His 2 year stint at Hawthorn doesn't sound all that great. This Barker guy sounds crap.
Fingers crossed he aint.
After two years at St. Kilda, Barker was offered a coaching role at Hawthorn and jumped at the chance to return to club he called home for nine years as a player. Barker Will now take charge of the most dangerous forward line in the AFL which includes Jarryd Roughead, Cyril Rioli and Lance Franklin.

After Hawthorn won the premiership in 2008, Barker was part of a coaching panel that has seen the Hawks finish 9th and 7th. Mind you to be fair he only had Franklin, Rioli and Roughead to work with.![]()

The Blues have moved to bolster their depleted coaching staff as well with the appointment of former Hawthorn forward John Barker as an assistant to senior coach Brett Ratten.
Barker, 35, spent just two seasons at Hawthorn as forwards coach after 2007-08 at St Kilda under Ross Lyon.
Barker is the first coaching replacement since the Blues sacked former Port Adelaide and Western Bulldogs utility Brett Montgomery and former Carlton star forward Matthew Lappin almost after bowing out of this year’s finals with a narrow first week loss to Sydney.

Why the hell did we get Barker????
He did SFA at Hawthorn except make them go backwards in the area he coached for the whole time he was there. FFS
Yep pretty much sums it up all in that thread. These are his own supporters with these opinions as well, not the general BF troll fest.
Why are we becoming a dumping ground for peanuts??
Whats next..... we offer Rooke and Milburn 5yr deals???? FFS.

Add the Saints to that as well Chism.
They were crap when he was there & have come good since he left & went to the Hawks.
NOT HAPPY JAN![]()

This is a real concern ! Surely there must be someone else we could turn to, even a very recently retired forward for example. Man, I am am really worried about this appointment ! At this stage I think we should've stuck with lappin.

Agree.
I dont like to dwell on negatives and i try to be a glass half full type person but **** me i am struggling to find 1 positive with the regards to the appointment of this bloke as our new forward line coach.
If anyone has a case for Barker i would love to hear it.
Not the silliest stand alone notion we'll get here this week.![]()

Come on guys, do you really think Carlton would hire a dud assistant coach? If he was so "bad" we and every other AFL club would have stayed right away from him...
Look at that Hawthorn thread...it was started because they lost an important game and were looking to blame someone else other than the players.
If this was the case, why has no other news source come out with it?
Not even on the CFC website, so actually doubt it has happened....

I'm all for keeping the assistant coaching panel fresh. But I've got very little faith in Barker. He ticks stuff all boxes, was an average player, made talented forward lines dysfunctional and was part of an era when Hawthorn were a rabble. He has not been coaching at a club that has succeeded. He has not managed to get the best out of players.
Why have we not chased many of the recently retired players and perhaps players like Peter Dean and SOS who have been at other clubs and having great success and are rated. What about Williams and Laidley?
WHY NOT WAIT FOR THE GF TO BE PLAYED SO WE CAN PINCH COACHES FROM SUCCESSFUL CLUBS ESPECIALLY SEEING COLLINGWOOD MIGHT BE MAKING CHANGES. This is the stupidest part of it all. Come on Carlton FFS.
