In an honest society people tell the truth. In AFL the eyes of thousands of children look to the players as icons and learn from them. The idea of not 'dobbing in' another player comes directly from the criminal world where a 'grass' is a traitor. Is the criminal mentality that which we wish for our children? I think not. If a player does the crime he should do the time. Witnesses should tell their truth openly. Then perhaps the brutal injuries will reduce and plaing ability alone will determine the outcome of games.
Perhaps, too, the police should be involved in incidents such as Knights's and if there are witnesses, players or spectators, who can testify that the attack was not defensive then Libba should be prosecuted for assault and spend a frew weeks in a prison. I wonder if he would be a repeat offender then?

Anyone noticed that the clubs advocating scrapping the code... are those that are not physically intimidating...

leave it on the ground...

this will only lead to more pretty boys playing what once was a mans game...

No. If Dean Wallis gets away with it, good on him, but he won't, if anyone tries to puch/kick/stab/shoot 'His Royal Highness King Carey I' I'm willing to bet 21 royal blue and white players, every North official and every North supporter will be on the field and will kill the little c**t right then and there. You'll probably find Hird, Lloyd, Fletcher and Sheedy lying in a pool of their own blood, shit & piss as well.

GOD lets hope he tries.

and the Northboys will deal with it JubJub... as they always have... no dobbers here... have the pussies agreed to be dobbers or men??? well as close as cross dressers can be...

Keep the code of silence!
To get rid of it would be insane. Imagine players at the tribunal spilling their guts - wheres the honour in that? It would not take long for the tribunal to sink to the lowest common demoninator where players exaggerate incidents to get someoine outed. In fact I believe Schwartz has already started this when he showed his bruise to get Brown nailed.

Of course isolated incidents (lockett v caven, libba v knights) should be and are punished. The players know where to draw the line.

If it aint broke don't fix it!

Just posting to let you know that I spoke about this last week after Collingwood kept quiet about the off the ball felling of Licuria.

I spoke about the fact that I didn't care that G.ay-Lord got off (he would have got two minimum), because it was down to us to testify. I applaud (and so should Hawks fans) the actions taken by the CFC and Scotty Burns. It should be at no stage the players' onus to make complaints/reports, just the same as it is not the players' responsibility to make umpiring decisions!

Anyway this whole thing has been blown out of proportion just cause there was blood. If there were only black eyes, would the pillow-biter Campbell have gone against the code? Leave the umpires, seven and the AFL to make the case.

I always thought that was the best part of Get Smart.

Is it an 'Honour' thing.

If a player gets dobbed in by another one he will be finaed or suspended. Either way he will lose money.

If someone dobbed you in and you got fined you'd not be happy would you ?

It's just professionals protecting their livelyhoods.

Take a look at lawyers. they defend people who they suspect to be criminals, but thir profession expects them to do it.

The football clubs expect players to do this (but prefer them not to be caught) so If they all agree to protect their income, who are we to decry that when we do the same thing in our workplaces.

And another thing. at the end of the year all the fine money is divided up and sent to the clubs. If it went to charity ther'd be some honour in it.

Pessimistic - I can see your point of view, but I disagree with your stating that players won't dob each other in because of money. I reckon they have other motives, the main one being "the code" or their teams honour.

Your idea of giving the fine money to charity is fantastic though. Perhaps some of the money could go to junior footy leagues.

Refusing to tell the truth is honourable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not advocating players making complaints about each other. What I am advocating is that if a player is brought to a tribunal to give evidence that he tells the truth and does not hide the truth. Now that is honorable.

Jubjub,

"Woosha", punched, repeat punched Carey in the stomach, in the opening round 1998 and knocked him to the ground. No report. (Trainers came from everywhere because of the previous year's opening rd when Carey did his shoulder.) I saw it very clearly because I was watching Carey and he went down like a sack of potatoes.

As to whether players should "dob", if there is no video evidence, it becomes one player's word against another.

Who is to say, that the reason given by Libba, is not a true version? Would he have been made a pariah, if Knights had as similar injury but a less blood.
What if he was both players were running and Libba DID put his arm up to protect himself? The situation became highly emotive because of the way it was reported in the printed medium. Libba was already guilty before he went to the tribunal.

In serious cases, Caven etc, both players and their clubs should co-oerate.
