RIP Col Sylvia. He was Dusty before Dusty came along.
I also didn't realise he'd played 157 games. Amazing considering all the injuries he had.

I’ve told this story on here before but I was talking to Cam Schwab at a thing once while I was in high school and he asked me who my fave player on our list was and I said ‘well at full flight Sylvia is as good as it gets’ and he responded by laughing and saying that Colin was always thereabouts on field but he was by far the best at the club at supporter engagement and primary school outreach and all of that stuff. For all my qualms with his performance and reports on his personal life I’ll always remember that anecdote because from outside no one would guess that Sylvia has such an affinity for interacting so positively with fans if you only knew of what the impression we’ve gleaned off the media has been

This news has been really affecting all day. Feeling so sorry for his girlfriend and her child. Col made lots of mistakes in his time, some of them unforgivable, but he didn't deserve this. Was king of the kids for 10 years at Melbourne. Rest in peace mate.

Devastated to hear this. Thirty-two is way too young to go, he was cut down way too soon. RIP Colin Sylvia.

Had the talent to win a Brownlow.

Gee this news has really got me down. Condolences to his family and your club. What a terrible way for the Colin Sylvia story to end. Very sad...

Tell me about it - every news break on the radio including it as a story - was difficult to actually concentrate at work today :(

So many know of the Col that the media portrayed and judge him on that, which is kind of ridiculous when you consider the talent you need to be an elite athlete compared to being an elite sports writer.

They are so quick to cut down the blokes who put on the show that pays their way from their ivory towers without realising that their bile is not only unsustainable but indeed selling their own farm for threepence.

Colin was a good guy - one night my daughter broke down between Kyneton and Melbourne - we lived in Bendigo at the time. My daughter was a friend of Col through school and he was the only person she knew in Melbourne.

A phone call later and Col drove out from MMelbourne, picked up my girl and took her back to his gran's for a feed before putting her on the train home.

Great fella.

Just horrible news. :(

I will admit I was an (armchair) critic of his, but it was always because of the eternal frustration due to the brilliance he brought to the table on the days he was 'on', and wishing we would see more.

RIP Col, and condolences to family and friends out there. Gone way too soon.

Colin was an immense talent and certainly did some stupid things post footy. Moving back to Mildura was the best thing for him and he had started to turn his life around. Was working for a mate of mine who said he was dependable and reliable despite some misgivings initially when he employed him based around things that you hear from third parties - Colin wanted to work and didn’t let my mate down.

Colin will certainly be missed by many in the Mildura community and especially at Meringur FNC where he was well liked by all.

Thoughts especially to his family who supported him through thick and thin - quality people.

32 - with his ability, should still have been playing AFL if not for injuries and the off-field issues. Fremantle was never going to be the right fit for him unfortunately, in much the same way as Beamer was never destined to shine in Brisbane.

Was a genuine favourite of mine for many, many years. Good interview with Brad Green from SEN yesterday.

Our Club is that cursed it's not funny - Robbo with a feature on it here in today's HS. Broadbridge, Wight, Stynes, Bailey, Flower.

RIP Col, condolences to all who knew and loved him, and may you always be remembered for your footballing exploits first and foremost.

Sad news.
Very enjoyable player to watch.
