Ratten seem to be doing a decent job but he has some obvious defieciencies. The one that most see is a game day tactician he can be found wanting, the second is is we do not really have a unique overall "brand" of footy. We kind of copy a BIT of Geelong when then try other bits without looking like we can string a number of wins in a row. I think appointing Laidley as director of coaching in charge of overall planning to help change and stick to a game plan hopelfully along the lines of Collingwood and Stkilda and to help in the box on match day would be the perfect foil for Ratten. Ratten has good communication skills and does look like someone who could share responsibilities well. The two of them can plan what needs to be done and ratts can implement it. Then keep Ratten on the bench on match days and have Laidley up in the box. I think this will help everyone get behind Ratten as his deficiecies will be addressed. We can hopefully thus stop specualtion on his position and get on with having a tilt at a flag in the next few years. Surely this is better than dumping him at the end of the year and starting with a new coach even if that coach is a Roos or a Malthouse.

I've enjoyed how he coached from the boundary and some of tactical moves Ratts has made towards the end of the season, seems to growing as a coach and knows what we lack (composure when under attack, midfield defensive pressure, protection of Judd) and is slowly chipping away at these deficiencies.

Here's hoping the new coaches can add something new to what's already in the works :)

This Barker guy sounds crap.

Fingers crossed he aint.
His 2 year stint at Hawthorn doesn't sound all that great.

After two years at St. Kilda, Barker was offered a coaching role at Hawthorn and jumped at the chance to return to club he called home for nine years as a player. Barker Will now take charge of the most dangerous forward line in the AFL which includes Jarryd Roughead, Cyril Rioli and Lance Franklin.

After Hawthorn won the premiership in 2008, Barker was part of a coaching panel that has seen the Hawks finish 9th and 7th. Mind you to be fair he only had Franklin, Rioli and Roughead to work with.

Why the hell did we get Barker????

He did SFA at Hawthorn except make them go backwards in the area he coached for the whole time he was there. FFS

Yep pretty much sums it up all in that thread. These are his own supporters with these opinions as well, not the general BF troll fest.

Why are we becoming a dumping ground for peanuts??

Whats next..... we offer Rooke and Milburn 5yr deals???? FFS.

Not giving me any deal of confidence.

Far from it in fact.

The Blues have moved to bolster their depleted coaching staff as well with the appointment of former Hawthorn forward John Barker as an assistant to senior coach Brett Ratten.

Barker, 35, spent just two seasons at Hawthorn as forwards coach after 2007-08 at St Kilda under Ross Lyon.

Barker is the first coaching replacement since the Blues sacked former Port Adelaide and Western Bulldogs utility Brett Montgomery and former Carlton star forward Matthew Lappin almost after bowing out of this year’s finals with a narrow first week loss to Sydney.

Agree.

I dont like to dwell on negatives and i try to be a glass half full type person but **** me i am struggling to find 1 positive with the regards to the appointment of this bloke as our new forward line coach. :o

If anyone has a case for Barker i would love to hear it. I was honestly in shock when i heard this news and WTF is the club thinking??? He has been given the arse after 2 years at the last 2 clubs he was at for under performing in the area that he was in control of which just happens to be our most unstable with a new structure and focal point up forward and i cant see this ending well. :(

How about this guy has knowledge of hawthorn and stkilda's structures and zones and he will help bring that to our team?

In case you and the other ratten apologists (hi thegeneral) hadnt picked it up yet, Rattens famous 'just take the game on' gameplan will not deliver a premiership. As was obvious in 2008, the future of football tactics is in implementing a strong structure, where each player has a position/ a role on the field. Ratten is 3 years too late, but after seeing that of the last 4 grand final sides, 3 of them play to a structure a light bulb might have finally turned on.

Simply asking our mids to run and gut run and run and take the game on and run around like headless chooks will not win a premiership. Our midfield has had no direction under ratten. in some games this year players had no idea about movement and spread etc...

have a look what max hudgeton has brought to the pies this year. knowledge of the saints sturcture. guess what style the pies are playing. oh and thier young players actually look fantastic under the new style.

i have nfi if barker will be good enough, but recruiting coaches with knowledge of how the best play is a good idea.

Not the silliest stand alone notion we'll get here this week. :thumbsu:

True Harks, let;s just see, I;m going to reserve my judgement...don;t want to go barking up the wrong tree...oops sorry:p

Come on guys, do you really think Carlton would hire a dud assistant coach? If he was so "bad" we and every other AFL club would have stayed right away from him...

Look at that Hawthorn thread...it was started because they lost an important game and were looking to blame someone else other than the players.

True, you can;t blame a finals loss on an assistant coach, could be clarksons game plan overall was disjointed, the delivery into the forwards does help...........let;s give the guy a chance before burning him I say

If this was the case, why has no other news source come out with it?

Not even on the CFC website, so actually doubt it has happened....

Yep because Carlton have never made a bad decision in our history

I'm all for keeping the assistant coaching panel fresh. But I've got very little faith in Barker. He ticks stuff all boxes, was an average player, made talented forward lines dysfunctional and was part of an era when Hawthorn were a rabble. He has not been coaching at a club that has succeeded. He has not managed to get the best out of players.
Why have we not chased many of the recently retired players and perhaps players like Peter Dean and SOS who have been at other clubs and having great success and are rated. What about Williams and Laidley?

WHY NOT WAIT FOR THE GF TO BE PLAYED SO WE CAN PINCH COACHES FROM SUCCESSFUL CLUBS ESPECIALLY SEEING COLLINGWOOD MIGHT BE MAKING CHANGES. This is the stupidest part of it all. Come on Carlton FFS.

A smokescreen you think? Or as Travis Cloke put it:

"Adelaide are a pretty straight to front team they don't play any smoke and

shadow behind the window"
