Roast Coaching discussion thread

The thread title is obviously over the top but the thread discussion itself hasn't been too bad IMO.

We have significantly improved in some areas this year and Roos is a big part of that. Equally we've played some damn ugly footy as well and noticeably we were really getting flamed off the field prior to a lot of our better efforts this year. Most notably leading up to the Collingwood game.

What we've seen the last two weeks is all the supporters are asking for. Today was a pretty decent effort apart from the first quarter. I'm happy to put my hand up to say I've been one of those critical of Roos. It hasn't been from the perspective that he can't coach (because that is obviously an embarrassing notion) it has been more from the perspective of how he has got us to play in a lot of the games. That is where I think a lot of the frustration has stemmed.

We clearly play a bolder, freer and fasting moving brand of footy when we have our backs to the wall.

Agreed, and I'm not against Roos criticism at all. But I also want to give him credit when due, something which I think is lacking. Too many over-the-top vitriolic rants for my liking.

I don't think anybody seriously doesn't believe Roos has been good overall for us, but I do think some people aren't appreciative enough of his gameday output when we play alright (as opposed to the amount of negativity when we don't).

Anyway, time for bed.

Fair enough too. His impact has been profound. Recruiting, culture, our on field resolve and defensive learning etc.

What I think he has done quite well (and I think the media has underappreciated this) is handle the losses and those types of losses yet keep himself and the playing group focussed and positive. It sounds silly but a lot of successful premiership coaches would not be equipped to take that fall (for lack of a better term). Whilst I haven't always agreed with his on field priorities he hasnt been fased by the losses or pressure.

At 9:24pm?

Are you:
a) 12 years old and looking forward to climbing under your Melbourne FC doona cover
b) 22 and finally going to bed after being out since Saturday afternoon, or
c) 72 and too tired from shaking your fist at the sky

Haha. 9pm is usually my bedtime. Read a book for an hour then go to sleep. Works for me :thumbsu:
(I'm mid twenties btw)

This is one of my least favourite threads on the board yet it remains my mission to keep it in people's minds -- mainly because I want people to realise it's a dumb thread that only gets bumped when we need a scapegoat.

At quarter time we looked completely cooked, yet for the next two and a half quarters came out and gave it a real crack. Surely a lot of this is due to Roos' coaching? In the first quarter we weren't tackling well, and were flat footed and didn't break lines. We came out and started going up the guts, and backed ourselves and ran it forward in waves. Plus our pressure and tackling was so much better. I'd say we lost the game in the end because we purely don't have the polish or fitness that North have.

Now I know we didn't win the game, but I'd love to see some more opinions from the Anti-Roos Crew on why and how we managed to turn it around in the middle period of the game without his influence.
The law of averages would say that we couldn't do worse than we did in the first quarter. It was 11 shots at goal to 2 at one stage in the first quarter. Basically we were getting ****ing smashed. Maybe Roos pulled a brilliant tactical move out at quarter time but I didn't notice it. I think more likely it just provided a chance to reinforce the game plan to the players and a chance for the players to reset.
I don't have it in for Roos, I think he's been great for us. He's been really level headed and maintained his composure which would be next to impossible with the MFC. He's also clearly got the confidence of the playing group as he's a Premiership coach. That said, he's human and I think he has had some bad patches. As has been pointed out on this thread, some of his selections have been odd, use of the sub has been whacky all year, and the coaching against St Kilda was shit. We played no forward line for most of the last quarter but then decided to retain six forwards at the death when we finally hit the lead. And while Roos has obviously been good for us, so has our new recruiting manager. He might have had as much an impact on our future as Roos will have over his three years with us.
All that said, get Goodwin in now :-)

I've avoided this thread until now out of fear that it's just a "pro-Roos" vs "anti-Roos" rantfest. But it's a great thread, with, for the most part, posters trying to think through why we've been so up & down.

Roos undoubtedly has many strengths. He's above all a club-builder and a team builder second to none. He's great at getting the most out of his players as individuals - many on our list have given career-best performances at various times this year, though the trouble has been doing it consistently.

His game style relies heavily on structures - "getting the structures right". When we've had our structures right this season, we've done really well, and in some games we've smashed it. When we've done badly, it's usually because our structures have completely fallen apart.

I think where Roos isn't so good is that he doesn't seem to realise that the guy who's coaching against him is often (not always, but often) hell-bent on pulling our structures apart. Norf went in with a strategy to get us where we were vulnerable and pull our structures apart, and it worked brilliantly for them in the 1st quarter. It took us until quarter time to work out what to change, so that in the 2nd & 3rd quarters our structures held, and when they did, we were more than a match for them. For whatever reason, our structures fell apart again in the last quarter and they ran over the top of us.

The good part is that when our structures held, we were more than a match for them. This augurs well for next year. We will be much better at holding our structures together, and we'll beat sides like Norf because their strategies to pull us apart won't work. But we're not there yet, and for the rest of this year, we'll get smashed when our structures fall apart, and do well when they hold together.

As simple as it sounds the game against North was all about the clearances, They smashed us in the first quarter and were able to feed the ball forward
We turned it in the middle of the game and then were able to isolate Dawes and Hogan, then they took over again in the last

Neither coach crowded the stoppages which ment there was alot of scores from them and alot of space to hit a leading forward, very early naughties footy

Spot on nick.

A few basic skill errors that led directly to opposition goals also contributed to our bad start - but you're right, they simply beat us to the footy at contests and stoppages in the first quarter and a bit.

I think the margin doesn't reflect the game. A few goals here and there really hurt. A few gifted goals in the first. Last minute goal before half time. I think there was the garlett dropped mark, which then north rebounded with a goal, so that's a two goal turn around. What roos said on 360 the natural fade out in the last quarter. So these little things do add up.

Do you Read Like A Demon?

Not sure if the club is still pursuing the initiative, but I remember when the Dees were running their "Don't drive like a demon" campaign, whilst at the same time telling kids to "Read like a demon". From this I guess we can glean that Demons are excellent readers but are not sufficiently capable behind the wheel of a car.

Ok we can put the 'get Goodwin in now' back on the thread title.
It will offend too many posters who took it a little too seriously so it won't happen.

Back on topic, Despite 6 wins, possibly 7 wins, I genuinely think the only reason we shouldn't bring in Goodwin next year is if he personally feels he isn't ready.

For all the good things Roos has done I'm over him. He has over complicated what should be a very simple task of teaching footy.

Luke Beverage is no Einstien when you hear him talk but he has footy nous and keeps it simple. He isn't trying to be a messiah or pick up an entire club, he's just teaching them how to play logical, attacking football.

Roos will coach next year and unless Goodwin has more say it will be painful.
