Maybe with Hocking coming back to the AFL then Nicks could coach the Magpies (as Nicks has got his cert 4 in coaching and he did take a couple of games pre season).
Then Bassett could take over our defence ....

I'd personally like to see Bassett working with our midfield. Get the structures and systems right in there both defensively and offensively and everything flows on from there.

Bassett would be an amazing get IMO. He was the first to introduce a defensive style game plan in the SANFL (similar to a Roo's or Lyon) which took a floundering Norwood side who had not finished any higher than 6th in almost a decade to the new powerhouse of the comp.

From 2010-13 he played off in 3 GF's for 2 flags at a winning percentage of 74%, yet the most interesting stat I have come across is that since the implementation of the new structure at Norwood in 2010 we have played each other 16 times and from those 16 encounters we have won twice. That is both a blight on how we at Port play our brand of football and a massive endorsement for they way Bassett has set up a successful culture that wins.

Now I'm not saying this is directly transferable to our AFL side (if we were to get him) but the style of run and gun, direct footy we have come to be known for has always struggled/ fallen down against lock-down tactics of which Bassett is a master. It would be immensely beneficial to have his tactical nous around the club to find ways to penetrate a game-plan he has already perfected, albeit at a lower level. It would solve our missing link so to speak in regards to being able to play through full defensive pressure, which when it breaks (and it will) we flick the switch to all out attack mode and become the devastating force we all hope to be.

At which point we go find our Dew or Dew type.

I just don't like hiring someone and virtually guaranteeing them a promotion (or backing ourselves into a corner where we have to promote or break our word)

What if the players hate him. What if he he just doesn't fit. What if anther assistant at port or another standout elsewhere pops up in those 3 years?

Just have your coach and when you need a new one then hunt him down.
If that's the case you can always back out. If you hire someone from outside then you just have to take that hit.

Nah, our RESERVES are 2/16, our first team would destroy them every time.

I would actually love voss to coach the sanfl side. I don't think he would mind either. He never had the chance to coach at local level like most experienced coaches have. In essence he is an inexperienced coach. People like ken have had a very long coaching pedigree from lower levels to the elite. You need to start somewhere.

Carr can either move on or do the same as voss. Sick of picking up coaches with no coaching experience aside from onfield leadership roles.

Voss had some time in a poorly resourced brisbane, but was largely thrown to the wolves with no experience. Hird is the same, and it shows.

Never gift full time coaching roles without proper experience. This is why the AFL have moved to place educational requirements on prospective coaches just finishing their playing career.

He came to be the midfield manager/coach. This would essentially be a demotion. I dont think we could do t his under the terms of the contract to be honest.

If he agreed to it, there would be nothing stopping it. I suspect he would be open to the idea. He stated he wanted to learn as much as he could when he came over. He needs to develop as a coach and imo - he won't get another senior gig without success at a lower level. Most of the good coaches have done this.

Dont disagree with you mate, but I dont think he will agree to it.

Still remember Bassett going on how we are not one club etc doesn't deserve to be at our great club IMO .
Not without interest, but if we (or any club) reels from every little sledge over the journey it really narrows the pool of available talent. He's anti-Port in his DNA so the corollary is we must really, really think he is the goods to offer him the job.

Not surprising, it would be negligent of us not to have some changes.

Carlton have won 3 games for the season and Brisbane have won 2 games - any team that manages to lose to both 17th and 18th who have a combined win tally of 5, needs a serious kick up the coaching butt.

Clearly love the idea of Bassett coming back, largely for the reasons malcheski lists. From last week's game it was blindingly obvious that our defensive running and midfield structures still need a lot of work.

So considering his strengths, why is he the Essendon forward coach and how has he fared there? Clearly this year's been a write off for them, although looking over Mark Thompson's shoulder for a couple years can't have hurt.

This might be a little left field and off topic but what about trying to entice Dew to come home, to coach the Magpies on a 3 year deal and to be moved on to the AFL side as Ken's successor.
His missus works for Ch7 news - think she is the weather presenter at 6pm. Would only come back if Kochie got her a decent gig at 7 Adelaide.

Lets assume most of what Rucci wrote is correct and my preferred option of finding a 200+gamer who has played most of his career as an AFL forward doesnt happen. Then I would like the following

Basset > defence coach
Buddha > to the midfield
Nicks > forwards coach and teach our forwards some defensive tactics
Carr or Voss to coach Magpies
If Edwards doesnt go to Qld then he either goes to the midfield group or does some development stuff or coaches the Magpies.

Oh ok, didn't know that. I was just thinking about our future, I think i should not have expressed that opinion, i have been howled down for it on here. I think i will do more reading and less posting lol. I do enjoy reading your posts, they are well balanced and enlightening.
