With the home & away system done & dusted, the focus for teams that missed out on finals will be internal reviews to figure out what went wrong. Inevitably the focus at some clubs will turn towards the coaching staff. With this in mind, there are two head coaches who should be nervous about their futures :
Alan Richardson- St Kilda were tipped to be there or thereabouts for finals this year, but plummeted down the ladder with poor kicking, scrappy skill levels and questionable player development conspiring to deliver the Saints a 16th place finish. Given pre-season expectations Richo is probably the favourite to walk the plank first.
Brendan Bolton- three years into his rebuild, Carlton are regressing to Neeld Melbourne levels of bad. While this rebuild has been flagged as a generational change requiring some short term pain, the evidence of any gains is negligible. Patrick Cripps and a couple of other youngsters aside, Carlton’s list is woeful and the young players are regressing - Jacob Weitering, a number one draft pick, being exhibit A for this trend. While Bolton was signed on until 2020, if the results don’t start improving before the bye in 2019, Bolton will likely be sacked too.
These are the two standout contenders but I’d be interested in hearing who else posters believe to be on thin ice.
