Mark's in the swim

January 06, 2008
MARK Coughlan expects to be ready for Richmond's season opener as he continues to recover from two knee reconstructions.
The Tigers' gun midfielder has not played for 18 months and admits he is starting to feel anxious.
He did a time trial on grass on Friday while his teammates ran the Tan and Saturday he completed the Lorne Pier to Pub 1.2km swim.
"The nerves are starting to come up a bit," Coughlan said. "It will be like playing my first game again.
"Each week is a big step for me and a big step in my confidence. I'm on track to be fully training in a month and I'm hoping to play a pre-season game or two which will then lead into the start of the season.
"Ideally, I'd love to play Round 1, but it's a week by week thing.
"I need to get a few games under my belt. I need to prove myself again.
"I've been out of footy for a while and I'll need a few games to get used to the pace of the game."
Coughlan's enforced break began in Round 12, 2006, when he snapped the anterior cruciate ligament against Hawthorn. Last February he had to have a second operation.
"I will have had 13 months before the start of the season which is more than enough for a knee reconstruction," Coughlan said.
"I'm slowly coming out of all the swimming and bike riding, and cross training-type things and getting more into footy stuff now.
"My preparation has been much better than it would have been coming back last year. I've had a lot of time to get over it."
Coughlan said he couldn't wait to join teammates such as Brett Deledio, Nathan Foley and recruit Trent Cotchin in the midfield group.
The best and fairest winner's return will be welcome news for coach Terry Wallace.
Last year the Tigers were without most of their leaders as Coughlan was joined on the sidelines by Nathan Brown - still recovering from his broken leg - and ruckman Troy Simmonds, who was diagnosed with a blood clot on the lung.
Brown and Simmonds are also back and training well.
But neither was up for the challenge of swimming in yesterday's hot conditions.
Coughlan was joined by Foley, Andrew Raines, Angus Graham, Will Thursfield and Danny Meyer.

I hope Cogs' anxiety is just the sign of a real professional setting the bar high for himself! :thumbsu:

As a sidenote, it was great to see Danny Meyers name listed along Foley, Raines and Thursfield in the Pier to Pub race. At least his attitude cant be questioned at this stage of the year and that it translates onto the field during the season! :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Anxiety can be an prelude to the fact he knows he's far-ked

What is this Pier to Pub race? Is it not compulsory? Or were thursty, cogs, foley and the others listed the ones that did well?
I hope he proves me wrong when i say this but he's never going to be the same, you cant be away from footy that long and come back the same.
Hopefully we'll be seeing him round 1. :thumbsu:

Definately agree with this

isnt it funny. some can play til 35 without a scratch on their bodies, yet some are just lucky enough to be injury-ridden.

i remember early on in cogs career, there was talk he was good enough to be a trade for judd to lure him back to WA- basically a straight swap...there was some small talk over here about it years ago in the media. He was a ball-magnet this kid, would be good to see him regain his form that he had in his earlier years.

I remember seeing old Bigfooty threads rating a young Cogs almost as high as a young Judd, it would be a real shame if he can't come back close to his best.

It's going to be extremely hard for him to get back to his best after two knee recos. I hope he does though. He was on his way to becoming a gun player in the competition before his first one. Good luck to him.

You're forever the pessimist oxx!

Time will tell..

The odds are that he will most likely be a glimpse of his former self.

It is sad to say but i can't imagine him cominbg back as strong as he was before.

Good luck to him though.

Richmond fielded six enntrants into the swim, with Thursty claiming the bragging rights, clocking in with an "impressive" 19 minute swim. The rest are in order of fastest time..

2. Angus Graham
3. Mark Coughlan
4. Nathan Foley
5. Raines
6. Meyer

So we have established that Coughlan can swim 1.3km.

What has this got to do with my post?

It means he will get back to his best, dah! ;)

Yep because swimming 1.3km is comparable to running 13-20km per game over the space of 22 weeks and also having your body smashed time and time again. Not to mention the strain and impact on the legs and knees from all of the twisting and turning and the possibility of suffering some sort of negative contact with the dodgy knee.

I don't know how i could have been so stupid to assume that the rigors of AFL football can't be compared to swimming 1.3km, i just assumed that he would have had plenty of practice in swimming long distances over the last few seasons and that this swim would be simple for him.

Silly me..... ;)

He'll come good. But I wouldn't expect him to be at his best first half. Let him get some games under the belt again and he'll come good

Hot conditions?

Somebody should have told them that the water was actually pretty cool.

They could have done the swim, stayed out of the heat by being wet for 20 minutes, and enjoyed the confidence-boosting phenomenon of completing a pier to pub with a run across the beach without the usual amount of shrinkage. :)
