To be honest ive never been a big fan of Coldplay. They struck me in the same way bands like Embrace, Northern Uproar and Cast did when they first appeared trying to hitch their coat tails on the anthemic sound of Oasis.
It felt the same with Coldplay when they first emerged. The only difference was the Oasis backlash had started and Radiohead were the reigning kings of the British Rock scene. The masses were longing for a new Radiohead album and in stepped Coldplay, peddling the same line in anti globalization/make trade fair sentimentality and Bends style guitar licks. The strange thing was for some reason Coldplay were able to trick the punter on the street and music critics alike that they were in some way original and worthy of acclaim in their own right. Reviews for their second album 'A Rush of Blood To The Head' almost matched Radiohead's Ok Computer for sheer masturbatory hyperbole.
But what is about Coldplay that has captured the 'hearts' of the world? Is it the Matchbox 20 style commitment to safe, inoffensive, bland, music devoid of any edge whatsoever?
Just check out this selection of truly pathetic quotes from head 'Coldie' Chris Martin....
On their Glastonbury 2005 appearance
"We want to provide the definitive concert of all time. That's what we want to do. That's how we feel about it. If you want to know honestly our opinion on it, is that it's the most important gig in history. That's how we feel about every gig, but particularly this one because it's the most important gig in history combined with playing inside a massive Toblerone."
Now if it was Noel Gallagher saying that, coked out of his brain, id let that kind of comment sail through. But Chris Martin?
Or this...
"You want to be able to hold your head up high in a room with McCartney and Bono," the 27-year-old reveals. "That's one of the main things that drives me; are we trying to get to the next level? Yes. We're trying to get to the very highest level. We want to be better than Mozart
So you get to the next level by producing the same, boring, grey, emo by the numbers twaddle record time and time again do you? Do you get to the next level by marrying narcissitic stick insects like Gwyneth Paltrow? Do you get to the next level by scribbling on your hands with a texta like some psuedo intellectual version of Kylie Mole from The Comedy Company?.
I pray Coldplay have reached there peak and an Oasis style backlash soon finds them. They are unworthy of any of the acclaim and success they have found.
May they never be remembered.
