Vic COLES DIY check out systems. Loop hole!

As noted, theft is not a loophole. And if you really think anyone's going to believe you 'accidentally' entered potatoes instead of scanning the steak then you're kidding yourself. People aren't stupid.

Agreed. I exploit this loophole all the time. I often duck into Myer, chuck on a jacket or shirt and stroll out. If I'm stopped I just act confused and explain that I thought this was my wardrobe.
Speaking of Myer (Highpoint Shopping Centre), it is rather easy to swipe items from their ground floor, well, from what I have observed. All you have to do is, drop items on the escalator, and watch it travel down to the car park. The rest should be self explanatory.

I hate the bloody things, i prefer to use registers and i'll even wait in a long queue, when it's a normal register for trolley loads (get dirty looks if i've only got a few items in my hand :p, least i'll be quick compared to people in front and behind me). If i get called out by staff to come and use it to help ease the waiting time, i feign deafness. If they do it all, i have no issues with it :p.

I hate the looks people, including staff give you when the machine tells you to place the items in a bag.... despite not needing one or with the stores own policy encouraging you to not use them!

Have often wondered how many people would rort the system, in terms of selecting the cheaper banana's - despite clearing putting through the expensive.

This is not a "Loop hole" or "Bending the rules" its just plain stealing. I couldnt really give a rats ass and would not do it myself but dont pretend its something its not

Woolworths & Coles are only putting in DIY Service so they can employ less people. So **** em - they deserve what they get.

That's not the way to solve the problem. They're huge supermarket chains and build in loss due to shoplifting. I am sure they have considered the increased risk of petty theft and balanced it against the wages of checkout operators that they save.

On the other hand, if people refuse to operate self-check out then queue times increase while throughput stays the same. Management miss their KPIs and something gets done about it.

Like a previous poster I don't use it (even if I only have a handful of items). If I get asked to use them I politely decline and say I'd prefer to wait for a real person.

The machine actually tells you to place the item in the 'bagging area', not in an actual bag.

I've never used them.

Would be good for when you have only a few items, although I'd assume you have to pay via credit/debit card or am I wrong?
It accepts most, if not all, forms of payments, be it coins, notes, credit cards etc...

When you're buying packs of items such as a bottles/cans, noodles or anything that include multiple items if you 'accidently' scan the barcode from a single item instead of the barcode on the whole pack/box you you only get charged for one unit.

Found this out by accident, but it happens a lot :p

Hardly a loophole. Not even a theft. The offence in Vic is Obtain Property by Deception. Dunno about WA or other states.

Anyways, i only ever use registers. These devices are going to cost people jobs. Not keen on that idea. Like going to a restaurant and cooking your own steak. Its just not on.

As in most jurisdictions, there is no actual crime of theft in Victoria. 'Theft' is a catch-all term that includes a range of property offences including obtaining by deception, buglary, robbery, etc.

Shoplifting is theft.

Shoplifting is theft.

Section 74 of the Vic Crimes Act disagrees with you there ('a person guilty of theft is guilty of an indictable offence...')

Anyways you'd likely cop a penalty for shop theft under 74A ($200).

If they wanted to I'm pretty sure they could get you for theft or obtaining property by deception if they wanted to instead

They're not too keen on $100 notes, though.

I guess it's understandable given how easy it would be to launder dodgy hundreds through this system.
Grab a magazine, slide a counterfeit hundred in, walk away with the magazine and $95 of clean notes.
Do that about a hundred times and you've turned $10k of dirty money into slightly less clean stuff with zero risk.

the weights would be different. cant really see how you can get away with this.

Exactly. They would at my Coles as the bar code is automaticly deactivated when scanned. Is the OP pullin our pud:confused:

Barcodes don't get 'deactivated' when they are scanned, they are just codes to identify the product. The things that set off the scanners are only on things like razors etc.

haha yeah gotta love loopholes in the system like this

reminds me of this guy who was always pissing me off so i wanted to kill him, but i knew that if i did i'd go to jail!
so i just antagonised him and pissed him off until he attempted to hit me so i just killed him as an act of self defence :thumbsu:
