heres the good oil on these 3 fringe players - they are all fringe midfielders who need to be moved on to a team that doesnt already have 14 midfied options in their best 22.

I rate them in this order:

birss: scrapy ball magnet who likes to run and kick long, disposal questionable, but has shown incremental improvement over the last 3 seasons, and I dont see anything stopping him from continuing to do the same for the next 3 seasons. no super star, but no real flaws either.

b.murphy: is a skilled receiver who likes to kick a goal. if you have the grunt to supply him, he will look a million bucks. doesnt have the dash of cupido, but can play midfield as well as forward, and makes better decisions.

power: 187cm but still skinny after 4 years. has the disposal and gets plenty of ball but lacks confidence and intensity. just thinks too much - needs to play more instinctively and take them on more. has the biggest upside but is also the one least likely to achieve it.


birss is easilly in your best 22, and I rate him > cole, but i can see we might have to offer him to beat essendons offerof cupdio. either of the other two is in the ballpark, and would be a win/win for both sides in terms of what they need.

1/2 time in the VFL and I am not a fan of Birss. He does OK things with it when he gets it (usually loose and appears unaccountable) and he's not nearly big enough to go against serious AFL bodies. Odd kicking action, but effective. Maybe he's just having a crap one.

You'd keep Cole over Birss based on current ability to perform at AFL level. If he learns when to run and when to get rid of it, Cole will be infinitely better than Birss ever will. Of course, that's a big if!

Murphy looks lively and has some tricks, but is small.

Cole is worth more than either of them based on what I've seen. No doubt the oppo supporters will disagree.

watched only the last 10 minutes of the 2nd quarter, and all of the last quarter. how long did birss spend langushing in the forward line, like he was during the 2nd quarter?

I though birss was instrumental in weribee having a chance in the last quarter - seemed to be one of the few weribee players prepared to take on the opposition when he had the ball.

Dunno stefoid. I was kinda in and out of consciousness on the couch. Boring game until the final surge.

All's I know is Birss is too average in all areas, and very slight of frame. Got bossed around at VFL level at times and would be too weak for the AFL.

Can't see him bulking up enough to be a Lica-ish midfielder.

Richie, for all his faults, has definte AFL attributes. Big, strong, quick, can hit targets and even evade people (but also does the exact opposite off these two things too often), marks well overhead.

Birss kicked a couple of goals and looked alright if he wasn't under any pressure, but he is VFL level.

He's got plenty of ability, give hime another year to show it. we won't get quick fixes through trading. Letsdevelop our players, instead of have them stagnate at Willy.

He and Eade dont get on, he will be seaking a trade.

He played against the crows this year, had avbout 15 touchs and set up 4 or 5 goals then dropped

In his first game he had 26 or so touchs and killed it.

One of the best skilled players at the dogs with a huge up side but like pat bowden is not one of eades love childs.
