Every coach is dependent on the cattle he has available to him. Barassi had the best mob of cattle by the length of the Flemington straight at North Melbourne and performed accordingly. He had an ordinary list at Melbourne and showed his true ability.

A very good coach who had one moment of inspiration and the luck to go to the club with the first modern super list.

Most over-rated coach in VFL history. Won flags at North with cheque book recruitment of interstate players and proved at Melbourne and Sydney what an average coach he was.

I always found it most satisfying that the Hawks beat them in 1976 and 1978, North with their high priced foreign legion and the Hawks had only 1 interstate recruit, Rodney Eade who was recruited from Tasmania as a schoolby.

The same can be said about Allan Jeans and Leigh Matthews.

Mastthews is on record as stating the the Brisbane 2001-2003 sides could have coached themselves to flags.

Jeans was blessed with a plethora of talent.

He did okay at sydney but still tremendously overrated as a coach.
Jock McHale would have also struggled without the likes of the Coventrys, Colliers, Jack Regan etc.

There has never been a multiple premiership winning coach that won flags because of average talent.

Except of course the heartbeat of the side like dual Brownlow medallist Keith Greig, champion full back David Dench and Schimma were all locally recruited.

Amazing then that Hawthorn went on to copy North to secure its 80s and 90s flags by relentlessly recruiting interstate with the likes of Platten, Dunstall, Hall, Allan etc.
