I was having a look at some old books last night and realised many oppostion captains have crossed to the Roos in search of Premiership Success.

Colbert - Not Yet
Dempsey - never happened
Alves - 1977
Wade - 1975
Rantall - 1975
Davis - 1975

66 percent not a bad ratio, and one is still a chance.

Strange it has never happened the other way.

The only interesting thing about Colbert is how he stays in the senior team after being hopeless week in week out. He stuffs things up more than he does good for the team. But I guess we have a bit of experience in that matter because McKernan stays in the team as well on the off chance he might do something (Which he does do every now and then). Maybe Im being harsh to a player coming back from injury but I reckon Lange is playing far better than Colbert and deserves his spot.
On McKernan, it seems that the only way he can do anything is if he pysch's (??) himself into it (Gritting the teeth etc). He reminds me of a boxer who has been battered and injured but keeps getting up but in Coreys case doesnt want to get injured. He is scared of dislocating a finger whenever he goes for a mark or dislocating his shoulder when he goes into a pack and gets tackled and its pretty obvious to all supporters.
Kanga

Nice bit of research Rooboy..why wouldnt you want to come to North when you are shoe in to play finals every year.
I'm a Lange fan as well..North always look better and have more options when he plays..he deserves his spot..agree with Kanga on Colbert but you always have that feeling
he might turn it on and he does take another good defender away from Carey, and McKernan. It could be Colberts day on Friday..
Melbourne have a few turkeys in the backline
and he might just fire up..here's hoping.

Kanga has come out of his cocoon and is now Royal Blue and White. (Registered at last)

Isnt it strange how all north supporters love Lange. I reckon he will be a great player if given the chance. Remember though Hewitt was great at the start but was never given opportunities and is now in the VFL side.
Barney, Have you seen Colbert do anything yet?

i agree with you, but that doesnt exactly help us now. He doesnt take a really good defender anyway, how many times did he get possessions last week because no-one was even bothering to man him up. About all of them.

RBW..no I am still waiting for Colbert to put a full game together, as Rooboy said he seemed to go ok against Geelong ..thing that irks me is the dumb free kicks he is giving away..we get the ball down forward and he plays from behind and pushes in the back or holds on and turns the ball over..I almost think he should play half back or on a wing
where he might have more freedom.Hewitt has suffered because of Burton..you can only have so many talls..I have the feeling Hewitt may be trade bait for a quick midfielder..there been talk about Stevens brother leaving Port and coming to North.

Go Roos

Now Roo Boys and Girls, lets get some facts straight.

The first few that left their clubs in search of Premierships all came to you under the 10 year rule in the 1970s. The fact is that everyone felt sorry for North in the 1970s because they were the only team without a premiership. These players were the reason for the two premierships in the 1970s. In the 1975 Grand Final, everybody, even some of the opposition supporters were hoping North would win as they were in 1977 to see them deny Collingwood AGAIN!

Colbert is the first captain to leave under his own accord in search of a Premiership. The fact is that if he doesn't believe that Geelong has the makings of a Premiership, why would he bother staying there? He could have been a captain of a finals side this season, instead he wanted to go to North to win a Premiership STRAIGHT AWAY - His choice!

I grant you the fact that you are still more of a chance to win the Premiership than Geelong, but realistically if you win on Friday as the underdog, you will then be up against the might of Essendon a side you last held to a 125 point margin. Realistically you will not win the flag this year, and I don't know about the future of the club both on and off the field in the next few years.

For the future you have players such as Lange, Pickett, Motlop, Bell, Colbert and Grant but the players who have got you this success, Carey, Martyn, Archer, McKernan, Stevens are all nearing the end of their careers. The upcoming group while good, is no-where near the class and quality of the current generation.

As far as Leigh Colbert is concerned, he has no character what-so-ever and is one of the most overated players in the laegue. What happens when you start to struggle and re-build? Will he want to go to a club that is up the top of the ladder again?

It wouldn't surprise me!

I'll be the naysayer here and say that you're all being hard on Colbert. He hasn't set the world on fire, but the thing that impresses me (and this is the opposite of what Kanga was saying) is that Colbert does go in hard in the packs. Since he's come back from injury, he's just thrown himself in left, right, and centre.

He's also coming back from a knee reconstruction and we won't really know how good he is until next season. Every club was after him last season...surely all those coaches and recruiting people can't be wrong.

Onto Adam Lange and he has done well. But he needs to develop consistency. I like the way that he can play either end of the field and how he just crashes into packs. He's only young, but along with Colbert he'll be the one to watch next season.

i wasnt around in the seventies but when the ten year rule was introduced wasnt it nth melbourne people heading the board at the then vfl and then wasnt the rule quickly abbolished once nth had won two premierships?????

now i know all your nth supporters are going to be biased and have a crack at me so can some not kangaroos fans answer this

Walshy

When the ten year rule came in, North had a hitlist of players, and out of them, they snaffled Barry Davis, John Rantall, Doug Wade, and I think one other one. Wade wasn't going to sign until (I think it was) Ron Joseph went and saw him a dumped a brown paper bag full of money on his kitchen table. The other one they tried hard to get was Carl Dittriech. The rule was made to allow players who had long service with the one club to have free agency, but it was quickly closed when the North admin (led by Allen Aylett) exploited it to the extreme.

I don't think there were any North people on the VFL board, but I think they lobbied hard for the rule once they worked out how they could use it.

If they only came for the money, why did Davis and Rantall return to their original clubs, after premiership success had been found.

All I was saying is it not amasing that a little suburban football team has the smarts, money whatever you want to call it, to recruit 6 opposition Captains.

I have a feeling it may be 7 if you include the days of the VFA and a certain Carlton player. I will check this one out a bit more.

The stories I have been told is North originally voted against the ten year rule, but once the club realised that the rule was going to be passed they worked harder then any other club, to use the rule to their advantage.

If I have it wrong, I am sure one of you will let me know.

I was wrong about the Carlton guy, that was Frank (silver) Caine, leading goal kicker and three other Carlton players transfered to North in 1909, that must have been some coup.

However I have found another opposition Captain "Wels Eicke", 1924 St Kilda Captain transfered to North in 1925.

That makes it seven Captains, not a bad effort.
