Round 1 on Sunday at Coburg against the Bullants.

The named team as follows

B King Hughes Hartigan
HB Horne Oakley-Nicholls Silvester
C Meyer Neville White
HF Edwards Riewoldt Morgan
F Casserly Foster Jackson
R Graham Shelton Rayson
INT Carnell Collins Dowd Mullins Clingan N.Caruso Robertson F.Caruso

Good to see a large number of Richmond listed players named. First chance to look at Edwards, Riewoldt, Collins and Clingan. Not sure if Connors is injured or if he is playing reserves?

hopefully the kids can get through it ok

hopefully we can have atleast 10 richmond guys playing every week unlike some games last year when it was like spot the richmond player

the talls look pathetic but there is a bit more midfield depth now which is good and the team looks like a really good running side which it better be after the last 2 years of drafting

It is a very young and inexperienced Coburg team this season. A finish outside the bottom-4 would be a huge result for us. We lost by 4 goals to Northern last weekend - and would expect an 8+ goal on Sunday to a much more epxerienced line-up.

I suspect that we will improve as injuries strike at Richmond. We've added some very good under-18 types who probably don't have much AFL potential, but would be more competitive immediately.

It is a bit of an All-Star cast in the 2s amongst the first year guys. Ryan Anderson, Myles Sewell, Fort Caruso, Matt Vasilevski, Chris McErlain, Joe Gazzo are all highly performed midfeilders. Andrew Horne in the seniors, Cathal Corr who is good. Plenty of midfield depth - although young.

yeh the midfield looks half decent atleast now but i doubt we will win many games

no wonder sandy have cleaned up lately you look at their team and they are solid body's all over unlike the other teams who are filled with pencil kids

That's basically the key to winning in the VFL. You want a core of VFL veterans, then you hope that your AFL team plays kids leaving some experienced AFL bodies to play for you.

Sandy have guys like Chad Liddell (30), Nick Sauntner (29), Rod Crowe (23), Ezra Poyas (26), Andy Biddlecombe (24), David Gallagher (26), Chris Lamb (26), Peter Summers (22). That's the core of their team, that's the guys who win them games. If Melbourne don't pick someone like Bizzell, Ferguson, Moloney or Paul Johnson that's just a bonus.

Same story at Werribee, Williamstown, Northern and this year at Port Melbourne.

Peter Summers will never be an AFL player ... Daniel Connors might be ... but THIS YEAR Connors is no match for a guy like Summers or Liddell.

Well Coburg would look better with Hyde, Moore, Schulz, Tambling and Pattison in that team, all who 'should' be playing there until they can show they can have an impact at AFL level!

yeah that makes sense. lets take them out of the AFL where they can prove it, and replace them with other players who havent proved it.

Thats my point, we don't have the depth, so we have these players in there 'trying' to prove it, when they should be in playing in Coburg 'showing' they 'can' more than likely do it. I would naturally prefer they be ripping games up at Coburg regularly before the can try and 'prove it'. But since we don't have the depth, that aint gonna happen is it!

I just looked at the team and see Schulz is in the pocket, so he probably did well enough last week not being the FF, but the pocket.

Any less than 10 'good' possies for Tambling though and he will need a 'motivational' or 'confidence boosting' a whatever, run back at Coburg, and one of the 'haven't proved it' players can have a try IMHO!

Connors was suspended by the club for a couple of matches for an off-field incident.

Are you serious :( can't be good news. Considering when he was drafted many said there were question marks on his attitude and behaviour.

Same about Dean Polo who was plonked in the VFL reserves in his first year and had a tough first season. Let's focus on Connors next year. Our desire for 1st year players to take the world by storm is a reflection of how far behind other teams we actually are.

Im not expecting Connors to set the world on fire at all.

However, you would agree with me if I said it would be much nicer to hear that he is training hard and playing some solid football in the VFL/VFL reserves, rather than being suspended by the club for some off-field incident.

Absolutely. It is a concern. That said I don't think we should be reaching for the red-biro to cross him off just yet.
