Well if our marine life is so damn keen to eat these bags maybe we can produce them with 30% more plankton..... seriously though. Give the innovators a chance. I'm sure it took a while before aeroplanes stopped falling out of the sky....

They have been, plastic is plastic, it is not biodegradable.

Bollocks to that. Reinforce the behaviour you want.

Charge $2 for the plastic bags and sell the canvas bags for $1. People will respond to that signal.

The idea that Coles has changed direction because some feckless idiots can’t organise some canvas bags for a trip to the supermarket is silly.

Er... paper bags are useless. They fall apart so easily. If you've ever been to Primark in the UK you know this one quite well.

Paper tears quite easily in comparison to all the other available options. That's why plastic bags came out..

Me too and if purchase more than the bags I bring in, just buy another one. Think I have about 12 now.:)

Wholefoods bags were far superior than the old thin plastic coles bags which could barely carry 4 litres of milk without ripping. Unsurprisingly we can make paper bags better now than 30-40 years ago when plastic bags started.

I live in an apartment block and have to go empty the bin into a bigger bin. I just used the bin as it is then wash it everytime I empty it. Doesn't take long and is better.

Fair enough. I admire your intentions, but you should keep in mind that if you live in an apartment block without kids/dogs etc then the bag ban probably has less impact on you than some others.

For lots of people, those free bags were used for a lot of other purposes (bins/nappies/dog poo/wet clothes after swimming lessons/dirty clothes at childcare/art work from school/lunches/bathroom bins etc). They all had to get replaced with something else.. often buying other plastic bags! Which makes the whole thing seem like a complete waste of time.

Its a bit different to the impact if you just do one weekly shop walking around the corner to your local grocery store/market.

Of course you won't effect the environment.. you probably don't even need a car!!

You might use 3 bags.. we use 15 and sometimes more. And we'd reuse every one of them. Normally more than once.

Do not have one here, always airdry even in winter... unfortunately winter being 0 half the time doesn't help.

I support the ban but agree with this; the phrase 'single use' bags is disingenuous because I reused them, either as a rubbish bin or to carry my lunch. I have plenty saved up but if when it gets to the point that I have to pay for a plastic bag to put my rubbish in, I'll be a bit pussed because it negates the supposed benefits.

Plastic bag use has plummeted in England since the introduction of a 5p charge last year, the government has said.

In the six months after the levy was brought in last October, 640 million plastic bags were used in seven major supermarkets in England, it says.

In 2014, the waste reduction charity Wrap estimated the same shops had used 7.64 billion bags over the full year.

If that trend were to continue over the year this would be a drop of 83%.
