Ian Chappell has taken a sensational swipe at past players defending Justin Langer, calling them the former Australia coach’s “PR machine” while defending Test captain Pat Cummins.

Brett Lee has been very measured too.

Yeah he only coached 2 away series and one of them was neutral Pakistan in the UAE.

More of a reflection on CA and the ICC that Australia have only had 2 away test tours in 4 years.

Covid didn't help but how many test tours got cancelled in that time just 2 from memory South Africa and Bangladesh.

So basically only 4 test tours abroad were scheduled in last 4 year cycle.

Just cancel playing anyone away who isn’t england or India was the plan, covid was a convenient excuse.

So from that, coaches better treat the players like soft cuddly bears instead of intensity, as they don’t want to be pushed too hard to win. It’s players vs whoever gets hired. Yeah good luck
Only positive messages and just let them **** up with no accountability is what I gathered. Like when they mentally imploded against Stokes in england better not tell them off for that.

i think the point is he making is that they need a coach who is going to teach them something and refine their games.

The time of a fire and brim stone coach is from AFL in the 90s.

There is literally a line coach for every skill, whos job it is to coach and refine that certain skill whether is batting bowling or fielding.

That is not the head coach's job.

It is a bullshit excuse.

I can just imagine that flog Matty Hayden reading that last line, brilliant stuff. Great statement overall by Cummo.

Agree, and while Haydos was critical of PC emotionally defending his great mate JL, I think you'll find PC's swipe was more directed at Bitch Johnson and the like...

well its his team now.

CA might have thought they were putting in a board puppet like Paine. I think they are now being disabused of that.
That's not a positive. Khawaja was right, the days of captains being solely in charge of the team is no longer viable. The idea that Cummins is best placed to assess his own strengths and weaknesses is flawed, the idea that he could do the same for other players is absurd. Yes, they each have their own coaches but someone needs to have a look at the bigger picture.

The perception remains that the players pushed Langer out, that the next coach will be more of a yes-man to the players; the last time we let the inmates run the asylum, someone thought it was a good idea to take sandpaper out on to the field.
