GARRY HOCKING has gone back to the future and will step away from duties coaching Port Adelaide's SANFL team - the Magpies - to rejoin the Power's coaching ranks from 2016. Hocking took on the role of Port Adelaide's SANFL senior coach at the end of 2013 when the club's football program was streamlined to allow its AFL-listed players to all play for the Magpies in the state league.

Previously AFL players were distributed among the nine SANFL clubs. He rejoins the club's AFL coaching group having maintained roles as a development and forward line coach for the Power up to the end of the 2013 season. He was Port Adelaide's AFL caretaker coach for four games in 2012 following the resignation of Matthew Primus.

Hocking has been an amazing servant of the club. Rightfully deserves some kudos, has done absolutely everything we've asked of him with no fuss at all. Taking over the team after Primus left was a big ask in itself, then to step back to the Magpies and do a job there. Can't speak highly enough of him.

That's when my respect for him went to another level! Then Happy to step back when Ken came in, and has continued to humbly serve the club in whatever capacity required. He, along with Rhode, continued to be rocks for our players to cling to as this club began falling apart at the seams! I hope He gets all the accolades he deserves!

When Toots was working as a volunteer at the club he spoke highly of how Hocking would happily sit down with that group and chat, really including them in the club cocoon.

Just a really good football club person.

Worsfold?

He's going to be fielding some pretty enviable offers from Essendon and most likely Adelaide too.

Would be surprised if we have the budget for bringing a premium candidate like him in for a role that isn't at least 2IC.

He's the new Rohde.

So true. He needs to be rewarded and should be an integral member of the AFL coaching staff.

Every time Ive met him he has been willing to chat shit and is always friendly and quite funny. Great bloke.

Buddha did some good work with Chad Cornes in his final year, getting him to stay positive, keep setting an example for the youngsters etc, having not done the right thing as he was fading out at Geelong.

Hocking played 274 games for Geelong, won 4 B&Fs and is in their team of the century. He has been a career assistant at Port with a short stint coaching the Magpies and an even shorter stint as caretaker at the Power. Yet, you get the sense he sees himself as much a Port Adelaide person as a Geelong person. It's magnificent.

I actually used to be a regular down at the port club before I moved a bit further away. A number of years ago when hocking first came on board, the port club manager and I were having a chat about the coaches. She said that day 1 of hocking made it clear that he was very different to the other coaches in that his voice boomed over the oval, he was demanding and tough and was determined to lift the club out of the mire. From day one he had nothing but the club and fans interest at heart and she highlighted that in comparison to Primus, he was a real hard edge. It's no surprise that he has stuck around. Loyal and hard working as they come.

<3 the budd budd.

If Buddha wasnt at Port Ken might not have taken the job. Buddha told Ken straight that the list had enough talent but their were problems around the club.

Yeah Toots and I spoke about it a bit during the footy season he volunteered. I then saw Buddha at a couple of club functions post season and what he said and did - reinforced what Toots had told me.

BrockBlitz has a few good Buddha stories from his time doing his work experience in the fitness department at Alberton.
