Huge amounts of cocaine being intercepted at the border

By Ben Cubby

March 5, 2023

Key points

"About 3.69 tonnes of cocaine was detected by law enforcement agencies in just six months to December.

That’s more than any 12-month period over the last decade and has a potential street value of $1.4 billion.

Amphetamine-type stimulants intercepted in the past six months was also historically high.

Most smuggling and drug seizures took place at the major cargo ports in Sydney and Melbourne.

COCAINE shipments are being seized at the nation’s borders at unprecedented levels as Australia confronts a global surge in trafficking."

I have recently noticed a large increase of cocaine news in the media.
hoping to find some figures to see how true this is:
Please compile articles about Australian Busts and importation stories, news links, films, podcasts etc.

article 2017:

"The amount of cocaine seized in Australia has increased almost six times in the past 10 years, with the majority being sent into the country through the mail.

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission has found 4.6 tonnes of cocaine were seized at the border in 2016 and 2017, up from 3.9 tonnes the year before, and just 664kg a decade ago."

For every ton that gets seized, how many are getting through? A hundred? Or more?

It's a waste of time, money and effort, plus an opportunity missed.

So do a lot of things.

You can't stop it so may as well legalise it.

Number 1 rule of governing is to give people what they want.
The new president might be for it, he wants marijuana...

"It is time to accept that the war on drugs has been a complete failure," Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced during his inauguration festivities earlier this month, commenting on a bill his administration recently presented to legalise recreational marijuana to Congress."

yes some must be getting through but I would guess less than your ratio of 100:1 because border force seem to be good at finding it in the mail also catching the boat drops

"Based on interviews with 774 people with a median age of 24 in Australian capital cities who regularly use illicit drugs, the number reporting cocaine use in the past six months jumped from 68 per cent in 2020 to 80 per cent.

It is the highest percentage since monitoring began in 2003, however frequency of use remains low."

"Alcohol intensifies the effects of cocaine making the drug more toxic, so this is a particularly dangerous combination,’ said Professor Darke."

The question is how much of this 6x seizure rate is due to better seizure rate v increase in cocaine coming to Australia.

I suspect both are true.

lol, coke, really?
Who the hell is actually buying it at $400 plus per gram?
What's the first question your asking ?
q2; don't know about prices, apparently Australia is being targeted because the prices are more profitable than rest of the world

"Australia has become a lucrative target for illicit drugs
This latest drugs interception is one of many attempts by smugglers to bring illegal substances into the country via the WA coast.
Just last month, 365 kilograms of cocaine was found stashed in an overturned boat off the coast of Esperance following the dramatic rescue of three men found clinging to an esky.
Acting deputy police commissioner Tony Longhorn said Australia was an attractive proposition for would-be drug dealers."

“We’re looking at $300,000 to $400,000 for a kilo of cocaine,” he said"

2017: "biggest ever" label

"Australian Federal Police have pulled off the largest cocaine bust in Australia's history, seizing more than $312 million worth of the drug.
A transnational drug syndicate used a yacht to sail to a "mother ship" waiting in international waters before AFP officers seized the record haul of 1.4 tonnes of cocaine".

Cashed up wanna be tradies.
People sniff up out the front of nightclubs in Geelong, it's so common nobody even takes notice anymore.

Probably not cocaine Sqotty, it would be meth.

The cartels might be trying to make inroads here but in my opinion, there probably isn't a lot of cocaine around yet.

The stat's here agree with ice being used most :
"The report found the consumption of nicotine and alcohol far exceeded that of all other substances monitored nationally in the reporting period of August to October 2021.
Of the illicit drugs, meth was the most consumed over the five-year study (8,838kg), followed by cocaine (4,711kg), MDMA (1,231kg) and heroin (984kg).

Regional consumption of methamphetamine, along with alcohol, nicotine, MDMA, oxycodone, fentanyl and cannabis, exceeded capital city consumption per capita.
Michelle Campbell, the clinical services manager for Lives Lived Well in regional NSW, says alcohol use accounts for 35% of services offered, meth 30% and cannabis 15%."
