PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 23
COLLINGWOOD vs FREMANTLE
Bad luck on the loss, how disappointed are you? As this game should have been a definite win?
I am extremely disappointed with our intensity, it was disgraceful. We just lacked effort, we didn’t really want the ball, and when we got it, we stuffed around with it. However, Fremantle were definitely the better team on the day and I won’t knock them because they played really well.

More bad news, the injuries, Fasolo, Reid and Wellingham…
Yes, all three are definitely in our best 22, and this will really hurt us going into finals.

Who is looking best for a call up?
Goldsack and Krakouer are back from injury I think, and the week after that we get Heath Shaw and Ben Johnson most likely, so things aren’t too bad. Lucky we have depth.

How will your team be thinking of the game against Geelong next week?
Well, we definitely want to win. How’s that?

Okay, thanks for your time, and good luck next week.
Okay mate.

GEELONG BEAT THE PIES IN FINAL QUARTER THRILLER
Collingwood has lost its second game in a row, this time at the hands of second placed Geelong by 5 points. The win for Geelong meant that they held onto the second spot ahead of the Western Bulldogs, who lost to Fremantle by 3 points.

In the first quarter, the Magpies kicked 5 goals straight to the Cats’ 4 goals 2 as they led by 4 points at quarter time. Geelong hit back by kicking the first 4 goals in the second, Chris Dawes and Jarryd Blair kicked one each to bring the margin back to 7 points at the main break.

The Cats yet again kicked away in the third, booting 5 goals to the Magpie’s 2, as they held onto a 21 point lead at the final change.

The Magpies came out swinging in the last term, after Travis Varcoe brought the lead out to 27, goals to Ball and Brown brought the lead back to 12. Teams then went goal for goal, until Swan snagged 2 and Macaffer slotted one from the boundary, the Cats’ lead was 7 points, and it was game on with 2 minutes remaining.

Leigh Brown was awarded a free kick for deliberate out of bounds, but his shot missed the post. The lead was 6 points. At the next kick out, the Cats coughed it up again, as Steele Sidebottom won it back on the 50, he booted it towards goal, but Matthew Scarlett saved the day and rushed it over the line. Geelong successfully got the ball out of their backline and managed to hold on to win by 5 points.

Dane Swan was outstanding in the loss; he racked up 38 possessions and kicked 3 goals. Scott Pendlebury (36), Leon Davis (23, 2 goals), and Alan Didak (19, 4 goals) were also in the best for the Pies.

For Geelong, Stevie J had 24 touches and booted 6 goals, and was extremely good. Jimmy Bartel (25), Cameron Ling (19) and Joel Selwood (17), were all up there for the Cats.

Next week, in the first week of finals, Collingwood take on Hawthorn in qualifying final 1 on Friday night, and Geelong will play the Bulldogs in the 2nd qualifying final on Saturday night.

PRESS CONFERENCE: ROUND 24
COLLINGWOOD vs GEELONG
Bad luck on the loss, how do you feel about the game?
To be honest, I’m not as disappointed as you would think; we weren’t disgraced today at least. But if we lose next week, I’ll be furious; it’s time for us to switch on.

Next week, Hawthorn, last time you played them you played out a draw, what can you do better?
Well quite simple, stop Buddy and Roughead. But I can back Maxy and Taz to get on top of them.

Will you make any changes for next week?
Um, we don’t know yet, but Travis Cloke, Heath Shaw and Ben Johnson are back, that’s all I’m saying.

Okay, thanks for your time, and good luck next week.
Okay mate.

TRAVIS CLOKE WINS COLEMAN MEDAL
Collingwood’s centre half forward Travis Cloke has been awarded with the Coleman Medal for 2011 after booting 66 goals, this the most goals he’s kicked in a season. Matthew Bate from Melbourne was runner up with 60 goals, Freo skipper Matthew Pavlich was 3rd with 57, closely followed by Barry Hall (56 goals).

“It’s a great honour to win this award after the season I’ve had, I hope I can snag a couple in the finals next week though”, Cloke said.

TIE OCCURS IN RISING STAR AWARD
For the first time in history, there has been a tie in the 2011 AFL Nab Rising Star award. Collingwood’s Alex Fasolo and Gold Coast’s David Swallow have both finished on 35 votes each. Essendon’s Dyson Heppell polled 31 votes, and was a clear 3rd. West Coast’s Andrew Gaff (14) and Richmond’s Reece Conca (6), rounded out the top 5.

Fasolo was picked up at number 45 in last years draft, and debuted against Essendon on Anzac. He averaged 14 disposals from his 15 games and also booted 33 goals from half forward. He is unlucky not to be playing finals for the Magpies this year, as he suffered a season ending groin injury in round 21 against Fremantle.

Swallow, who was taken at pick number 1 overall last year, excelled at Gold Coast, he played every game this season, and averaged 15 disposals, and he also kicked 16 goals.

QUALIFYING FINAL:
COLLINGWOOD vs HAWTHORN
MCG
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9
7:40 PM
This week, the first qualifying final, sees a matchup between Collingwood and Hawthorn.

Last time these two sides met was in round 15, where they drew, after the Magpies led by 6 points at three quarter time. Hawthorn’s dominant forward line walked all over the Collingwood backline, with Jarryd Roughead booting 6 goals, Cyril Rioli kicked 5, and Buddy Franklin kicked 2, the only other goal kickers for the Hawks were Jordan Lewis and Michael Osborne. Collingwood must stop these three if they are to win the game.

Travis Cloke is back after being given a well earned rest last week, Ben Johnson is back from injury, and Heath Shaw is back from his 8 game suspension. Experts have questioned Shaw’s return, saying he might not have the match fitness to play finals, that is not the case; with Shaw saying he is 100% fit to play.

Out for these three players are John McCarthy, Simon Buckley and Brent Macaffer, all of which are omitted.

Key match ups:
Dane Swan vs Shaun Burgoyne: both are playing a huge part in their team’s success, both attacking.
Scott Pendlebury vs Brad Sewell: Sewell will be most likely tagging Pendlebury, huge task, but he’s capable.
Darren Jolly vs David Hale: you would expect Jolly to win most of the hit outs
Alan Toovey vs Cyril Rioli: Toovey has a mammoth task of stopping Cyril; Toovey has to be right with him.
Chris Tarrant vs Jarryd Roughead: Tarrant’s in reasonable form, as is Roughead.
Nick Maxwell vs Lance Franklin: I don’t see Maxwell being quick enough to stop Buddy all game, he may need help from a Shaw or Goldsack.
Luke Ball vs Sam Mitchell: two hard nuts who will do their thing game in game out
Travis Cloke vs Josh Gibson: You would expect Cloke to be far too strong, but don’t under estimate Gibson.

COLLINGWOOD ADVANCE STRAIGHT INTO PRELIMINARY FINALS WITH WIN OVER HAWTHORN
Collingwood has won the first qualifying final over Hawthorn by 5 points after a goal from Luke Ball with 30 seconds left in the game. The win for Collingwood means they get next week off to refresh and recover from any niggling injuries players have picked up during the season.

1st quarter: The game begun with Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin slotting the first goal in the match in under a minute, and he was looking dangerous. The Magpies hit back, with goals from Cloke, Thomas and Didak to lead by 15 points. But Liam Shiels kicked one and Buddy booted his second before Dale Thomas kicked his second, and the Magpies led by 8 at quarter time.

2nd quarter: The Hawks worked hard, as Buddy kicked a third major, then goals to Pendlebury and Krakouer saw the Pies lead by 16. But then some Cyril Rioli magic, a goal from the boundary and a goal from a run down the wing had the Hawks trailing by just 5 points at the main break.

3rd quarter: The first goal in the second half came from Collingwood’s Tyson Goldsack, when he kicked a massive torpedo from 55 metres out. However, the Hawks hit back in a big way, when goals from Lewis, Young and Birchall had Hawthorn up by 11 points. Luckily, a goal from Chris Dawes on the three quarter time siren swung the momentum at the final break, and the Pies were just 5 points behind.

4th quarter: The last quarter started with Travis Cloke kicking 2 goals and Dane Swan kicking one from 50 to bring the lead to 13 points in favour of the Magpies. A couple of misses from the Hawks and a goal to Roughead brought the lead back to 5 points the Pies’ way. Chris Dawes and sub Ben Johnson both goaled and the Pies were up by 17 with only 5 minutes to go, and they looked home, until Jordan Lewis tore the game apart, kicking 3 goals in a couple of minutes to unbelievably put the Hawks up by a point, with a minute to go. At the next centre bounce, Darren Jolly thumped the ball forward and he found Steele Sidebottom lurking in the forward 50, he then switched the ball inboard to Luke Ball who was running into goal, Ball quickly put it onto his boot and slotted the goal. Collingwood were up by 5. The Pies managed to hold on from there to win themselves a week off and a spot in the Preliminary Finals.

Scott Pendlebury had 30 possessions for the Pies, Dane Swan (25) and the match winner, Luke Ball (22), had plenty of it too. In his return from suspension, Heath Shaw played well as he worked hard to get his 18 touches. Coleman Medallist Travis Cloke booted 3 for the winners.

Luke Hodge had 24 touches at half back, Brad Sewell (18) and Sam Mitchell (19) were the best for the Hawks. Jordan Lewis booted 4, and Buddy Franklin finished the game with 3, as he went cold in the second half.

Next week Collingwood have the week off and Hawthorn take on Sydney, who defeated St Kilda in an upset at Etihad Stadium.

PRESS CONFERENCE: QUALIFYING FINAL
COLLINGWOOD vs HAWTHORN
Congratulations on the win, straight into the Prelims, and a week off, how good is that?
It’s very good mate; it was a huge effort by our boys, a full four quarter effort.

Ever since he broke his foot, Tyson Goldsack has come back and played good footy, your thoughts?
Yes he has, he has been playing on the wing, and has got lots of footy, he got 18 touches last week and 20 today. I hope he has more of it left in him.

What are your thoughts on Hawthorn?
Yeah they’re a great side, they have a lot of guns, and two of the most exciting players in the comp, Rioli and Franklin.

With the week off next week, will you be looking to bring back Harry O’Brien for the Prelim?
No doubt we’ll be looking to, we need him in our backline, his run and carry factor is special. But we’ll be giving him a few tests before we pick him.

Who would you rather play in the Prelim Final, Bulldogs or Carlton?
Um, good question, I don’t think I can answer that, both sides are great teams and are so different, Carlton have the better midfield, but the Bulldogs have Barry Hall and Robert Murphy up forward.

Okay, thanks for your time, enjoy the week off.
Okay mate.

PRELIMINARY FINAL:
COLLINGWOOD vs WESTERN BULLDOGS
MCG
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24
7:10 PM
This week, in the second Preliminary Final, sees a matchup between Collingwood, and the Western Bulldogs. The Bulldogs finished 3rd on the ladder, and lost to Geelong in the Qualifying finals by 20 points, they defeated Carlton last weekend in the Semi Finals by 35 points.

Last time these two sides met was in round 6, where the Magpies won by just 2 points, behind Dane Swan’s 32 possessions. Last time Robert Murphy kicked 4 goals and had 24 touches, he will be a worry for Collingwood, as will Barry Hall.

Stakes are at their highest this week, the winner will take on either Geelong or Hawthorn in the Grand Final, and for the loser, they are set packing and wondering what could have been.

The Magpies have made just one change; Harry O’Brien is in after missing a long period of time due to injury. Tom Young is the unlucky one to be omitted, after showing some promising signs of late.

Key match ups:
Chris Dawes vs Brian Lake: Dawes looks to have too much strength for a tiring Lake.
Travis Cloke vs Tom Williams: Again, Cloke looks too big and too strong for Williams.
Heath Shaw vs Shaun Higgins: Both have a lot of pace, a great match up.
Dane Swan vs Matthew Boyd: Both All – Australian, both get a lot of ball, both game breakers.
Scott Pendlebury vs Liam Picken: One of the best midfielders in the AFL against one of the best taggers in the AFL.
Ben Johnson vs Daniel Giansiracusa: Two veterans to go head to head.
Chris Tarrant vs Barry Hall: All Australian full back against a bloke who kicked the third most goals in the comp, Hall is the key to the Bulldogs success.

COLLINGWOOD INTO GRAND FINAL AFTER THEY OVERCOME THE WESTERN BULLDOGS

Collingwood has won a place into the 2011 AFL Grand Final after defeating the Western Bulldogs by 22 points at the MCG on Saturday night. The Magpies will be taking on Geelong in the Grand Final, after the Cats defeated Hawthorn by 16 points.

1st quarter: Collingwood were switched on in the first quarter. After a scrap fest in the first couple of minutes the Magpies finally broke free and ran the Bulldogs off their legs, keeping them goalless, Chris Dawes kicked 2 in the quarter, Pendlebury and Cloke also slotted majors, as the Magpies led 4.2 (26) to 0.1 (1) at the first break, and looked the far more superior side.

2nd quarter: Collingwood continued their dominance in the second term. Harry O’Brien kicked the first of the quarter. Shortly after, the Bulldogs got their first goal on the board through Daniel Giansiracusa, which was closely followed by a Shaun Higgins goal. This gave the Bulldogs a sniff of hope, but the Magpies steadied as they got goals from Didak, Brown, Goldsack and Beams, and the Pies led by 43 points at half time.

3rd quarter: The second half began with Travis Cloke slotting a goal, but then a Bulldogs comeback, led by Barry Hall, who kicked 3 goals in the quarter, brought the lead back to just 10 points. 3 goals from Hall, and singles to Cooney, Giansiracusa and Reid gave the Dogs a glimmer of hope of another week of footy.

4th quarter: It wasn’t a Dog’s day in the end, as Collingwood woke up after a disappointing third quarter to win by 22 points. Travis Cloke kicked three for the term, Pendlebury kicked his second for the match, and Darren Jolly also got on the scoreboard.

Travis Cloke was best on ground, with 24 possessions and a bag of 5 goals. Heath Shaw had 23 disposals from half back, and Scott Pendlebury also had 23 disposals. Pies skipper Nick Maxwell had a season high 20 possessions as he did a brilliant job on Robert Murphy, who didn’t have a huge impact on the game.

For the Bulldogs, Matthew Boyd had 22, Adam Cooney (19), and Lindsay Gilbee (15) were the better players. Barry Hall booted 4 goals.

Next Saturday Collingwood will take on Geelong in the Grand Final, while the Western Bulldogs are left licking their wounds and pondering on what could have been.

PRESS CONFERENCE: PRELIMINARY FINAL
COLLINGWOOD vs WESTERN BULLDOGS

Congratulations on the win, Grand Final next week, but before I ask about that, what are your thoughts on Collingwood’s performance tonight?
Thanks, and yeah mate I thought we played well for three quarters, our third term was disgraceful. We should never have let them back in, but to the Doggies credit, they fought hard and caught us off guard and got back into the game.

No injury concerns tonight, that’s a good sign…
Yes it is, after the season we’ve had its safe to say we’ve had more than enough injuries this year.

The big one next week, the Grand Final, how will you be going at Geelong after losing to them in round 24?
Well, it’s hard to say now, but I’m sure we’ll closely watch Stevie J; he tore us up last time.

Anyone else a threat?
Of course, their whole side is a threat; you don’t make grand finals very often if you only have two or three good players. But Jimmy Bartel and Joel Selwood are the ones that spring to mind first.

Will you be making any changes to the side for next week?
I’m not quite sure, everyone is playing well and no one is really under the pump, I believe we have a good mix of talls and shorts, young and old, and I reckon we’ll be ready to give this Premiership another crack.

Okay, thanks for your time, good luck next week in the big one.
Thanks mate.
