Why does Matthew Knights think he can turn the Bombers around within 3 years and Terry Wallace thinks it will take him at least 5 years?

Because Wallace knows he doesnt have the established key position players Essendon have. Essendon's demise has been caused by a lack of drive out of the midfield. It appears this has now been addressed and I think you will find that Essendon may have some very encouraging results this year.

There are a couple of reasons I believe.

Firstly Knights had better KP depth than we did when Wallace took over and as such only needs a couple of years to replenish his midfielders (an area where players don't normally take too long to develop). Therefore Knights should have them up and running quicker than Wallace has our young KP's ready to take over from Richo.

Secondly, at the time of Wallaces appointment Richmond were IIRC in the middle of another of their board battles, Wallaces long term appointment may have been done to win over some of those threatening to spill the board. The next 2 seasons will tell if that was the right decision or not.

In case you havent realised he is a rookie coach without the glossiest resume going around...3 yrs was probably consdidered long term in many eyes, often rookie coaches get a 2 year gig...Wallace was an experienced coach taking on a wooden spoon outfit...have a hard time selling anyone the gig to turn around the rubbish heap left by spud anytime soon...

Because Knights has taken over from Kevin Sheedy , some would call him the best coach ever. Wallace had to take over a list from Danny Frawley, many would call him the worst Coach ever, which is a true but a hard call considering names like Grant Thomas , Chris Connolly and Mark Harvey ,
