Very, Very cool ...............….new coaching staff looks great except for Prescott in the forward line
I really rate Prescott. made 3 WAFL grandfinals in 4 years in the mid 2000s with a team that was OK but not that good as a senior coach. pretty sure he coached the WA team during at least some of that time too.
Also assisted at Essendon? before coming to Gold Coast

was underrated as a player. probably underrated as a coach, have to be doing something right to stay employed as a coach for 15 years...

very, very nice guy, good player but I don't think he adds much as a coach

You would have to think that bringing on Swallow is a little bit of a thank you to David. He's had ample opportunity to leave but stayed loyal. If Andrew show's half as much as leadership as his little brother then it will be a good pickup.

I’m wondering if he’s been brought in to help Dave with the captaincy

I must say this looks a pretty good group to surround a rebuilding list with.

2019 GC SUNS Coaching Group

  • Senior Coach – Stuart Dew
  • Senior Assistant Coach – Dean Solomon
  • Forwards Coach – Ashley Prescott
  • Defensive Coach – Josh Drummond
  • Head of Development & Integration/Midfield Coach – Josh Francou
  • Development Coach/ NEAFL Senior Coach – Nick Malceski
  • Development Coach – Tate Kaesler
  • Development Coach – Tim Clarke
  • Specialist Coach – Andrew Swallow

This is all good but did we upgrade our team doctors? Our injuries have been killer.

Barry Rigby is our match day doctor
ED specialist, also a fellow of college of GP's
Impressive CV type character.
Not sure if he does during the week stuff
He is not a sports medicine physician though.

This would be fine for match day but I would hope we would have someone additional doing during the week chronic injuries, injury prevention etc.. etc..

Probably only be forced out if he does elite things like some of the players who have been cut Eg Lyons
No more for me!!!
I have not missed a single Suns game either live or televised since our inception
I promise you I never saw J Lyons do anything remotely close to elite in his time at the Club
B grade with B+ potential

Id like to know who if any A grades the Suns have?

Starting from the back, Rory Thompson is an A Grade Key Defender. Jonathan Brown rates him highly, which is more than enough for me. Jarrod Harbrow won our B&F ahead of Swallow, so he's on the same level. Jack Martin received the most votes per game in the B&F. Jarrod Witts has moved up to 8th on the afl.com.au Ruck rankings.

Touk Miller was consistently in the best every week and has been really impressive through his first 4 seasons. Peter Wright had an injury-interrupted year where the coaches wanted to have a look at his ruckwork in the NEAFL before they played him - his game against Sydney was game changing with 9 marks around the ground that showed he's more than just a forward 50 threat. Lachie Weller improved with every game and showed his class.

You can't do a list like this without including potential A graders who have a lot of improvement left in them. Brayden Fiorini, Ben Ainsworth, Will Brodie, Jack Bowes, Charlie Ballard and Brayden Crossley have all show A Grade potential.

Nothing wrong with our B Graders either. There are a few guys that played Finals this season who have just been delisted. The guys who survived the cull on our list have shown Dew something and I'm still inclined to trust him.

Stewie has certainly left his mark after this trade period. Every single player who has reportedly had issues with him or the game plan has been chopped. A line in the sand i doubt many players would be willing to cross now.

My 2cents on the current level of play - as in 2018. Might differ to others.

Really comes down to classification. What you call an a grader.

A grader = AA squad level player - top 10% in position
B grader = good players but step below - next 25%
C grader = reasonable - next 30%
D grader = below average - likely not getting games in good teams (next 25%)
E grader = generally negative on field value. (Last 10%).

Just how I would classify it.

By this metric we honestly don’t have any current A graders.

We certainly have guys who may turn into A graders if they meet their potential.

My A graders in the midfield league wide (off the top of my head) are
- Beams, Parker, Kennedy, Sidebottom, Martin, Pendlebury, Cripps, Merrett, Mitchell, macrae, bontempelli, Sloane, gaff, Fyfe, Selwood, Duncan, Dangerfield, Neale, yeo, coniglio, Higgins, kelly etc..

For me swallow is a clear step below - b grader in my book - Along with the wines, ebert, ross, hill, shiels, Prestia type group.

Thompson I would say is our closest to my definition of an A grader.

B graders
- Thompson, witts, Martin, swallow, weller, harbrow.. think that’s probably it but may have forgotten someone.

C graders
Touk, sexton, Wright, fiorini, Brodie, Wright etc..

D graders
Leslie, Holman, young etc..

E
Lemmens, schoenfeld, heron etc.

I think this is spot on. You can also relate the number of A graders to ladder position. There is no way a team could have 7 A graders and be second last. We have a few that have potential but that's it. Lynch and Ablett were probably our only other A graders. Maybe O'Meara and for small periods May.

If Swallow is a A grader..
Lyons was A+ excelled in almost every stat compared to Swallow.

Could find another 100 players in the comp who match swallows stats.

You’ve just got your foundation Suns member goggles on.

i'm sorry Ben, but stats off some websites homepage does NOT define who is an A grade player and who isn't.

Lyons had the opportunity to advise the Match committee at his exit interview that he wouldn't re-sign at the end of 2019. He chose not to, and the Suns then continued planning around his being here. He then advises them AFTER the trade period is over, that he has an offer for more game time and wants to go.......
And the Suns oblige him.......

Swallow is worth 10 of him at the Suns, and I don't care which stats you want to post........in my mind Swallow is A + and Lyons, whilst I think he is a good footballer.....hasn't earned the right to polish Spitta's boots.

Disclaimer: I still have Lyons in my Keeper league. ;)

Not sure someones personality or lack of morals gave to do with pure football abilty.

But it was a good speech and you have my vote

Speech has nothing to do with it.......and i'd take Swallow over Lyons at the Suns every day of the week, and I'm talking football ability now.

Bear in mind I rate Lyons, but Swallow is 10 times a better fit for The Suns than Lyons was....and I'm still of the opinion that stats aren't the be all and end all..
As we're talking rating here, and as far as the Suns are concerned, if Swallow is rated A + then Lyons at the Suns is B......but at the Lions he may be an A.......that's for them to decide.
I appreciate your opinion, I just beg to differ

there is also a narrative at the club that Lyons was the opposite of Barlow in he never gave of himself to the club or the other players, more of a show up do your thing and leave type guy which made it easier for them to move him on, I thought he was a key player for us until Dew and he crossed swords, yes he hacks it on the boot as soon as he gets the pill but at least it was going towards our end and not getting spread on the outside by the oppo

I remember him seemingly always kicking some clutch goals around stoppages at key times in some matches too

Anyway the guys have been decisive and clinical and their necks are squarely in the noose now to own the outcome, lets back them in and go for the ride
