Still hurting from 2001.... Picked up Stafford who was handy, Houlihan (dud) and others.... result... we all know what happened. Just wouldn't risk it with this 'gun'.

Agree I wouldn't trade a 1st rounder for a 28 year old. But as a FA they are worth it. Because when their contract runs out you can replace them with another. Being a big club will help us in this respect.

Not keen on the idea of Sylvia, has an attacking mindset which I think we have enough players who have an attacking mindset such as Deledio, Martin and Cotchin. If he provided genuine outside run like Lewis Jetta does then I wouldn't be against it but seeing as he doesn't I would prefer to target someone who can offer us outside run or someone who has a more defensive mindset like Luke Ball or Nathan Jones, as we do need to start thinking about finding a replacement for Tuck.

I think we are trying to trade for Adams for exactly that reason. We are trying to play an attacking HFF though and we just don't have the quality there, hence why Sylvia should at least be considered. The recruiters obviously have a better idea of where his head is at and whether he is worth it.

2. Sylvia will be 28 for the 2014 season, so only a handful of seasons left at the absolute best.

This type of thinking used to be a golden rule when it came to draft picks.

Now with free agency I believe it's a good thing to have a couple of good 28 year olds coming to your club for free. You get 3 good years from them and you paid nothing (if they're best 22 then their salary cap share pays for itself as long as its not ridiculous).

The main thing is not trading your picks for those types I reckon, or if you do, it's a token 5th rounder.

Robert Walls has written that Sylvia and a few team mates should be given the big A from Melbourne. And if as tigs2010 says he is of poor character then I say don't go near him.

That was my take on him. Melbourne supporter thinks he is fine these days. Used to go out on the piss when he was a bit down from all his injuries.

Definitley would be as you can never have to many quality players.

Knights and Sylvia means Grigg is no longer best 22.

Syliva is talented but quality?? Please. Guy is 28 and extremely inconsistent.

I can't see Knights and Sylvia pushing Grigg out of the side, both are high half forwards where as Grigg is a wingman. I'm not Griggs biggest fan but the reality is his 2012 season was better then anything Sylvia has produced over a sustained period of time, he would be competing with knights.

If you want to push Grigg out of the side i think Thomas or Cooney would be far better gets in a wingers role, or maybe even as Ellis and O'Hanlon mature. Yes Knights can also play the role but he is more suited to high half forward, he was struggling at the crows as a winger and they moved him to HF where he began to dominate.

We can also target a younger player with a better attitude then Sylvia for Griggs position, Clay Beams, Karnezis, Mitchell Grigg sounds like he has lifted his game in the SANFL or maybe even Watts who i think would thrive in that role.

Wasnt there a story this year or last about him and Frawley punching on one night out on the piss?? Think he is still out on it a bit, not that i really have a problem with players drinking more that some, like Dan Connors, have to learn what kind of blokes they are on the piss.

No it means O'Hanlon/McDonough never get a chance...

If you can't see the difference between Sylvia's talent levels and Grigg then I can understand why you don't want to go there. How are you meant to be consistent in one of the worst sides of the last 30 years? I disagree that he is only a high half forward, I think Melbourne waste his talent a lot of the time leaving to forward to rot. I still remember a game in 09 where he toweled the Hawks from the middle and had 40 touches and 4 goals. Goal kicking mid who can play inside and outside.

The difference between he and Grigg is he can kick rather than just lob balls forward, he tackles and he wins contested ball.

They will get there chance when they prove they are at the level. Nothing wrong with forcing young players to play good footy to get into the side.

Besides Sylvia would even replace King who is getting older and extremely injury prone these days.

The thing is, the game has changed. FA has completely changed the landscape of recruiting. Sylvia would cost us nothing, with huge potential to push us to the next level. It's literally delist Derickx and replace him with Sylvia. That simple now (excluding salary cap woes which may be an issue). I'm all for it if we can make it work.

We'd still probably need to replace Derickx with another mature ruckman, considering we'd really only have Maric & second ruck Vickery definitely and 32 year old Stephenson an unlikely maybe.

I can see Sylvia's talent is above Grigg, i can also see that Grigg is far more consistent then Sylvia.

For mine he is the fourth free agent we should target, althought Lecras won't ever leave West Coast and Perth, so he will come in 3rd. I just not particularly worried if we miss out on him.

If the price is right... why not go after someone like Sylvia. We've played Lonergan this year for 2 games, surely Colin is far more talented then Sam is. At worst we can use Colin as depth, but if his form and attitude change from switching clubs and finally getting some top end support around him, FA 100% for mine.

I understand what you are saying now...so you think we should target a free agent, however you would prefer Thomas, Cooney or Lecras first?

Tbh I would love Cooney but not with his injury history, Thomas would be good but more $$, Lecras like you said won't leave.

Have no problem going after a free agent. Just not convinced that Sylvia is the one....

I prefer this regardless. Surely it's where our longevity lies?

Yeah it's an interesting one fighting fury, I don't mind the kids trying to get more games but would rather they be earning them rather than blooding them for the sake of it. If we were to make the 8, then that would (to me) suggest we are on the right path and might have the list to achieve something with the right development and bringing in experienced players who are ready to go to try and get that extra 5-10% to mix it with the top teams would be fine with me.

If we miss the 8, then I think we are still a ways off and should try and help further the core young playing list (as they are the players our team will be built around in future). Guys like Sylvia would be good short-medium options but only if we have the solid base to try and achieve something in the same amount of time IMO.

I think by the time Ivan is set to retire, Vickery will be our no.1 ruckman with McBean taking Ty's role of Fwd-resting Ruck.
That's an ideal scenario - and I agree, however, in the meantime, it wouldnt hurt to go out and get a ruckman while we wait for this scenario to unfold
