conversations.

"Unfortunately, some people — players, administrators, whatever — find those conversations challenging and that's, I think, when things get out of control."

From all that's been said publicly in the last few days, it appears it's the older players who are creating the divide

Lol why wouldn’t anyone take notice of the past player’s, legends of the game and their opinions hold more value than the cheats that surrounded sandpaper gate who if the rumours are true were pushing Langer out, seems like CA learnt nothing from that mess.
The same past players that were team mates with Langer… Why should they have a say over who the current group want as coach. Coaching is a hell of a lot to do with player management and people skills, it seems he was lacking in that area.

Wouldn't be that concerned if Langer went to England. Would rather that than Gary Kirsten getting that job

Also Tubs has been saying some real bizarre stuff about this. Needs to pull his head in.

All the best to Langer. Was never convinced he was getting the best out of the team.

Lol the current group where two were directly involved with sandpaper gate , and the bowlers who some how didn’t know the ball had been tampered with and one is the current captain and they wanted Langer gone .

The current player’s are mirroring what most of Australia thinks about the sacking the captain and CA has misjudged the fall out.

Players tucked up and copped a significant and over the top punishment, move the **** on.

It’s pretty simple, if the group don’t like you in sport as a coach you will not survive. CA are a joke and managed this poorly, but the players have every right to express how they feel about the coach.

What also worries me is when the new coach is appointment will he have the say to make significant changes to the team? or is it going to be the players calling the shots?? as it seems atm

We have an opener in warner who is in the twilight of his career......will the new/coach selectors have the courage to be able to move him on ??

Plus Lyon is getting on

The senior players will have to be told at some stage that they need to move on or will they stay on for financial benefit and put themselves ahead of the team

interesting times

Oh you are one of those people… Never mind

It’s not hard to understand, his job is to get the best out of the players. If the players don’t feel he is able to do that of course he will get moved on. Clearly that’s how the players feel

The players don't have to like the coach but they are less likely to listen to him or do what he tells them to do if they don't like him, they also spend a lot of time with the coach especially when they are away on tours so if they don't like someone they spend every day with it makes it difficult.

I reckon the board think the chance of success in Pakistan is slim. They therefore wanted that probable loss chalked up on Langer’s watch, safe in the knowledge that a new coach could then start afresh with a lot easier schedule. Don’t blame Langer for telling them to get stuffed after that insulting 6 month extension offer.

This reply below nails my thoughts exactly.

Thats beside the point because its looking at the results. You dont tell the truth because its going to get you a good result you do it because its the right thing to do and even if you get a bad result thats worth doing. I agree that Cummins was put in a bad situation by CA but he still has a clear lack of ethics and thats on him and no one else. Thats not a real leader.

Its called CA has no idea of how to get off the fence. Little wonder Cummins thinks its ok to behave the way he did with that example above him.

I think most of langers teammates are pillocks but even a broken clock is right twice a day and on this occasion most of them are correct with their comments about how badly CA and Cummins both mishandled this process (which is a separate issue from whether the right decision was made in the end we wont know that until a few years from now).

Do not share your concern as the coach is one of three selectors. While there is some related dialogue with the skipper, the players don't select the squads/teams.

Warner will get the tap of the shoulder when his contributions become consistently low, ala Lyon when he stops taking regular wickets...

Mark Taylor also said today that the players need to be careful not to create a divide between the older players Ponting, Waugh and himself are not happy. Be careful not to create a divide.

With all due respect to those greats, this has nothing to ******* do with you. You have no right to expect the players to endorse Langer as coach just because he is an old mate of you guys.
There is a real jilted lover vibe coming from that generation of players atm.

I actually think the opposite of what many on here are saying and think this displays very strong leadership from Cummins. He obviously would have been keenly aware that rejecting Langer would be very unpopular with that generation of players. Players who are now the loudest voices in the Cricket Media.

To me, it seems clear Cummins wants to lead this team to it’s own achievements and is prepared to represent his players. I see this as a rejection of the ‘boys club’ - not a victory for it.

I am going to put it this way: while this has certainly been a mess, I do not think there was any way Langer was leaving this job after the success over the past 6-8 months without there being a mess. He has the ideal combination of traits to ensure that, no matter how this was handled, it would've resulted in precisely this outcome; short fuse, holds grudges, controlling, obsessive, and a number of extremely prominent friends around the Australian cricket establishment in commentary, the media, coaching and administration.

That it's gone the way it's gone is unsurprising in the slightest.

They are professional sportsmen, they are paid very well to get the best out of themselves.

Dude, he just won a world cup and had a convincing Ashes series win. If the players are unhappy with winning because they're not mates with the coach then they're in elite sport for the wrong reason. It's not the 5th grade scrubbers where you rock up to sink piss.

One thing's for sure, the pressure is now on those players to get the results. Even a bad ODI series coming up is going to get the blowtorch applied.
