Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres was recently interviewed for a mentoring role at the Brisbane Lions and could be on the move.

However, North Ballarat premiership coach Gerard FitzGerald has rejected a swag of offers at AFL level to remain in a semi development role at North Melbourne while coaching the Roosters, who have lost premiership stars Stevie Dinnell and Dan Feery who have plans to travel overseas.

MARK Williams and Dean Laidley are out of the race to be James Hird's right-hand man at Essendon, meaning it's Mark Thompson or bust.

The Bombers have given Thompson unlimited time to decide about the senior assistant coaching role and if that means he says yes in the middle of next year, so be it.

Agreed assistant would be perfect - We all love the wiggler it was a real pity he couldn't quite crack it at the top level.

Personally if I wasn't the world's most gifted player, but I had my name on a locker at CFC having played over 100 games there and been part of their leadership group, I'd think I had cracked it.
