Thought we lacked coaching sophistication in 2010. We lost several games tactically. Not sure if this can be addressed with an assistant coach shuffle. What we really need to do is get a good tactician like Laidley on board, but that seems unlikely.

Look, I don't necessarily agree with the Barker appointment (if it is true), but are you serious?

What on earth does the ability of a player on the field have to do with their ability off it as a coach?

There are many great players that turned out to be terrible coaches, and many average or below average players that have made fantastic coaches.

To say that Barker won't be a good coach for Carlton due to his past history as a coach (ie. St Kilda and Hawthorn) may be a fair statement. But to say that he was an average player and thus can't be of any value as a coach is complete and utter nonsense.

Not only this, but you also advocate for the club getting Aker and Whitnall as coaches. Are you sure you are OK? :eek:

I must admit I wasn't all that excited about Barker's appointment. But then I thought blaming him for Hawthorn's poor peformances on the forward line in 2009-10 is not logical and a bit convenient. The Hawks had problems all over the ground at different stages - no rucks, poor defence, injuries, suspensions etc.

Barker may be an average forwards coach, who knows. But to blame him for the Hawks pathetic efforts in 2009 and 2010 (relative to the great year they had in 2008) is ignoring the above problems, letting all the other assistant coaches off the hook and importantly overlooking the deficiencies of their Head Coach.

Wtf was Clarko doing while Barker was assisting him coach the forwards - asleep or putting his feet up? Hardly. Clarko is a head strong character with his own ideas and ways of doing things. Maybe Clarko and Barker clashed and didn't get along.

At the end of the day you can't have specialist coaches (backs, mids or fwds) doing their own thing. Ultimately they are under the direction of the Head Coach to implement a game plan. If part of the Hawks poor performance over the last 2 years is due to poor coaching, then it is more than likely the performance of the Head Coach is a bigger factor and influence than an assistant coach's performance, imo.

FYI, he was Saints forwards coach in 2008 and their forward line never looked worse!! He got sacked and in 2009 they improve out of sight!

It's no coincidence, Buddy & Roughy kicked 200 goals between them in 2008, Barker comes in 2009 and they can barely kick over 100 goals between them in 09 & 10.

All I can say is...good luck!! :thumbsu:

If the Hawks believed he was responsible for a dysfunctional forward line at the Saints (and then Hawks), they never would have hired him, or kept him on after the first year.

Similarly, if the Blues believed he was responsible for the above, they wouldn't bring him on board.

It's not as simple as you, or others have made it out to be. It's not as though we are not aware of the above - if he joins us, then there is a reason, and we clearly believe he can help improve our forward line.

Some decisions are hard to understand from the outside, when we are only privy to such basic info as what you've posted. Fortunately the club is professional, has a greater knowledge of info about him than supporters, and know whether he can aid us in our specific needs, plans, and goals for next year.

I'll trust the club, over supporters looking for a scapegoat for their own shortcomings.
 
If we do get barker and all our leading, delivery and marking is up the boundry and there abouts like when he was at the Hawks and Saints I'll be wanting him out. If it happens and things look good then that's great.
 
i called SEN earlier today and asked Greg Swann about the assistant coaches positions at Carlton and he said that No Appointments have been made at this stage. He also said the club hope to make a announcement next week at some stage.

I would like the following;

Tactically & Ratten mentor - Dean Laidley is a MUST. Chocco would be handy as well.
Forward Line Coach - Warren Tredrea/Brad Johnson/Mark Ricciutio
Backline Coach - Nathan Bassett /Justin Leppitch / Chris Scott
Midfield Coach - Ben Cousins/ Brett Kirk / Peter Sumich / Scott West

What are your thoughts?

The two highlighted would be great acquisitions , Scott in particular. As for the fwds, I would keep looking.

Good luck to Teague in WA..sure he will do well.

I would like a recently retired player now to compliment our new coaching panel, I think it would just balance it out....not Collingwood tho' ;) ..
We're heading in the right direction folks..

Has not. It was reported on one website (that I'd never heard of), and after it was posted there Swann said on SEN he had not been signed. Since then there has been nothing in relation to Barker, while our 2 signings have been reported everywhere.
