In a previous post, you stated the majority of the general public think the bands I like are shite. I basically responded with " I don't care what some tyrekicker out in Sunshine thinks and that music critics opinions hold more weight with me". That's all.

Yet you've been shown up to be full of shit saying that music critics don't rate Oasis and U2's music. A number of their albums have been highly rated by music critics.

Fair enough if you don't like them but to say they are aren't rated my music critics is wrong. For the record I like bands like The National, Arcade Fire and Wilco too but that doesn't prevent me from liking more popular mainstream bands like U2 and Oasis. It seems some people just like to slag off popular mainstream bands like them because they think it makes their taste in music superior and adds to their indie cred.

....or they genuinely think those bands are shit.... Why is that option always left off the list. :p

100%. I like some mainstream bands like MGMT, You Am I, BRMC & Regina Spektor.

I just think Oasis, U2, Coldplay and The Foo Fighters are big, stinking piles of shit.

I went to britney spear's concert* a few years ago so there is no way i'm a complete music snob.

I also saw destinys child as well. There's pop songs i genuinely love but coldplay etc are in that limbo where they make shit mainstream mass marketed crud but want to be taken seriously as well.

Do one well and i'll respect you ;)

*it was one of the worst decisions i've ever made. I saw the girls i went with in a new light and our friendship has never been the same.

Music critics :o

Everyone's a music critic m8,so don't kid yourself that these self appointed flogs have some special insight or knowledge into what is good taste and what you should, or shouldn't listen to..

After all, you are your own best judge when it comes to what you like and dislike and you dont need some twatt to validate it.

You're entitled to your opinions but if you genuinely think albums like Achtung Baby and Definitely Maybe are shit then you must have awfully high standards, even higher standards than most music critics who rated them highly.

I like Shakermaker, Live Forever, Columbia, Cigarettes And Alcohol, Slide Away, Listen Up and Half The World Away from that Oasis era. Talk Tonight, Some Might Say, Cast No Shadow, Hey Now, Round Are Way & Rockin' Chair are okay from the Morning Glory era as well. Even some of the B-sides like Idlers Dream & Lets All Make Believe were ok from post 2000, but most of it was just utter rubbish. Most of the stuff they have put out has been rubbish in my opinion. And by no means, at any point, were they ever the great band they professed to be.

They were just a "time and a place" band in the mid 90s in the UK. Very meh.

It's an abomination that bands like Coldplay, Oasis, U2 etc have sold 50x more records than bands like The National, The Walkmen, Arcade Fire, Wilco & Fleet Foxes.

If you were to combine all of Colplay's, Oasis's and U2's talent, it still wouldn't add up to the talent, heart and soul a guy like Matt Berninger has in his little finger. It's an abomination.

The ciritcs savage bands like Oasis, U2 and Coldplay for being generic, repetitious, derivative, soulless and money driven, and so they should. They are utterly horrible. Unadulterated filth.

That's just my opinion though. Many people obviously think differently, as the bands I have just slammed have sold in excess of 200 million records combined.

I love The National. Was excited about seeing them at Southbound earlier this year but it did not prepare me for how brilliant they were !!! Amazing. Wilco, Bright Eyes, The Flaming Lips. lots of bands that you are into, I am too. Own their records, seen them live.

Having said that. I was a teenager when U2 came out and that music remains brilliant. Boy, October, Achtung Baby and in particular The Joshua Tree are great albums.

I have never bought a Coldplay album or seen them live but enjoy their music. My wife bought A shot of blood to the Heart and I really enjoy it.

Matt Berninger is a Coldplay fan too.

Here is an excerpt from an interview he did in The Montreal Gazette.

Berninger: I don’t know. Yeah, we’re really happy with where we are and happy with what we’ve done to get there. But we spent a lot of years touring and playing for nobody, and they were hard years. I would never want to do that again, where you drive eight hours to play for five people, and the amount of time we spent on floors and stuff. I feel like we’ve earned our stripes, but I don’t know if I would tell somebody to go on tour without any kind of fan base. It could have destroyed us at some point, but I don’t know. Maybe it thickened our skins. So right now, when you look at it all in perspective, maybe we were really lucky that it took us this long, because people are going to know that we’ve been doing this a while. It’s not just like a flash in the pan. But the truth is, it just boils down to if people like the record or they don’t like the record. You know, there’s Coldplay: Their first record blew up, and they stayed huge. They stayed really popular, and they make great records. Or Radiohead; with their single Creep, they were a flash. And that first record, not much of the rest of that record is that great. Creep is unbelievable, but they had kind of a one-hit thing on that first record. And they blew up, but they followed it up with brilliant record after brilliant record. So I don’t know if the way we’ve done it is the best (laughs), but looking at it from where we are now, we do feel very lucky and very blessed. We’re like, okay, this is good. What we were doing all along was, for us, the right thing to do, and we’re glad we didn’t try something else. I think if you try to find an audience, you won’t be able to. You just have to do what you want and let them find you.

Gazette: Also, you mentioned Coldplay. You guys are making the albums you want to make, I assume; whereas with Coldplay, with their last album, I got the feeling this was a band that really wanted to stay at the top and watered itself down to stay up there. I don’t know if you’d agree with that or not…

Berninger: I don’t know. I know Coldplay is one of those bands that’s vilified, but I think they’re vilified for being so popular. And sometimes the things their songs are about, or the way they deliver them ... yeah, it is sometimes a little syrupy and manipulative, but the truth is, it’s really effective. I’ve been one of these people who have kind of been like, in my brain, "Ah, Coldplay, what the hell?" But I put on their records, and I find myself enjoying the hell out of all their records. So they work for me. I can’t really say a negative thing about Coldplay. They’re doing what they like, and it’s reaching a lot of people. And good for them. The truth is, any band that can make songs and then become successful, whatever type of thing you’re doing, I have a lot of respect for that: that you tried something and you made it. But yeah, whatever. I don’t want to dis on Coldplay.

What a horrid thread. It assumes everyone on earth judges music on the same standard and rules you do. What I find on boards like these is no one has appreciation for showmanship or the said ability to actually perform on stage without all the techy stuff to make them look good

Arcade Fire are so bad live its scary (seen them). Not too sure about the others but if you think Arcade Fire is a good band it wouldnt surprise me if they all suffer from the same fate. Coldplay on the other hand put on one of the best live shows in the world. Even Coldplays biggest haters can go to a Coldplay concert and enjoy themselves. You cant go to a Arcade Fire being a hater and end up enjoying yourself quite simply because without computers these guys have no talent

Wait wut?

Arcade Fire are awesome live

Just heard Arcade Fire....not my thing at all. They sound like an Amish house band from Lancaster, PA. But they are more talented than Coldplay that's for sure.

Their whole existence and drab output just irritates me. My time is too precious to waste being irritated.

Say what. The singer sounded like he had been kicked in the throat, and that was only for the 20 seconds you could actually hear him. No stage presence whatsoever. Looked downright stoned and even the hardcore fans at the gig didnt seem that impressed.

Ive seen a Silverchair concert when Daniel Johns was recovering from laryngitis and TBH Arcade Fire was worse.

One of my favourite bands and still listen to "A Rush of Blood to the Head" and still think it is a great album. "Viva La Vida and All His Friends is another album I still listen to and enjoy. I went to one of their concerts on their last tour here and it was the best concerts I have been to compared to all the other big bands that have toured here the last couple of years.

Don't really care what other people think to be honest. So apparently because I like them it makes me dumb/stupid, ah well I can live with that accusation even though you do not know me at all. This music board seems to have a number of people in it that think if they do not like a certain band or artist, then they are crap and have little talent.

Look at the end of the day, music is subjective.
Just because I love Neutral Milk Hotel doesn't mean Joe Musicallydeaf is going to love it. That's their call.

I can recognise that Coldplay doesn't really go too far with the music, and it's in the little sweet spot for the public of music that doesn't sound like it came out of the anus of a dolphin; but is never going to reach lyrical or instrumental heights in any stretch. It's easy music. That doesn't necessarily mean it's shit. Fix You is a good song, Clocks makes good use of the Piano, and the Scientist is actually fairly out there for such a generic band.
Their new song, is utter filth.

Very similar with U2. Songs like Beautiful Day sound like they came out of a formula for music writing, but you can see how a song like Where the Streets have no name can impress people. Decent guitar, lyrics that aren't talking about taking a bish home and having a way with her when she's drunk, it's not shocking and it doesn't cause your ears to bleed. You take the song on face value; an average tune that will never revolutionise or change the music industry in any way.

People can relate to different things. I can see how teenage girls eat up Taylor Swift, and for her part she's probably ahead of the curve for her teeny-bopper kiddy "why'd you dump me, now i'm going to piss and whine about my problems" genre. She writes her own music, good on her. I personally watch her videos on mute and perve on her hotness, but that's another story. Criticising peoples tastes in music is pretty low and is really a pointless task. Unless its Nickelback.

See, that is just a rubbish quote. You're basically saying that you refuse to like any music that is enjoyed by the public. Try judging music on its merits rather than its popularity.

You should really pull your head out of your arse!

I'm saying, and maybe not well, that mass produced popular music like the band that is the subject of this thread is the type of music I do not enjoy.

Of course there is music I like that is popular to say that you do not like any music that is popular would take the logic of a 15 year old or someone very close minded.

Have you ever hurt yourself jumping off your high horse?

Sanctimonious twit.
