speaking of enduring cold freezing conditions i dont know the exact year it was but does anyone remember the essendon game at windy hill when it was PISSING down rain for the whole match. i think that's the wettest and coldest ive ever been and we were on the hill in the outter...only respite was we won the game..by a point i think? (or was it under a goal)

for fitzroy crazy memories that's certainly one for me to look back on and smile

There was a match against North in 1989 that left me saturated ... and another at Western Oval v West Coast. We got hidings in both of them ... 8 goals to 1 in the North match, and, I think, 13 goals to 3 in the West Coast one.

The West Coast game is the wettest I can remember. It probably felt worse, because there were only about 4,000 people there. If the crowd had been bigger, we could have huddled together & kept the rain off us a bit.

That North game in '89 was miserableness personified (?). When we played the Roos at the Park in '83 it poured continually until 3/4 time, but at least it wasn't cold and we flogged 'em! It rained so much that day they even invited us plebs into the members' stand!

1983 - Windy Hill game was the week AFTER the world's greatest game ( V North ) and - correct - it was absolutely freezing. Rain horizontal, howling wind - as usual there were a couple of Bomber boguns in thongs and sleeveless jumpers moaning about the lack of beer.

This was the game that I first saw the kick off huddle - everyone bunched at CHB and when Gary Pert shaped to kick out , big breakout to all parts. Pert then hoofed it long ( as only he could ) to a running Paul Roos - running with the flight of the ball - who then lobbed it forward. 'That's a good idea', I thought.

Bernie kicked the winner after a specie and we then had to find the car.

Yes I vividly remeber this game (the end of it). It was frigggin freezing and it was one of the only times I utilised my Fitzroy Mitts. From my recollection it was a titanic struggle and as Old Lion says Bernie was responsible for getting us over the line. It happened right in front of me. The ball came down to Quinlan and Duckworth?. It was one of those one on one wrestling type of contests with Duckworth scragging Bernie and by the time the ball came Quinlan was laying on the ground. Somehow Bernie managed to position himself so as at least he had a crack at marking the ball and it managed to fall into between his arm and chest and he hung onto it. Probably may have got a free kick anyway but you never know. Slotted the goal and we won by I reckon 3-4 points. This is one of my most vivid memories. (At least I think it is - it was a bloody long time ago and I was a tacker). It was made even more special by the fact it pissed rain all day and all those Essendon mugs went home satched. It memories like this that those bastards can never take from you even though they have taken everything else from us.

prob the BEST match report ive ever read that.
i wasnt old enough to experience the old suburban football, but i missi it (if thats possible)

There was also that game at Princes Park v Collingwood with Krokah Dundas and Lynch slippin' and slidin' in the slosh and slush, and rammin' on 7 majors early ... or something like that.

You don't have to be mad to go to games like that but half mad helps I was in the outer, same game Windy Hill, hot pie in each pocket, only had one tinny all day to bloody cold to even piss.
Another one comes to mind Vs Melbourne at Artic Park mid '80's sat in the stand huddled up with all and sundry, and only about 9 thou there that day and everyone was in the back of the stand and couldn't see the bloody game, even cuddled up with a Melbourne sheila, but would do it again, in even worse conditions just to see the FFC run around, stupid as it may sound.

fitz v collingwood in 93 was a top game kev. lynchy on fire, nara dundas. it's a first quarter i can watch 100 times on video, as the maggots clawed their way back, until jason baldwin intercepted a fumble, and chipped the ball down the throat of one alistair poyndexter lynch. goal from 45 out post high and it was back to the yarra hotel you scumbags.

hahaha what a fantastic read from all you guys...of course its not suprising that we were all there..but great how we all buzz about it even after all these years

definately made more memorable by the absolutely pooring rain, cold wind and the fact that we came back and pinched the game in lion fashion

im thinking back tot hat era there was a stage there we used to consistently give teams starts and then come back and pinch it again

another game comes to mind..at the junction oval..i think hawthorn were on top..and we were on the bottom we had them goaless at half time...certainly a buzz!!

gets ya in the heart dont it..hahaha

I was at that Collingwood v Coburg-Fitzroy game too. I'm usually a "stand in the outer" fan, but I retreated to the grandstand for the 2nd half that night.

1 game i remember where it pissed down was the last round of 94 when St.Kilda beat us by about 6 goals.
There was merger talks and we didnt know for sure if we would make it to '95 and we had fair support there but it poured all day and St.Kilda won comfortably.
I can still remember that day Dad and I were sitting behind the goals at the Scoreboard end of the Western Oval behind the goals and it was the last quarter, the game was pretty much over and a drunk saints fan was yelling all sorts of shit at Wheildon, and Wheildon turned around and had a good look at him, we were both waiting for the Doc to jump the fence, but the siren went before too much longer.
Also that game against the eagles in late 94 when shit all people turned up West Coast flogged us, just before half time we were fighting back and Johnson had a snap for goal from about 12 metres out directly in front and didnt make the distance!!

That's right, FP, I met you there.

Like the usual idiots, us blokes ensured we stood in the pelting rain.

My missus was up in corporate box, keeping dry.

In '93, and certainly a game to remember. I've got the highlights of most of that game on video. I think you can also buy it from the AFV thing . . .

It teemed down all night.

Was just about to mention that one myself. Even the hot food had trouble living up to its name that night.

It bought back the memories though.

The earlier game against St.Kilda that year was also a freezing encounter at Waverly.

J.McCarthy kicked a goal with the back of his boot! We were in it for most of the 1st half, until Damen Shaw shut down Roos in the 2nd half.

Another game that I recall as being one of a freezing nature, was a pre-season game against Essendon, at Waverly in '95.

I've got that on video as well. Although, apart from a few nice goals from Molloy and Hawkins (who, along with Atkins made his first appearance for the Roys), we were hammered all night (Cummings kicked about 8, for the Dons).

Well this is unrelated to Fitzroy, but the coldest game that I ever went to was to see Kinglake and Panton Hill in 1998 around August at Kinglake.

I remember that it was the areas coldest day in over twenty years, we had to play the reserves at 12:45 because of fog, and the seniors had to be played on tuesday night at North Heidelburg because the senior umpire got Hypothermia during the third quarter.

You could only imagine the wind, sleet and occasional snow and we had to play footy in this weather (lucky I had a hip flask of whisky when I watched the seniors).

That was the coldest day of footy I have ever been to and since that Kinglake folded this year, that will sadly never be topped.
