It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance??

Equal first - Pagan,Sheedy
Next level -Wallace,Eade,Blight,Matthews,Malthouse
Then the brightest of the new boys so far
- Daniher,Brittan
Then three first year rookies -Schwab,Thompson,Frawley
just going at the minute - Judge,Ayres,Drum
dead set shocker - Williams (makes Judge look happy in comparison)

But thats pretty much just going by performances of the past. Premier/GF coaches will always be given some rating.

Should revist this topic at the end of the year and see how much perceptions might have changed then.

Anybody who brings a team up from 12th to play in seven consecutive prelims and two premierships is going to be pretty hard to beat...in fact too hard.

PAGAN (66% winning ratio...unbelievable!!)
SHEEDY
BLIGHT
MATTHEWS
Daniher looks OK early in his career.

The rest aren't really in the league.

The rest aren't really in the league.

Then Malthouse must be up there. 10 finals seasons in a row and 2 flags

Pagan
Blight - Again so rated because, compared to Sheedy, he left when he knew his message was no longer being heard, and delivered two flags and three GF's.

As CIK would put it, DAYLIGHT

Wallace - gets the best out of a second rate playing list.

Daniher - what he has done with an ordinary list, one prelim, one GF and a shocker, has been unbelievable.

Sheedy - So rated because he I believe changed his squad to maintain his own survival on a number of occasions. He may have won four flags, but with the talent he has had at his disposal should it have been more????????

Then a gap to

Matthews - OK, but he does have the cattle. Anyone who wins a flag at Coll;wood, the worst side to win a flag in the history of football Jamie Turnover, Shane Kerrison, James Manson, Damian Monkhorst, Craig Starcevich, Tony Francis - all premiership players - perhaps I am a little harsh on him.

Eade - A great job with an ordinary list again.

Brittain* - based on his work thus far as A/C

Malthouse - never adapted his style since he had the cattle at West Coast.

Then the young guns where the jury is still out.

Frawley
Thompson
Schwab

And the hopeless

Judge
Drum
Ayres
Williams

who are all devoid of any reasonable concepts when it comes to football.

Daniher (extremely inventive)
Pagan (as above)
Wallace (ditto)
Sheedy
Eade
Blight
Matthews
Malthouse
Thompson (best of the rookies)
Frawley
Schwab
Brittain (too early to tell)
Drum
Judge
Ayres
Williams (dead-set dud)

Blight
Malthouse
Daniher
Wallace
Eade
Thompson
Frawley
Schwab
Brittain - unsure about him

(Log in to remove this ad.)

1. Pagan (winning stats don't lie, the best in the business)
2. Sheedy (Rat Cunning, brutally honest to players and great motivator 4 prems)
3. Blight (innovative and highly confident which he instills into players 2 prems 4 gfs )
4. Wallace (perhaps the fact that he gets the best out of his team with a weaker list makes him the best coach, still a ? over developing young players)
5. Malthouse (got the dogs to a prelim, 10 years of finals at WC, his greatness will be established if the young list he has put together make the finals in the next 3 years)
6. Daniher (intelligent and honest, has the makings of great coach)
7. Matthews (hard task master 1 prem, is he getting the best out of the strong list he's got at the moment?)
8. Eade (first 2 years were fantastic, however his message may be wearing thin, whilst the flooding tactic may have been effective when first implemented other coaches have worked it out. It also makes the game extremely ugly to watch)
9. Thompson (the best of the first year coaches, got a fairly weak list into the 8)
10. Schwabb (1st year got an 'emerging' list into the 8)
11. Frawley (honest and disciplined, will the tiges board show the same characteristics when they finish 9th again)
12. Drum (signs of improvement through the development of youngsters)
13. Brittain (would have put him last as he hasn't coached yet, however as an integral part of the panel last year at Carlton he must haved done something right as the Blues were the 2nd best team, must be better than the three below him anyway, hell a pumpkin would be)
14. Judge (crap, had destabelised the playing list at WC, developed a couple of youngsters at Hawthorn)
15. Ayres (crap, got the cats to a gf but I have credited Blight for that)
16. Williams (crap, took over from Cahill and the side has suffered)

After Blight has won the flag with the Saints this year he will take over the number 1 spot.

OK

Deadset legends of the game

Pagan - record is simply awesome.
Sheedy - a bit of a dickhead but must be doing something right.
Matthews - Much like the Barassi at Noth Melbourne days of the mid-70's, players hate his guts but they still win, almost in spite of him really.
Blight - Its anyones guess what Captain Wacky will do at Moorabbin this year. One thing is for certain, there won't be a dull moment !

Safe as Houses

Wallace - Could end up being the greatest coach never to win a flag.
Schwab - Pick of the newcomers, softly spoken style, gets results, players seem to warm to him, top bloke.
Eade - Highly regarded by his peers. Very thorough and analytical but at the same time is very emotional and fiery, now that Parkin has left, Eade would be most fiery coach in the League now.
Thompson - Another good newcomer, got the absolute maximum from Geelong last season, no mean achievement.
Daniher - most underated coach in the AFL

Good average coaches
Frawley - a good start, but we said that about Northey, Gieschen, Walls, etc etc
Drum - Working to a long term plan, but how much time does he really have ?
Malthouse - Surrounded and protected by McGuire-Collingwood hype, reputation could take a real battering if they aren't careful.
Brittain - unknown quantity, will go well if he can get some respect from players and club hierachy.

Swinging in the breeze

Judge - a bad start, too negative, must get back to the basics which he is actually pretty good at.
Ayres - Can't coach
Williams - classic Port Adelaide, but that doesn't cut the mustard in this company

cheers

Prior to last year I would have had Pagan above Sheedy quite comfortably, but Sheedy's ability to out-coach Pagan twice last year as well as the Ansett Cup puts him back on top.
Fortunately for me, I wasn't at the finals match between the two sides (I worked that day), but I was at the H&A game where Pagan had no answer to Sheedy's brigade of runners who were able to position themselves perfectly for every contest. There were three Essendon players to every contested mark, and three running past for the crumbs.
Not sure if it was poor fitness, poor checking or poor tactics on North's part, but it did seem Sheedy had the answers that day, and he out-coached Pagan.
The challenge for Pagan now is to re-model or completely change the Pagan's Paddock game-plan which worked so well during the late 90s, but was found to be stale last year partly because other teams (particularly Essendon) had worked it out, and partly because it was predictable and left few alternatives when Carey was absent or carrying injuries. I do have confidence in Pagan to think of something, his record does speak for itself.

Darky,

Yes, it's me. The real Dan24. Those that know me, know that I think Pagan is easily the leagues best coach. I've been saying it for ages. Im surprised you havn't read some of the stuff I've written about Pagan. Just because I barrack for Essendon, doesn't mean I have to be biased.

ODN's,

You need to understand me a bit better. I actually enjoy your posts, and it's good to FINALLY have some Carlton people on here to argue with/against.

But when I talk about Essendon being "UNDISPUTEDLY" the greatest, I'm often talking with a grain of salt. You know, just bragging, often with no basis.

I'm aware of our place in history, and I'm aware the the Blues have made the finals more times and have a better head-to-head win ratio.

I'm not as biased as you think I am.
