I actually think Sonnet is a shocker. It's just a sad copy of Lucky Man with really bad lyrics.

On the pop side of things The Drugs Don't Work is their best song easily.

Have you even heard Sonnet? It sounds nothing like Lucky Man.

They always seem very similar to me whenever I listen too them, especially compared to the Verves other work. And out of the two Lucky Man is lyrically and musically a superior song.

Maybe I was being a bit harsh on Sonnet but of the top well known Verve songs it was the one I got sick of the quickest.

See most people have only heard Urban Hymns and think thats The Verve. In reality there early stuff was just pure space rock, not the melodic string laden Oasis type stuff that came later. Lucky Man is no better a song than Sonnet in pure artistic terms to my ears...in fact im sure i read that Richard Ashcroft saw Drugs Dont Work/Bittersweet Symphony/ and Sonnet as the albums highpoints.

Maybe I should've said other good work rather than just their other work. I have checked out their previous albums and a number of tracks are pretty good (Slide away, History, This is music, On your own, and a few others) but alot of it is crap too. Of course that's just my opinion.

All this doesn't invalidate the highlighted part of the quote however. Lucky Man and Sonnet stand out to me as two very similar songs when compaired to their entire work (unless you want to list a few more tracks from their early work that sound similar too). Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, alot of bands do the same thing and some bands do nothing but (Live), however out of the two similar tracks I feel that Lucky man is a superior song.

Hmmm, Bittersweet Symphony is a great song but I reckon half the songs on 'A Storm In Heaven' are just as good with 'Blue' & 'Slide Away' being the stand outs. I reckon 'This Is Music' is probably the best Verve song though.
