TIGERS SHAPING AS NEW HOME FOR FORMER HAWKS

Richmond has emerged as a likely new home for premiership Hawthorn teammates Luke Breust and Taylor Duryea as they step into coaching.

Both Breust and Duryea are deep in talks with the Tigers about joining what would be a stacked development team at Punt Rd, alongside North Melbourne great Jack Ziebell.

Former head of development Sam Lonergan (stoppages/midfield) and VFL coach Jake Batchelor (defence) were recently moved into assistant coach line roles at Richmond.

Breust was much sought-after in his retirement after 308 games and three flags with the Hawks, with his playing career ending this month with an unfortunate knee injury.

The small forward great is set to join good mate Duryea at Richmond, who won a VFL flag with Footscray in his last game for the club on Sunday, capping a 219-game AFL career with the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn.

Breust and Duryea played together in the 2014 and 2015 premierships at the Hawks, when Richmond senior coach Adem Yze was at the club, creating a connection that brought the pair to the Tigers.

Yze and Duryea worked closely together when the Tigers coach was backline coach at the Hawks.

Richmond has consciously planned to deepen its development group given its young list, with Breust set to work with young forwards and Duryea defenders.

Based on our recent record with injuries, especially to some key younger guys, a guy recovering from a knee reco seems a great fit to be our development coach

Tigers strengthen development coaching department

Richmond is delighted to announce the addition of recently retired champion small forward Luke Breust and his former dual premiership teammate Taylor Duryea to the AFL coaching structure.

The pair have signed on as development coaches, where they will play a key role in guiding Richmond’s emerging youngsters.

Bruest will be good for Hotton as well.
Seems like the type who will be good for everyone tbf but agree especially the medium/small forwards and the guys that rotate through those roles

Seems like he is well respected universally and a culture pusher at the Hawks

Hopefully those who flew off the handle about Batchelor & Lonergan being promoted from within now understand why we didn't continue to hunt big name assistants once Chaplin didn't pan out as it meant those savings have allowed us to expand our development coach ranks.

This should mean better development of the younger players as we now effectively have development coaches for the forwards mids & backs, but also allows the line coaches to be more focused on the overall element of their roles rather than splitting time between guiding the senior group and helping to develop the younger players.

It is set up as follows:

Yze - Senior Coach
Rutten - Senior Assistant
Caracella - Midfield
Lonergan - Stoppages
Batchelor - Backline
Newman - Forwards
Maric - Rucks
Ziebull Bruest Duryea - Development
Madgen - VFL Coach

Richmond has appointed former Collingwood defender Jack Madgen as the Club’s new VFL coach, taking over from Jake Batchelor.

Madgen played 49 AFL games for Collingwood between 2018 and 2022 after being recruited as a Category B Rookie from the Cairns Taipans (NBL).

The 32-year-old has since been captain of Adelaide’s SANFL team, playing 53 games across the past three years.

Madgen has also been the Head Coach of the Crows Boys Academies and a line coach for their successful AFLW team.

does anyone know what mads has done? never heard of him
Captain of Adelaide’s sanfl side, coach of Adelaide’s academy side and line coach for crows AFLW

Not a gang busters resume tbf but seems to have a lot of experience in the development side of the game that works well for us

Yeah definitely a little bit unconventional but I like it in a way

Brings in some fresh prospective to the role, he’s only 32 so hopefully he develops into a great coach along with the players
