Vic COLES DIY check out systems. Loop hole!

Do that about a hundred times and you've turned $10k of dirty money into slightly less clean stuff with zero risk.

Not many people would use hundreds though. When you put the hundred in, the self service thing would record it in the system with a timestamp. Then they match the time with the cameras......I wouldn't say zero risk. The reason they wouldn't like you using $100 notes is because - the woolworths ones, the coles ones are better - give out $5 notes as the largest denomination for your change.

Barcodes don't get 'deactivated' when they are scanned, they are just codes to identify the product. The things that set off the scanners are only on things like razors etc.

They put them on the expensive meat these days too, they are just a metallic looking sticker the size of a postage stamp. Not that they actually deter people from stealing though. Anything with the security tickets on are just taken out of the packet before they are stolen. Duh.

I regularly get twenties from the Woolworths machines.

They do only seem to deal in twenties and fives, though.

Yeah those things, the guy made it sound like every barcode in the store will set off the security alarms unless they are deactivated by scanning.

"If you tell me where you got those fake IDs I'll ignore those ice cream sandwiches in your armpits."

As has been said, it is not a loophole. It is theft.

I worked at a Safeway while I was at uni and self serve were going into to stores. Believe it or not the people that catch you are not stupid and they do not believe that you made an honest mistake. Do it to often and you will be stopped and the cops will be called.

I still chat to a few people that I worked with at safeway and they have had the cops in several times.

I agree with those who have said it isnt a loophole and is in fact stealing but having said that, by my moral compass, both coles and woolworths are morally bankrupt organisations.

They want you to do the work so they can make extra $$ and deny someone a job, yep good company and they wrap it up as if they are doing you a favour.

I wouldnt be surprised if they knew damn well that people when presented with choosing between the more expensive tomato or the cheaper one that most would go the cheaper option. They could then force the price down on the producer of the more expensive tomato so you save and the farmer is the one who loses out.

I hear Woolies are looking to save some cash by not allowing people to use the credit option on eftpos so they can save the 3 cent transaction fee they are copping in the neck. Visa and Mastercards being stopped will save them a massive 6 cents per transaction.

I mean seriously wtf happened to customer service, oh and i hear if you DO want to use a credit card it will cost you $2.50.

Welcome to the Duopoly of coles and woolworths people they own 70% of the retail market in Australia and they are forcing our prices thru the roof and screwing the producers at a faster rate.

Avoid them, go to the independant supermarkets and petrol stations.

Christoh I'm not sure how much money they'll really save with self serve checkouts. The money to purchase the system, maintain it and upgrade it, combined with the extra theft expected would probably match or exceed the likely wage savings I reckon (I imagine 2 self serve=1 safeway server given the speed). At my local coles they've replaced 2 checkouts with 6 self serve and one supervisor for it- only one person's wage saved and a lot of the time they didn't have both open anyway. For mine it's a great addition to supermarkets because you now rarely have to wait in line while buying 2 or 3 things. It's wham bam thank you mam and off you go.

And do you really think they make prices sky high? If anything they force prices down at this point. It's terrible on suppliers (eg milk suppliers get reamed- there was an australian story episode on it) but I reckon that's just the market. The worry is if they are able to get more market power (the ACCC will stop them) then they will then start increasing the prices by more than is justifiable.

I agree with you, I posted this thread in the Ladies Lounge that only the females will be able to access.

What I posted about, was how my daughter & I went shopping in Coles just before Xmas & there were a lot of staff putting up prices on EVERY item in the store. We managed to get our food pre rip off, except fruit, veg & meat, so we didn't bother buying them.

These stores can do whatever they want & it's a disgrace they are allowed to rip people off.

.
Only on VISA & Mastercard debit cards, they want you to press savings rather than credit (given on debit cards they come from the same bank account)

At Woolworths itself it's not such a big deal, but at the Woolworths Group stores where you're likely to make bigger purchases (Big W, Dick Smith etc) it's bad for customers as you lose the Visa Protection Insurance.

As a piss poor uni student I consider it my moral responsibility to exploit loop holes such as this.

Like this one time, I need a bus fare, but an old woman told me to get a job and didn't give me any cash. Anyway, I figured out a loophole and kicked her in that face! Then all I had to do was take her purse and sell her jewelery at cash converters.

Not only did I get my bus fare, but a tidy profit as well, all for minimal effort and personal risk.

Just waiting for the day when, as I walk into my local supermarket to grab some groceries, some bloke hands me a slab of pop-tops and says 'Just chuck them on the top, down aisle 12, mate'.

Anyhow, sure it has been said already, but this is about as much of a 'loophole' as being allowed to wear clothers into the supermarket is a 'loophole'. Sure, you can abuse it to get stuff 'cheap', but it is still stealing.

Not that I'm here to judge. Let he who cats the first stone and all that. I also wanted to see what would happen if I put good bananas through as crap bananas, and it worked. Saved like a dollar per kilo (ie a dollar) that day.

When I first saw these things at Chaddy I was like 'Ritzer's McDonaldization thesis might be nothing more than bastardised Weberism, but you just know he is gonna get more mileage as stuff like this spreads'.

To tell you the truth, though, the few times I used the self-serve checkouts (and I only did the banana thing once), I always walked out of there feeling good about myself for 'doing the right thing' even though it would be easy to cheat the system. Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode 'The Cafe'. I really am a good guy...

B-yoodiful.

pfft, the self checkouts are ridiculous.

you have to scan all the good yourself, bag the goods etc. and do all the labour that the checkout chicks do for you, whilst still paying the same price!!

may aswell get myself a discount since i'm going to do to all the work :thumbsu:
You should get a 5% discount for using them IMO

It's stealing. Not loopholes.

If you get apples and choose it as something else which is way less perkg, and a security guard comes over and wants to look at your receipt and sees you don't have what you selected in there, you will have a criminal record.

Not worth it.

Do the right thing. You will be caught eventually then you'll have a criminal record for the rest of your life for trying to save 10 bucks. Is it worth it?

Just a criminal record? surely 10 years jail-time minimum.

....

You are not going to get a criminal record for paying for lower quality apples while shopping at safeway.

If you had 30 foreigners loaded with completely full trolleys of apples doing it in bulk, loading the apples into crates and into the back of a truck, then driving 10 metres to the local fruit/veg shop then maybe.

I must be the only one who loves these. I love how much quicker it is, I love not having to deal with anyone and I have no problems with the payment methods. I haven't stolen though. I'm in at my local Coles 4 or 5 times a week buying basically basket-sized amounts of stuff so yeah they're perfect. And the only checkout chick who ever mans the self-serve area is gorgeous. So there's that too.

Sometimes I actually give customers their higher priced apples weighed at lower priced apples only because a lot of the times customers come back accusing us of over-charging them, only to find that they had somehow looked at the ticket for a different variety of apples next to the ones they purchased. I can't be bothered dealing with this so I just give them the lower price probably without them noticing, preventing them from coming back and whinging that they've been overcharged when they just can't read.
