To be honest ive never been a big fan of Coldplay. They struck me in the same way bands like Embrace, Northern Uproar and Cast did when they first appeared trying to hitch their coat tails on the anthemic sound of Oasis.
It felt the same with Coldplay when they first emerged. The only difference was the Oasis backlash had started and Radiohead were the reigning kings of the British Rock scene. The masses were longing for a new Radiohead album and in stepped Coldplay, peddling the same line in anti globalization/make trade fair sentimentality and Bends style guitar licks. The strange thing was for some reason Coldplay were able to trick the punter on the street and music critics alike that they were in some way original and worthy of acclaim in their own right. Reviews for their second album 'A Rush of Blood To The Head' almost matched Radiohead's Ok Computer for sheer masturbatory hyperbole.
But what is about Coldplay that has captured the 'hearts' of the world? Is it the Matchbox 20 style commitment to safe, inoffensive, bland, music devoid of any edge whatsoever?

Just check out this selection of truly pathetic quotes from head 'Coldie' Chris Martin....

On their Glastonbury 2005 appearance
"We want to provide the definitive concert of all time. That's what we want to do. That's how we feel about it. If you want to know honestly our opinion on it, is that it's the most important gig in history. That's how we feel about every gig, but particularly this one because it's the most important gig in history combined with playing inside a massive Toblerone."

Now if it was Noel Gallagher saying that, coked out of his brain, id let that kind of comment sail through. But Chris Martin?

Or this...
"You want to be able to hold your head up high in a room with McCartney and Bono," the 27-year-old reveals. "That's one of the main things that drives me; are we trying to get to the next level? Yes. We're trying to get to the very highest level. We want to be better than Mozart

So you get to the next level by producing the same, boring, grey, emo by the numbers twaddle record time and time again do you? Do you get to the next level by marrying narcissitic stick insects like Gwyneth Paltrow? Do you get to the next level by scribbling on your hands with a texta like some psuedo intellectual version of Kylie Mole from The Comedy Company?.

I pray Coldplay have reached there peak and an Oasis style backlash soon finds them. They are unworthy of any of the acclaim and success they have found.

May they never be remembered.

Bit rich from a man who once said he wouldn't shine McCartneys shoes. It is a typical goal for a band wanting to raise their standards but he can get a bit big headed like Robbie Williams in a way. At the moment they are one of the biggest bands out there and record some terrific music, but are not going to surpass Motzart or even join the ranks of Bono who himself still is to join McCartneys league but is pretty darn close

Having listened to X&Y I think they may have just released their "Be Here Now". I like Coldplay, when I first heard Shiver back in January 2000 they hooked me in & when I came back to Australia I got Parachutes the day it came out (a feat given no-one knew the fook they were). It was a great album & 'A Rush of Blood ...' was a great follow up, a step in a different direction but maintaining the standard. Since then however Martin seems to have lost it. He spouts so much garbage it's untrue and he seems to think he is the Second Coming. If he'd backed it up with X&Y I could live with it but apart from a few good songs it's so bland & disappointing from a band who are capable of so much more (particularly from Johnny Buckland). Martin has almost become a pretentious caricature of himself, hopefully he gets his head out of his arse soon enough because I reckon they've bollocksed it up with this record.

Never put radiohead in the same sentence as oasis or colplay. That is an insult. Never put tool in a thread about coldplay or oasis, equally insulting.

Major errors in your post

- Coldplay sound nothing like Radiohead, not even The Bends.
- Radiohead aren't that much better than Coldplay, for one reason - Thom Yorke. Musically Radiohead are more talented, but Thom Yorke is a weaker singer AND bigger knobhead than Chris Martin is.
- A Rush Of Blood To The Head is an excellent album, and should not be measured with OK Computer because they're not similar in any way apart from being British rock.

- But X&Y is weaker than AROBTTH, yes, and the hype is ridiculous.

Major errors in your post:

- Can't fault that first point.
- Yes Radiohead are much better than Coldplay, for many reasons, one of them being Thom Yorke. Musically, Radiohead are more talented, and Thom Yorke's singing is a huge factor in this. Neither Yorke or Martin are genuine knobheads, but if one of them is, it is the latter.
- AROBTTH is ok, and yes, it shouldn't be measured with OK Computer, simply because they're not similar, and AROBTTH is not even near the same ballpark as OK C's greatness. Coldplay- British? Yep. Coldplay- Rock? Just.

Thom Yorke is a f....... genius. He has more musical talent and creativity in his left toe than all of the irrelevant bands that are being spoken of. He along with his band have taken their art to a new and innovative level that cannot be matched or imitated. On the subject of his voice, I think you need to go away and have a real good long hard think about that one. have you seen them live?? He had a cold last time they were out, yet still managed to sing and he blew me the f... away! The first time they were out and they played fade out i almost melted. His voice is regarded as one of the best in the business, but i suppose you are entitled to your opinion.

There's nothing wrong with Coldplay, they are quite a good band with some very good tunes. Martin is trying to be the best at what he does. I do not think he is, but many think otherwise. Why bag the guy? He may be pretentious but name one frontman from a million-selling band who isnt. The bloke does an awful lot of charity work. Why would you want them to fail on their promise? Because Oasis have?

I'd really take your opinions seriously when you can't string together a valid simple sentence...

And yes, Thom Yorke does sound tone DEAF

It is indisputable that Thom Yorke's voice is fxcking awful.

Each to their own i suppose. Its indisputable that Thom Yorke's voice is 'fxxxx awful'? Id dispute that. Sure Thom's voice isnt as pure and clear as say a Jeff Buckley for example. But the emotion and 'peaks' he brings forth in tracks like Exit Music (For A Film), The Tourist, Lucky, Fake Plastic Trees, Street Spirit and on and on is simply in another realm to anything ive ever heard from Coldplay and Chris Martin. Coldplay arent fit to record covers of Radiohead B sides let alone have people suggest there the superior band. Absolutely ridiculous notion.

Thom Yorke isn't just like a regular singer in a band, he uses his voice brilliantly, like another instrument. He is far more talented than Martin. And i like Coldplay FWIW.

Also agree that Martin is increasingly coming across as a pretentious ********.

Spot on.

Not many singers would be able to sing over certain tracks from Kid Amnesiac. Indeed his voice is another instrument.

Just out of very little interest, what singers would you say are your favourites?

Maynard James Keenan
Frank Sinatra
Bono (he is not a great singer, but I do like his voice)
Gil Scott-Heron
Bernard Fanning
Josh Rouse

Among others.

UNIT: Actually, I'd easily say Chris Martin is a better singer than Thom Yorke. Both technically (without a doubt) and aesthetically. Both have pretty pathetic falsettos, though. Compare their weak, out-of-tune falsetto to someone with a truly strong falsetto like Josh Rouse and you'll see what I mean.

I'll give lengthy replies to posts that deserve it. One line posts which include deliberately mispelled swear words just to avoid the auto-sensors deserve one line responses. Well actually they deserve less than that.

Trying to take the high road after that is a bit of a laugh :)

"Swallowed In The Sea" - Coldplay

You cut me down a tree
And brought it back to me
And that's what made me see
Where I was going wrong

You put me on a shelf
And kept me for yourself
I can only blame myself
You can only blame me

And I could write a song
A hundred miles long
Well that's where I belong
And you belong with me

And I could write it down
And spread it all around
Get lost and then get found
or swallowed in the sea

You put me on a line
And hung me out to dry
And darling, that's when I
decided to go see

You cut me down to size
And opened up my eyes
Made me realize
What I could not see

And I could write a book
The one they'll say that shook
The world and then it took
It took it back from me

And I could write it down
And spread it all around
Get lost and then get found
And you'll come back to me
Not swallowed in the sea

And I could write a song
A hundred miles long
Well that's where I belong
And you belong with me

The streets you're walking on
A thousand houses long
Well, that's where I belong
And you belong with me

Oh, what good is it to live
With nothing left to give
Forget, but not forgive
Not loving all you see

All the streets you're walking on
A thousand houses long
Well, that's where I belong
And you belong with me
Not swallowed in the sea

You belong with me
Not swallowed in the sea
Yeah, you belong with me
Not swallowed in the sea

------------

Clearly Apple had a hand in the penning of X&Y. Boring, inoffensive, overproduced stadium rock to sell to America.

Radiohead without the interesting bits.
