I'm guessing you were one of the posters bagging Poulos at the end of last season?

I really don't get why people try and judge these appointments, it's impossible to measure their success outside of on field results and the size of the injury list.

The Hawks had a massive injury list last year, is their fitness coach shit? Who the **** knows, seriously.
Our fitness in 2014 was crap, but Sando also wanted us to get bigger and bigger. Poulos was much maligned though.

This year it's been excellent. Not only the lack of injuries but we have had no problem running out games. What more do you want from your fitness coach?

Based on that why wouldn't we judge the appointment? The guy has basically been demoted for someone less qualified.

How about you actually think for yourself for once?

Any comments on 9 of the 13 Sydney coaches being former players?
I actually dont give a stuff that hes a former player. My concern is that his appointment cost us an extremely well credentialed employee. Have you read what Walsh thought of Poulos?

I really don't care that Burton used to play for the Crows. My problem is that the performance he's shown in the role we're now employing him in, hasn't been any better than the guy he's replacing. I'm having a hard time reconciling the fact that Brett Burton was the right person for an expanded head of fitness role at our club, after a lacklustre 5 years at Brisbane. As such I'm now wondering how extensive the search was to find the right person.

We just poached our fitness coach from the club that finished 17th, and a side that at no point in recent times can I remember watching and thinking they were super fit. I find that kind of difficult to get excited about.

Walsh is hardly going to publicly bag him.

I understand people being gun shy about boys club appointments, given the track record of the previous regime. Proof will be in the eating on this one. I'd be more concerned if Burton was retained in the face of a couple of years poor performance. Given our clubs new commitment to elite standards, and given this is the first "questionable" appointment they've made, I'm prepared to wait and see.

Not for the first time you have no idea what you are talking about. Literally none.
It is one of the most advanced, professional sports leagues in the world.

Compared to most semi amateur Olympic athletes training with a coach and getting by a piddling grant from a national body it's chalk n cheese

FWIW the guy that Poulos is replacing got a job in the NBA. If Poulos has aspirations in America/UK/Europe then it's clearly a job that doesn't hamper those aspirations

Yep. Really good post.

I'd feel more relaxed about Burton returning if had spent the last five years at a successful club or a club that has turned around and was on the improve during his time there.

First article about Birdman I guess

Crouch’s fitness will be one of Burton’s immediate priorities after he returned to the club in the newly-created role of general manager of high performance.

The former high-flyer played 177 games for the Crows between 1999 and 2010 and has spent the past five years working as fitness coach of the Brisbane Lions.

“He’s (Crouch) in a rehab phase at the moment and we’re hopeful by the time pre-season starts that he’s back up and going again,” Burton said yesterday.

“Clearly he’s a young player who hasn’t had a lot of training durability over the time he’s been here so once we get him up and going and hopefully get a good pre-season into him he’ll come along in leaps and bounds.

“I don’t think he’s necessarily an aerobic animal so we’ll put a bit of work into his aerobic base and build him up but from all reports he’s a very talented footballer and we just need to get him physically right so he can get out there and do what he loves doing.

“First port of call is to make sure that injury heals up and then we progressively load him up and get him ready for pre-season.”

Burton — who replaces Nick Poulos who has joined Australia’s rugby sevens team for the Rio Olympics — has spent the past few days at West Lakes in meetings and touching base with the players individually.

“You never have holidays from being an AFL footballer, that’s every day with everything you do,” he said.

“From what you eat to what you physically do is your livelihood so he’s (Crouch) mentally away from the environment at the moment but has a rehab plan.

“We’ve always known having your best players on the park is your best opportunity to win games.

“You can be a very good footballer but if you can’t physically get yourself right to get out there, you can’t play.

“There’s a lot of scrutiny in the area but at the same time a lot of support from different mechanisms and programs involved in the physical performance banner, it’s not just strength and conditioning, it’s sports science, recovery, nutrition, monitoring, mind development, there are so many components to it.”

Brett Burton is another Steven Schwert, ie a very good fitness coach. Brett was always going to be in this type of role due to studying when playing. Matthew Bode is another one who I expect will receive a larger role this year. I want to see Pods join our fitness team as well. He is yet another player who saw fitness as his future after football. I am sure there will be other people join the team as well. Nick Poulos during the year was making noises about going back to Rugby as he had been asked. This didn't make the headlines but I read about it somewhere. Might have been a fitness mag while in the Doctor's clinic. Anyway be thankful we have a good team in place. Burgess wasn't all that this year was he? Personally I like seeing ex Crows coming back to the club to take on different roles. Ben Hart would be a great get as the new Defensive coach.

I really hope that my scepticism is misplaced. I agree that there isn't a huge difference between their academic qualifications, although a Masters prob represents an extra year of study at arguably a stronger institution. But there is a lot of difference in their experience. As I said, I really hope that it turns out to be a fine appointment.

academic qualifications aren't that important. they don't indicate intelligence, and they don't indicate learning or expertise. they just indicate time spent at a random institution.

I mean who really cares about someone's D grade degree from a Z rated institution over another's slightly different flavour mediocre degree.

I notice this post was conveniently ignored...

why do you try so hard to agree with the club no matter what. you do know the club holds itself to higher standards than you do. they try to get better, you try to find ways to pretend a cluster**** was a triumph

Correct he is not going to bag him however he didn't have to issue high praise either

Walshy struck me as a pretty authentic bloke and he wouldn't of praised the work of the fitness dept if it was not warranted

I can not believe naivety of some people.

We have a qualified fitness coach who had a great year.
We have a less qualified fitness coach who had a poor year.
The less qualified and less successful fitness coach is a former player and great mates of the main man from the club
The less qualified and less successful fitness coach is promoted above the more qualified and successful fitness coach
The more qualified and successful fitness coach leaves
Nothing to see hereo_O
A lot of people thought Danger really hadn't made up his mind. It's a thing.

I agree. When it is in conjunction with 20 years of experience in the field it becomes more compelling though.

If you think about it we probably want to make the crows a real club environment past players there can only help as long as they can do a good job. It's also a good idea to get fresh ideas by bringing in people from outside to.

It's easier for others to see the club in a negative light. To see it doing something positive would mean they are not analysing things correctly.

Do we know for sure Poulos didn't get his new job first, and that Burton is only coming in due to a vacancy ?

Apols if this has been covered already ..

absolutely.

But then we're back to looking at people's experience & background

What I would like to know is about anyone's commitment to their own professional development. The knowledge gained at university is not much use in 5 - 10 years time unless it is supplemented by a professional development within the field, especially in a scientific domain where new techniques and methods emerge frequently. This is the difference between Phil Walsh and some of the other more mature age coaches. He kept up to the minute with his field, so that he didn't fall for 'this is how we've always done it and it served us well in the past.

As I said earlier, I hope it turns out to be a good appointment over time.

At the end of the day none of us were privy to the selection process or present at the interview (if there was one). We are outsiders looking in and judging the appointment on rumours and past achievements. I admit I don't understand how all this transpired but I am willing to wait and see how the team performs next year before I pass judgement. If the team run out games well and have few soft tissue injuries I will be happy.
