Apologies if it has been discussed elsewhere, but seriously WTF was Harvs thinking putting 2! spare men in defense. This defensive minded bullshit cost us the game against the Hawks and again yesterday. I honestly don't see the logic in it...

we won, and in general harve's coaching against the swans as well as his planning for their style was nothing short of magnificent. should we have attacked more in the last quarter? yep. but if your going to criticise harves given him credit for the 99% he got right

Yeah definitely, the third was brilliant and the matchups and tactics were great until the last quarter. Maybe its just me then, I think he coaches too negatively at times.

it's definitely an area for improvement. we're probably split 50-50 with how many times we got away with the last quarter fadeout this year. one thing we haven't done is to really smash the opposition when they're down. we've either held them at arm's length or let them catch up. i want a proper smashing dammit!

THIS!

Same banana! I felt Harvs was too negative at the start of the 4th.
Yes we won, and playing that way is indeed a good practice for the boys to watch back on tape and see how to do it better I guess moving forward.

I absolutely agree with the sentiment of the OP.

Harvey and the side got a 6 goal buffer on the back of winning the contest at the coalface.

Whilst we still won, putting two spare men back at the start of the 4th put us behind the 8 ball at the stoppages, it invited a comeback.

By allowing the Swans to have two free men around the ball we were smashed onball, allowed the Swans to generate momentmum and almost pinch the game from us.

Had we kicked a goal early on in the piece it would have been a dagger through the heart.

Loved his work and planning up until 3 qtr time, but I think he lit the fuse to the Swans comeback with an overly negative approach in the last quarter.

One man would have been enough, but two?

Played with fire and almost got us burnt.

**ckin hell we are sitting sixth on the ladder ,beat Sydney,Brisbane and both Adelaides on their own dung heaps despite having had an injury list never seen before in the history of the AFL and your complaining about coaching tactics.
The mind boggles at the lack of nous some show on this board:confused:

While I do agree we should have kept attacking in the last Harvey has to be given credit for getting us as far as he has this year with the worst injury list in the AFL. Mark Duffield wrote a highly complimentary piece on this in todays West "The Game" lift-out.
There is a also a great wrap on Fyfe, apparently Longmire admitted he tried several stoppers on Fyfe and the kid beat them all. Longmire goes on to say that Fyfe has become one of the best players in the game already!

You really are a lightweight, no doubt a person who needs to read the instructions on how to cook two minute noodles.

You boil the water first.

I am happy with the win, it was a sensational achievement but Harvey really dropped the ball and had it not been for some brain farts by the Swans players late in the match we might have been sitting 8 and 7.

That comeback Sydney generated was largely caused by Harveys overly defensive tactics.

To kick that many goals, with the weather the way it was having only kicked 9 in three quarters was not acceptable.

Happy with the win, but I'd suggest even Harvey would admit error in the last. Went too defensive, too early.

We were playing with men behind the stoppages anyway, from the start of the game and getting smashed, but preventing clear run forward from then. The main problems fro mthe game were the fact that it bucketed with rain, making it impossible to maintain possession of the ball and the players started to let it get in their heads.

Rubbish ,why would Harves admit to an error,Freo were low on troops with the injuries to Griff,Johnson,Roger and the kick to Pavs Jatz crackers and thelack of game time in Mcphee and Barlowe
Would be full of praise re the boys efforts and the way they held on.
Sydney were always going to come at us,thats the way they play,Harveys coaching and the boys efforts held them out
Great win over a side above us
Grab a life and recognise the win for what it was, a great acheivement

Two men patrolling the defensive 50 is different to having two sweepers at a stoppage.

Why would he admit error?

Because he is human and that's what humans do, make mistakes.

I'd love to be as simple as you and live in a land of unicorns and rainbows but the players, coaches, support staff will make mistakes.

Absolutely there were injuries, and absolutely we were brave, but the fact of the matter is Harves went too early with his defensive ploys.

It set the ball rolling for a Sydney comeback, it gave them a leg up in the middle and as we all know the dam will eventually break.

We were at breaking point until Kennelly literally farted in his brain and gave away the 50.

i can't even remember the last time we smashed someone properly, by at least 10 goals. if we are putting the handbrake on in the 4th, for once it would be nice for harvs to let them go mental. it would do them the world of good.
