"Not his best kick" = absolute howler of a kick
"Very promising" = I've never seen him play before
"Lots of upside/potential" = Currently has no talent
"<insert name of player> is lurking/in the vicinity" = We are going to mention this bloke's name all night even if he is not involved in the play

These cliches CAN apply to the scenarios you’re bringing up but they also often don’t.

from our club Hawkins ‘brings the ball to ground’ - he also happens to be among the best marks in the forward 50 of the last 20 years

Mitch Duncan has ‘elite foot skills.’ I don’t think anyone would say he’s soft and just plays outside.

blokes like Mooney and Ling and Selwood have been described as spiritual leaders when they weren’t captains. While ling’s commentary and Selwood’s onfield approach are certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, I’ve not heard a bad word said about them away from footy.

blicavs is an endurance machine. He’s neither breathtakingly fast, or slow as f***. He’s just normal paced for his size.

Every other club would have equivalents as well
Give yourself an uppercut

yeah youve Disproven my point well there
Only you would take a general thread like this and use it as an excuse to blather on about how awesome all the Geelong guys are
Of course, these cliched sayings aren't always code for something else. Thanks for pointing that out.

"Tomahawk brings the ball to ground, but he's also one of the greatest EVA!!!"
"Mitch Duncan has elite foot skills, but he's not soft..."
"Moon Dog and Joely were spiritual leaders, but I never heard anyone say a bad word about them..."
"Blitz is a enduro machine... but he's far from slow..."

Wank wank wank... You're unbelievable.

Way to miss the whole point of the thread.

What they say: "He's a long term project player"
What they mean: "He literally has no idea how to play footy and he can barely kick."

What they say: "We knew they're a great side and it was never going to be easy today"
What they mean: "We were shithouse today, but they're are hopeless side, so we got away with a lucky win."

What they say: "...and as Gary alluded to before..."
What they mean: "...and as Gary just said..."

What they say: "We like to focus only on the things that we can control"
What they mean: "The umpires are campaigners"

What they say: "He's the heart and soul of the club"
What they mean: "He's a hack who should've been delisted years ago, but he comes cheap and chases & tackles, so we kept him around"

What they say: "He needs to focus on his footy"
What they mean: "He needs to get off the piss and stop chasing skanks"

“They’re a quality side and we knew they’d come at us hard” = we don’t rate them so we didn’t try that hard that’s why we didn’t win by much
“Full credit to the boys” = I won the game off my own boot
“I didn’t see it so I can’t comment” = I don’t want to get fined

F*** me Geelong really are rent free in your head aren’t they.

amazing. A poster uses examples from his own club who he knows better than he knows other clubs, to disagree with a postulation.

my point was that all the ‘cliches’ being addressed in the initial point are just as likely to be accurate as they are to be a cliched Embellishment.

BT's code.

"Mark" - Intercept Mark
"Gives it to Stokes" - Gives it to Christensen
"Brilliant by Crisp" - Brilliant by Maynard
"That was out of bounds!" - That wasn't out of bounds
Boy oh boy wow weee!

A player with X-Factor is a player that's frequently shit and rarely brilliant. But is capable of the brilliant.

"They did what they had to do" -- They won, despite playing absolute shit house!

I've noticed they use this every match these days
